Does whirlpool have an optional basket drawer or simple basket for this model? It seems there is a place at the bottom of the unit for a basket. null

There are no baskets, just a 4" border wall to prevent items from spilling out at the bottom . I do feel a basket would be better also an extra shelf. Unit works great !

There is a guard on the bottom of the freezer that keeps food safe from falling out. There isn't a drawer/basket that we were offered. As you can see it can hold quite a bit (see attached picture).

Yes there is room it comes with a plastic thing in front so stil doesn’t fall out but it does not have a basket. I hope this helps
