In case others are wondering about this issue, I think I have a clearer answer :) The counters will not be next to the grills (grates). The grill/grates are about 1 inch above standard counter height. Also, the edges of the grates get warm but not hot-hot.

There is a stainless lip around the entire range, in between the grates and the edge of any counter top. With the burners on, the lip can still be touched without any burning in any sense of the word.
