Yes, you can select the cycle, etc with the door open, and once you press the "start" button you have 4 seconds (you'll see a timer that counts down) to close the door.

Yes, that's the normal way it works. You choose the cycle, the drying time and all other options while the door is open, then you press "start", and the unit gives you 4 seconds to close the door.
