You do not have to have a filter in and it will still work. I put tape on the lever inside the filter housing so it thinks a filter is in there. Since I have Reverse Osmosis water we do not use the filter in the refrigerator.

Hi Clutz, there is no way to bypass the filtration system on this unit. It will require a filter, otherwise, you will have to cancel the filter warning each time.
