“Is the Whirlpool a solid black glass, or are the burners and control strip different than the rest of the cooktop? In the photos, it appears to be black glass and a charcoal glass. Wondering how that affects cleaning.”

The burners and control strip are black and the rest of the cooktop is a dark charcoal color. I really had to look at the cooktop to answer your question, because I could not remember, so it must not be any sort of issue with me. Hope this helps.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The burners and knob areas are a smooth glass surface, the remaining surface is a textured glass that cleans just as easily. DO NOT use anything abrasive as the textured areas may smooth out or distort. Download and read the manual and they state the same precautions. With a little effort, the cooktop cleans to the point where it looks brand new.
