I just tried it and it makes the two middle shelves unusable. The two middle shelves use the back panel to hold them secure and flat. Without that back panel, you only have the side screws holding the middle shelves, consequently, the shelves will tip and anything on them will slide off.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have this tower and gave one to my granddaughter. I’m saying that to say i have built 2 of them. The main structural strength is established by the metal side bars. I believe the back panel can be omitted without a noticeable loss of stability. The top panel establishes most of the lateral stiffness. The stand is well designed and strong.
