Low power will do more damage than too much. If the speaker sounds bad than turn down the volume. I'm running a much bigger amp for the front speakers(Martin Logans) The Yamaha is driving Klipsch center and Polk rears. It is a great high quality amp.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My front and center speakers fall in the correct range of power handling for my 140 watt/channel A2080, but my rears do not. They are only rated at 100 watts RMS. One factor to consider is what the output with multi channels driven is. Unfortunately, most receivers don't give this information. However, the NAD unit I tried out did. Power output on that unit dropped from 110 watts/channel to 70 when more channels were driven. Using that information and information about my speakers, I felt safe using my 100 watt rated speakers for my rears with multi channels driven, but I would not feel safe pumping 140 watts to them if only two channels were being driven, as when listening to stereo music. Better to upgrade the speakers in that case. I would suggest you visit a Best Buy Store with Magnolia and discuss what you have and want to do with one of their experts. I have found them very helpful. I use B&W 684's for my mains and 686s2 for my rears.
