• Its designed to sit over a stove. The microwave pulls air from below the unit and exhausts it above the unit during normal operation. Putting it on a shelf would block necessary airflow.

• It does not have to be mounted to operate. I used it on my countertop for 2 days before I mounted it and worked just fine. It will work on a shelf.
