The moist room air is lighter than the cold air in the freezer. Open the top and cold dry air stays in the chest. Therefore, very little moisture gets into the chest to form frost. The electric heat to defrost the chest would coast almost as much as the current to run the refrigeration all year. Chest freezers rarely have auto defrost. Up rights almost always do. Just the physics of warm and cold air and moisture. The small amount of frost that forms can be removed in a few minutes with warm water and it all drains out through the garden hose you attach to the drain. Takes less than an hour once a year.
