“Are there only certain brand headsets this is compatible with. We can't seem to get it to sync to steelseries arctis 1. My son lost the dogle and we bought this as a replacement.. any suggestions”

It may only be for regular Bluetooth headphones and not "gaming" headphones that have mics. Also, though I did get my buds to connect, there is a noticeable sound lag with all the headphones I tested. I did some reading and apparently all adapters for Switch have lag. The next version of Switch which is rumored to be coming in 2021 will have proper Bluetooth support among other improvements so your best bet is to stick with wired headphones until then.
