“In the rinse and spin cycle our 60 day old machine makes loud metal on metal -grinding noises. We finally got someone from Whirlpool on the line that said it was gear changing noises and suggested we close our laundry room door. Please advise.”

Mine does the same. That was a surprise to me! It is noisy but it gets the job done.
