“Wired to old hood's wires and fan is not working at all. Light works but no fan. I unhooked and wired back to old fan to see if I did it right and old fan still works. There's only 2 wires. Am I doing something wrong or is this item defective?”

this item must be grounded therefore you need 3 wires unless you ground item it will not work
