• Thank you for asking! A subscription is not necessary to purchase and play most games, however an active Xbox Live Gold membership is required to play games online.

• No you are able to purchase games digitally a la carte. But Microsoft's game pass service will probably be a better value. For the price of about two brand new $70 games you can get a year's access to hundreds of games including all of Microsoft's first party games. If you do not want to pay that much you will probably need at minimum, Microsoft's gold service. At essentially just let you play games online.
