No when you switch from the TV output to an audio output on the receiver, the TV signal stops to the TV.

Couple of options I can suggest to listen to music while watching sport: 1 - connect cable receiver HDMI directly to TV and choose whatever input for music in Yamaha. In that case how you are going to listen to Tv through audio system when you want without reconnecting cable?. You need to connect the audio out of TV (or speaker/headphone or optic out) to one of the inputs of the Yamaha receiver (Aux in or Av in). So if you want the audio of the Tv you select this Aux/Av input on Yamaha. If you select other input like Bluetooth you can listen to your iPhone music while watching sport. 2- using a low cost hdmi splitter. Cable receiver to “in“ of splitter and the two outs, one to Tv HDMI directly and the other to Yamaha receiver input. The drawback: you consume two HDMI of the tv and you need to press the button on the splitter to change between the two options: tv straight for cable(so you can listen to music) or through Yamaha audio receiver. Hope it helps, Gonzalo
