“How far back is the install? My contractor aligned the front edge with the front edge of the slide in range. I would have preferred 2 or 3 inches set back. Too late now.”

Hi, thank you for your inquiry. The installation instructions do not make a recommendation for it's positioning over the cooktop, other than recommended height. So it would be a matter of preference.
