It depends on two things. Most importantly it depends on the quality of your speakers, and perhaps upon their sensitivity. I have great performance from mine. I have owned several Yamaha recievers, over the years, and Klipsch speakers. They have always performed with real excellence.

I have this receiver in a small family room with an open ceiling where the sitting position is no longer than 15ft from the front speakers or surround speakers. I have Polk audio in-wall speakers, Polk audio sub, with two Yamaha Musiccast 20 wireless surround speakers and they deliver adequate surround for the room at all volume levels. Also works well if I want to have a little concert/ dance party/ karaoke while entertaining as well.

I'm very happy with the surround sound with my system, and I think you'd find this receiver to be of very decent quality for this price range.
