marg, it may be from water that has not properly drained from your Dishwasher. If there is water remaining in the tub of your Dishwasher, press the cancel cycle to drain. Hopefully this information is beneficial to you. Thank you for your inquiry regarding our Whirlpool appliances!

Once you've removed whatever rotting organic material is causing the smell, run it empty with vinegar to dissipate the old residual smell. Hope that helps.
