Can I give it 6 stars?
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not a whole lot to say here. The movie is excellent. The visuals are excellent. The Atmos is excellent. The simplicity of 2 men being on a mission to prevent fellow forces from walking into a trap makes for a great story. I also love the style of cinematography in that most shots were done in one take. There are very few cuts in this movie, and some shots were even entirely CGI to tie together two long takes. I’m willing to bet you probably didn’t notice entire CGI shots because they are that good. I didn’t notice. The contrast was superb and stylized so well to fit the mood, alongside vintage and dull but still saturated colors. Primarily shot in 4.5K and mastered in a real 4K digital intermediate, this disc is a rarity. A digitally shot movie that actually has the detail of 4K resolution. And it certainly shows. Not a lot of fast-action in this one, so Atmos effects are used sparingly, but the effects that are there are amazing. The plane flying overhead right before it crashed was one of the most boomy and thunderous effects I’ve ever felt with our system. Nothing bad to say about this release. If you’re considering buying it on a 4K disc, stop considering and just do it. It’s excellent. I normally refuse to pay more than $15-$18 for my 4K discs, but I had no problem dropping the full $25 for this one. Worth every penny.

Good 4K/HDR, and great steelbook package
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a review of the 4K UHD steelbook package of the film 1917. This is not a review of the movie itself, although the brief overview is that it is a creatively filmed experience, that lends itself to war historians and action film aficionados alike, with innovative use of a limited lens set to create an almost seamless feeling across the entire duration, despite some clever transitions between takes. The 4K presentation of the film is spectacular, with a visceral and pounding soundtrack if you have the audio equipment to do it justice. The HDR is not the most overdone or eye-catching thing that I have witnessed, but it did not feel like it was particularly lacking, like some films with poor grading and mastering choices (look at you, Star Wars films in 4K). The steelbook is proper Scanavo stock, with tasteful art for the outer and inner case. If you're a fan of the film, this version of the 4K release has been on sale often enough that it could easily be worth waiting to get this edition, although the regular packaged 4K has the same content. If you're a fan of steelbooks, this is definitely the one to get. If you're looking for the best 4K and HDR demo material, this likely won't be the best option to showcase your home theatre.

A Modern War Film
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I see Sam Mendes appear in the Director’s chair, I pay attention. I learned long ago that his films carry weight. This film is no different. It’s no accident that this film has been nominated for best picture. It’s very different from other fare, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This film has no real character development. You don’t know where anybody came from, what their hopes and dreams are, even something as simple as their food of choice. In most stories this lack of information and execution would make for a large, possibly crippling hole that would kill the film. Here, though, it’s not really noticed as it’s not required. This isn’t that kind of movie. This film is literally documenting the trip from point A to B. It’s not about the destination, it’s the journey that’s of interest. So what makes this film so much better than most? It’s the execution. Never a dull moment and, in slower moments, you have the cinematography of Roger Deakins to enjoy. If you want to enjoy the ride and get a look at gold standard level cinematography and editing, look no further. If you expect the glorification of war via fire fights, you’ll be disappointed.

A Filmmaking Marvel
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At the risk of spoiling a truly grisly moment in writer/director Sam Mendes' latest film, there is an instance not fifteen minutes into the film when our protagonist, Lance Corporal Schofield (George MacKay), injures his hand on a barbed wire fence. It is not this injury that is cause for the gruesome winces 1917 is sure to induce though, but rather that moment comes a minute or so later when Schofield's mission partner, Lance Corporal Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), knocks into him as the two hurriedly slide into a trench so as to not be spotted by enemy planes overhead. It is in this moment that occurs shortly after the film has set the stage for our expectations of what we might expect war to really feel like that it then shows us the reality of those expectations in turn aiding the audience in realizing that no amount of preparation or precedent could ever prepare one for the true nightmares that are the unspeakable things one human can subject another human to. It is in this quick, but effective moment that remained with me for the duration of the film's nearly two-hour runtime that emphasizes the power of the film in general over the would-be gimmick of the single-take experience in that not only does Mendes' and cinematographer Roger Deakins' technique provide an enticing challenge for seasoned filmmakers such as themselves, but it is in the challenge of balancing that technique with the ability to tap into something real, something raw and something that speaks to who these two men were in their souls that keeps the audience engaged. Successful or not, the technique of it all will largely go unnoticed by general moviegoers and in turn only make the immersion greater even if that general moviegoer isn't aware of what's creating said effect. Mendes and Deakins have proven time and time again they have the skill to pull off exactly what 1917 does, but for them to ultimately have the artistry to pair that craft with the character's drive to simply do the right thing in accomplishing their mission, a mission that will save hundreds of lives, while being surrounded by the ugliness of humanity on that mission is what makes the immersive quality of the single shot idea worth the trouble; the technique elevating the film to something unexpected not in that it is a dazzling technical achievement, but an emotionally involving experience with real stakes and a clear perspective.

