“Does the controller come with batteries or are those sold separately?”

It comes with Duracell batteries. I recommend getting the insignia lithium rechargeable batteries and charge them via mirco usb

Yes it does, but it's better to purchase rechargeable batteries and the dock station for the controller to charge

FWIW, the rechargeable battery packs from my XBox One controllers work in the XBoxOne S controller.

The Xbox One S NBA2K19 bundle we purchased included 2 Duracell batteries to use in the controller.
