This re-telling of one mans survial during a tragic time in american history and who goes on to become and influential person in fighting for the freedom of enslaved African Americans during this time. His hopes were kept alive by wanting to see his wife and family again someday as a free man, unfortunately it was not until twelves yrs. later after living in harsh conditions and punishment that he was able to lay his eye upon them. He realizes what it truly means to be a free man and sets forth to make sure every enslaved person receives their freedom so they to can realize what it truly means to be free.

“12 Years A Slave” is, undoubtedly, one of the finest films of the past decade and an excellent opportunity to analyze the filmmaking techniques of Director Steve McQueen. With unforgettable cinematography, career-best performances, and an Adapted Screenplay that leaves a profound impact on the viewer, this film is truly one of the most important of our time and will not soon be forgotten.

One of the Great Movie I've Ever Seen

Twelve years a Slave is the greatest movie about slavery ever made. It is also one of the greatest stories about human suffering ever made. The story is yes about a free black man who is captured and forced in to slavery for 12 years, but the true main characters of the movie are the interaction between this man and the women throughout this time who had influenced him through this difficult time; from his wife who the story begins and ends with to the female slave who stills the movie. I love, love, love this movie. I can't recommend this movie enough.

It's hard to "rate" a movie like this. It's the type of movie that transcends ratings and reviews. It's importance goes hand in hand with how well it was made. If it had relied on convention it wouldn't be the same movie, thus losing the importance of the story. It may be difficult to watch but in today's age where, violence, for no reason can be found on TV before your local news, it isn't an excuse to not watch this movie. It is our history, as Americans, and it is important to remember this fact, 12 years a Slave is that reminder.

What can I say, this story was totally absorbing from start to finish following the plight of Solomon Northup and other slaves that were sold into bondage and treated shamelessly as everybody knows. The movie achieves every level of shock and awe; from desperation to exhilaration thanks to all the great performances of the cast & crew. * Just one suggestion though. If you haven't seen the movie Rosewood, I personally think it got robbed by the awards shows and was every bit as good as this movie and possibly better. CHECK IT OUT!

The picture and sound quality were excellent. The story was very interesting and the acting was superb. The movie is based upon the story of a black man who lives in the North of the U.S.A. in the year 1843. He is a freeman with a wife and two children. He is kidnapped and sold into slavery and taken to the South where he endures 12 years of harsh slavery. This movie kept my interest all the way through to the end. It should be watched by all Americans as it is part of our history.

Difficult to watch but ultimately required viewing. Particularly from Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor the performances are stunning. An aching and unflinching look at history that unfortunately still is relevant, McQueen's nuanced approach to the subject matter demands your attention and lingers long after the credits roll.

Along with 2012's "Lincoln," this film will go down in history as a definitive one on slavery in the United States. The troubles of Solomon Northup portrayed in this film will give you pause and leave you wondering how humans are capable of treating others with such cruelty. The performances of all actors, even those with smaller roles, are remarkable. Highly deserving of its Best Picture win.

This film captures the harsh and dehuminzing experiences that Black slaves endured in the US. It's purposely and justifiably filmed with intensity to show the monstrosities that took place and make those aware of such injustice. Aside from the story, the film does an amazing job capturing the styles of this era. The picture quality is great and he sound is superb! This is one film that should be added to your library.

Very dramatic film . Initially did not want to see this story due to it's subject matter. After a few friends saw it and recommended it to me, I decided to watch it. You immediately will empathize with the main character since he reflects the values America represents (family man, freedom, standing up against injustice while potentially risking your life). This is an outstanding film and I understand why it won Best Picture at the Oscars.

This movie is a time machine. It takes us back in history and show us some of the blood that was spilled in the United States of America. This gives us the remembering of never forget what black African Americans and whites went throught in this great country. If one of us is ignorant, then all of us are ignorant. We need to learn about our history, present and future., this is going to make us a better America. God Bless Amen

The movie was a great inside to the 1840s and the slave trade. All of the actors truly embodied their characters. Brad Pitt's acting seemed a bit fake compared to his peers. The accent he used just seemed out of place. I also believed the make-up department should have also done something with the actors' teeth. It was a little distracting seeing a slave in the 1840s with perfect white venners...kind of ruined the magic.

The wrenching story of descendants of Africans enslaved in America in the period just before the Civil War, is realistically told. Superb acting and drama by Lupita Nyongo, Michael Fassbender, and Chiwetal Ejifor. The actual story of a free Northern man forced into an unknown Southern slavery. After watching the film I read the original and eloquently written book, which is free and part of the public domain.

This gripping drama set during the time of slavery is the tale of Solomon Northup, a free man who is drugged and sold into slavery and thought dead/lost for twelve years. POWERFUL performances from Chitewel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, Lupita Nyong'o (who took home the academy award for best supporting actress) as Patsey along with Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson and Paul Dano

This was a great movie from the beginning to the end. The movie portrays the treatment of African Americans during slavery. Watching the story unfold will take you on an emotional rollercoster ride. The movie wasn't all negative, it had positive scenes. The movie showed the will of people to survive cruel circumstances and good people helping to expose the cruelty. I really enjoyed watching this movie.

This story is based on true events. IT was produced by Brad Pitt. The story is about a free slave living with his family in New York. He is seduced into joining 2 white men into going on the road and playing his violin during their performance. He does so and when they give him his pay for his part they then sell him off to slave traders and is taken to the south where he spends 12 years in slavery.

A moving film, it depicts a free man who was sold into slavery, and his 12-year journey to redemption and freedom. His determination to not let others beat down his will is one of the best performances in years. Well written and beautifully filmed, it boasts a cast which makes every performance shine brightly. This is the kind of film you buy and watch every so often. It is a modern classic.

This movie is not about race or black and white. It is about good and bad people. Empathy has no color. It is a story of determination and survival. This character is incredible and the movie is just beautifully made. Must see. It will start a dialogue. Some scenes are hard for children to understand. Lets get back to watching with our children so that we can have a discussion afterward.