1917 4K
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.PQ: This is areference 4K Blu-ray picture quality thanks to beautiful color balance and contrast ratio throughout, solid black levels, and the Dolby Vision HDR really doing this movie some justice. From a resolution perspective the native 4K source certainly finds great improvements over the Blu-ray as well. The increases to object sharpness and overall screen clarity are obvious. The picture finds greatly improved detailing to all of the elements, including mud, wood and sandbag supports in the trenches, uniform patches and seams, and helmet wear-and-tear. Facial clarity is beyond superb even in more challenging low light scenes, whether inside dimly lit bunkers or under cover of night. This is a dazzling UHD presentation from Universal. AQ: Audio is in Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 compatible if you don't have such setup) and I found it to be a excellent track as well. Dialogue was loud enough to hear without a problem, bass response is well executed, and when the action kicks in the surrounds and overheads are very solid.

One of the Greatest War Movies in 4K Steelbook
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The thematic elements, action sequences, writing, acting and directing of 1917 were all excellent, and the steelbook 4k offers a more sturdy keepsake for this fine film in high res. For some reason I had avoided seeing 1917 because some criticisms of the movie portrayed it as a cold, sterile vehicle for Sam Mendes' typical long-shot action sequences. The criticisms were unfounded. Tthe film indeedmade excellent use of Mendes' style. But 1917 also has a tremendous impact on a human level, showcasing the main character's emotional response to the mission assigned to him. At first, he is reluctant to accept it, but he takes on greater responsibility as the film wears on, only at the very end revealing how much he has to lose, and his underlying motivations. The audio and video quality in 4K high resolution is stunning. Ultimately, the film may not be as important or groundbreaking as top-tier war movies like Saving Private Ryan or Black Hawk Down, but it is equally captivating in its own way and earns a spot alongside them.

Howdedodat?
||Posted . Owned for 6 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Cinematic Mastercraft at work! I don't usually spoil things other than milk but since this movie came out in 1917 aka over 100 years ago I feel like it's been long enough. The movie essentially breaks down into a soldier looking to deliver a message to another soldier in order to avoid a bunch of soldiers from getting got. It was shot in 1 seamless take on an iPhone and man is it a cinematographers dream to behold. You'd think the main character could've borrowed the directors iPhone that the movie was shot on to text the other soldier rather than risking his life going on foot but alas, that would've made for a much blander war story. Visually it's a drab movie but the 4K really captures every glorious detail you'd hope to see and the audio track is a bombastic baby fantastic. Highly Recommended for anyone who appreciates great cinematography, war movies shot in 1 take on iPhones or mud.

Wow
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The product itself: good solid Steelbook. The only thing to really note is the artwork. The case is unusually free of any studio logos or emblems, and the result is an unusually restrained and beautiful case. The stark black with the soft colored title minimally displayed looks particularly good on the shelf. 5/5 The film: Sam Mendes and Roger Dawkins did a phenomenal job with this. The entire movie is one continuous take, but is not truly real-time (the film begins one day, continues through the night, then ends the following day). Still, the passage of time never feels wrong. The film has some pretty unflinching depictions of the devastation of The Great War, particularly when crossing No Man’s Land. For a war film in this age, there is remarkably little violence, and the constant tension is really built from the constant threat of violence around every corner, whether real or imagined. And when violence does occur, it feels almost like a relief. Truly a masterpiece. 5/5

1917
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This 4K UHD title is phenomenal! The picture and sound justify the purchase alone. Its home theater demo material. The Atmos effects are some of the best used in any recent UHD release since the pandemic started. The night time scenes with the burning village will give you chills...trust me. The picture matches the sound. Its pretty darn gorgeous. The HDR is good, but the film isnt exactly supposed to be bright and colorful; however the details are very noticeable and clean. The movie is a great war movie on par with Saving Private Ryan and calls for multiple viewings. Following the soldier on his mission really gets the audience feeling his urgency toward the climax of the film. At the end you are anxious to see how it all plays out. Definitely a great addition to your UHD collection. Great disc and great war movie. MUST BUY!

Subtle night movements, survivalist days...
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A beautiful and epic film. What literally takes only moments to build in the beginning comes a non-stop foot for survival. Carrying a message to stop fellow British troops, 2 soldiers are faced with stopping them from marching into an ambush by the German opposition. As with most WW1 stories, the messenger is a constant reminder of one’s mortality in war, and the fears that come from it. In this case, every bit of fear and anxiety is felt behind each step. Moving through vast terrains that are constantly changing and ever challenging, nothing in this film is given without work. But somehow the struggle is just as beautiful to watch as it is thrilling to feel. Even the slowest, quietest scenes are packed with adrenaline or anxiety, never knowing what’s over the next mound, or around the next corner. Phenomenal war film that truly deserves every award and bit of praise it has received - true artistry.
