For online games you need the Xbox live subscription but for games you buy you don’t need the subscription if you play them offline

Xbox Gamepass is the only subscription that allows certain games to be played. The games on gamepass are all ones that would need to be purchased individually, gamepass allows you to play basically every game that it features. If you don’t want to pay a subscription for those games, it’s alright since any games that are free can be played online with everyone, gamepass just allows access to some purchasable games.
