It depends on the “hardness” of the water in your home. Basically, the higher the calcium content, the more often you will need to clean it. The “clean” light is only based on a preset time from the factory. It may be way too soon or not soon enough

It is recommended that you clean the ice maker when the “Cleaning Needed” light is illuminated or 9 months has elapsed, or ice production decreases significantly. Cleaning the unit is not hard.
