It requires an electrical power source. Just had one installed, and in an older house as you indicated, as is mine, there is a potential issue with being able to open cabinet doors. So if you have any cabinets to the side, or the ones above are flush with the frame, then you may have a problem with opening the cabinet doors. The top if the unit is flat and requires at least a 1/4 inch clearance for cabinet doors to open. My stove was also right next to a corner cabinet, so the unit had to be installed a little to one side of the stove so that the corner cabinet door could be opened. You'll also need ducting to an exterior wall vent. I already had that but if you don't, you should investigate that first. Other than that, the unit is fairly quiet, has good suction and the extra light over the stove is bright. Good unit. Be sure Best Buy's installer, At Your Service (AYS) properly measures everything. I had originally purchased a 30" unit but the opening I had was like 29 3/4, and even if I had managed to somehow shave off the extra 1/4 inch, my corner cabinet would never have opened. You should be able to go on line at Whirlpool and get the manual and validate the size requirements. Attaching pictures of what I had, the empty hole (silver tape covered opening to outside and electrical while I waited for the 24" to replace the 30" that didn't fit), and the shots showing it had to be installed slightly to one side to accommodate the corner cabinet door. Hope that helps.
