Yes, you can. I moved about 3 or 4 feet away and it still worked.

The keyboard doesn't have to be attached to the iPad but the stand part is attached to the keyboard. The iPad lays flat if not attached to the keyboard.

I have a Blue Tooth Apple Keyboard that I acquired for an old original IPAD. The keyboard is not part of a built-in case. I can use it with the IPAD sitting on the edge of my bed and the Keyboard on my lap. I also have used the keyboard with an IPAD AIR.
