  • QuestionDoes it have leveling legs, ice maker cutoff, removable grille, unit cut off switch

    Asked by NewPurchaser.

    • Answer I will answer my own questions. Whirlpool, in spite of some very inexpensive but very annoying omissions, it is a beautiful well functioning appliance, but why do you try to save $10 of cost by cutting corners? 1) No, there are no leveling legs. Repairman said they use to have them but now leave them off. Since the unit is on wheels, I had to put stick-on felt pads in front of unit to keep it from rolling out each time I open it. Fortunately, my floor was fairly level but some are not. Very bad shortcut. 2) The ice maker has a cut off but you have to remove the whole unit to access the cut off. A full tray is very heavy and can easily break plastic slides. It is also very difficult to remove and the repairman had to show me how to do it. Very poor design. 3) The bottom grille is removal but there are no instructions in the manual. Repairman had to show me. It is necessary to remove the grille for vacuuming the dust under the unit. 4) The user manual is generic and not specific to the unit. Very bad shortcut. 5) Upon delivery most of the plastic shelves were stuck in place. The repairman had to lubricate them. One shelf particularly shifted side to side when pulling out the bin under it. The repairman said they use to have a post on both sides of the shelf support but eliminated one so the shelf now shifts on that side. He said the only way to repair was to drill a hole for a new post. Nope!! However, I noticed the shelf is not quite wide enough to fit snuggly and is about the thickness of a car door edge. So I went to an auto shop, bought 2 lengths of clear vinyl door edge guard, and pressed onto edge of glass shelf. Wala, shelf fits tightly and no more shifting. Very bad shortcut with a very cheap fix. 6) No unit cut off switch. If you need to cut off the unit for cleaning, you either have to roll out unit and unplug from the wall (that can create an arc) or use the house circuit breaker. Very bad shortcut. 7) I wish there had been more shelf supports for more flexible shelf arranging. Here you are basically stuck with the shelves placed as they thought they should be. With my old Samsung you could place shelves in all sorts of combinations. Here I had to take out one shelf completely so I could put 2 liter bottles at the bottom to save lifting, and the plastic door shelves do not look strong enough to hold lots of drink bottles.

  • Questionwhat kind of compressor does whirlpool-24.6FT side by side model use? Is it a linear compressor?

    Asked by BoboMom.

    • Answer I do not believe this model fridge has a linear compressor. It's my understanding after talking with our appliance repairman, that LG and Samsung are the 2 companies using linear compressors. Our LG compressor just failed and this Whirlpool is one he recommended. He said when the LG and Samsung fridges work, they're nice. But they have a high failure rate which is caused by the way the linear compressor operates. It boils the oil and causes the seals to prematurely fail which in turn burns the compressor up. When we had him out to look at our LG, he told us that even if we had wanted him to replace the compressor, he wouldn't do it because neither company has fixed this longstanding issue and likely we'd be replacing the compressor again in 2-3 years.

  • Question. just purchased this side by side refrigerator. The doors and handles are not even/unlevel. The delivery/installer said they are just supposed to be that way. Is this true?

    Asked by RJ.

    • Answer This is not true! The doors need to be leveled. I had the same experience. One of my delivery men was only on the job 11 days and the other 5 days. They were never taught how to level refrigerator doors. They spent 1.5 hours at my home, calling everyone they could possibly call, to figure out how fix this. They finally got a call back from someone in the company who walked them through this. One individual they called told them to "Google It". So unprofessional!!! I felt so bad for these two new delivery men. They were persistent in not leaving me with the refrigerator that way and they did get it fixed. Kudos to them and shame on Best Buy for putting their employees in such a situation.

  • QuestionOnce done fillling a glass of water the spout drips a few drops down the front of the fridge. It bypasses the drip tray area. Is this normal and/or how can we fix?

    Asked by LynnT.

    • Answer Ours does the same thing. We have to leave the cup there for a few seconds, after filling it up, and letting go of the lever. That seems to be enough for us to avoid it dripping all over any more.

  • QuestionJust got this refrigerator and the user guide talks about an on/off switch for the ice maker. I can't find one on my refrigerator. Where is it and how do I shut it off so I can sleep?

    Asked by Notechie.

    • Answer See my question just under yours on Most Recent Questions filter. Yes, there is an ice maker on/off switch but to get to it you have to remove the entire ice tray. Push up on the front of the ice tray and carefully pull out. Be gentle as your are working with plastic slides and a full tray is quite heavy. I also have to use my other hand to support the back and main body of the tray. After pulling out there is a black rocker switch on the underside of the ice making unit. Push the side with the white circle for on. Push the black side for off. This is very bad design as most units I have had in the past had a very easy to reach lift bar to cut off the ice maker. To reinstall tray line up with glides, push in and up slightly on the front. Once all the way in (and that takes patience and care to avoid breaking plastics) let the front drop down a bit to lock in place. If the glides do not slide well lubricate with Vaseline jelly.
