From a resolution perspective the native 4K source certainly finds great improvements over the Blu-ray as well. The increases to object sharpness and overall screen clarity are obvious. The picture finds greatly improved detailing to all of the elements that are vital within the visual parameters, including mud, wood and sandbag supports in the trenches, uniform patches and seams, and helmet wear-and-tear. Facial clarity is beyond superb even in more challenging low light scenes, whether inside dimly lit bunkers or under cover of night. Even fine point detail -- individual blades of grass, for instance, in those places where some grass still exists -- bear much visual fruit, as do countless examples of worn and decayed objects, like war-torn buildings or a collapsed bridge seen midway through the film. This is a dazzling UHD presentation from Universal.

First off; great cinematography!!! 1917 is about two World War I soldiers who are given a mission to travel across enemy territory. You just know it is going to be tense from that! The movie has a dreamlike feel because the characters are taken from one unpredictable situation to another. Visually it has an excellent style. It was shot to give the illusion of one complete tracking shot beginning to end. Every moment the camera is following the characters from one peril to another. The scenery in the movie is amazing. The characters travel through a constantly changing landscape; trenches to abandoned farms, etc. Even the worse environments look great. The night scene is one of the best images of the movie. Get your drinks and snacks handy, because you're not going to want to leave in the middle.

    Great Steel Book Edition!

The design of the steel book is wonderful. It may seem simplistic, but think about it, the movie is called 1917. All you need is the four numbers on the cover. However, the black design with silhouettes makes it even more beautiful and artistic. The movie itself is a nice story of two soldiers sent to relay a message to hold off on an attack that is a trap. Their journey takes them through many challenges of survival during World War One. There is action, but there is also a lot of dialogue. I was never bored. Even when the characters were just talking about their views on being a soldier, it will still hold your attention. This movie is also visually stunning with all the scenery and landscapes. What’s impressive, is the shots that are done in one long take. I really enjoyed this movie, and I highly recommend it.

Like the cover says, "one of the best war films of all time", and It definitely is. It is a harrowing experience, and does something new with the genre. The atmosphere and sense of urgency this film creates is what draws you in. So realistic in it's presentation. The camerawork, what can I say, how in the world did they do that. I mean this film is a case study for the the particular techniques they used in filming it. Just a wonder to watch. This movie is a breath of fresh air in this day of god awful films. The 4K picture is nicely rendered. The gruesome details of carnage displayed in trench warfare really standout. Kind of sickening at times but authentic. Got to appreciate that. The audio, when the bombs go off you might want to turn down the volume. This 4K blu ray is a must have.

    Gripping War Drama

"1917" was one of last year's most honored films and topped numerous "Best of" lists and carried off a number of awards from the Golden Globes and Oscars. Directed with great visual flair and attention to detail by Sam Mendes (whose accomplishments include "American Beauty" and "Skyfall"), the story takes us literally into the middle of the carnage that was World War I. Two young British soldiers are given an order to deliver a crucial message to frontline forces preparing to launch an attack. The film, shot so as to appear as one continuous take, follows them on their treacherous path through trenches and mine fields and bombed-out homesteads in their attempt to carry out their mission. It's a harrowing journey that vividly underscores the madness and mayhem of war. First rate!

1917 puts your right in the thick of the war to end all wars. We don't see many WW1 films but it seems like the period is seeing a renewed interest. They Shall not grow old being a documentary film from Peter Jackson is a great complement to this. Whereas the aforementioned documentary painstakingly restores genuine footage in color to deliver an incredible new perspective on WW1? 1917 represents a different approach. Your not passively just watching this. The impression of one continuous shot puts you right in the thick of it as if your right there on this journey with the two lead characters every step of the way. It's an incredible experience of which we have not seen before in film.

A different way of presenting The Great War

This World War I film differs from other films of that War stretching back to the silent era of the 1920s. It spends less time philosophizing and more time creating an experience for the viewer of what it must have been like in the spring of 1917 to have been a combatant based amid the infamous trench warfare. The extraordinary cinematography (Oscar winning) turns you into a companion of the leading characters. Visual and sound experiences combine to reveal the horror of The Great War without either chauvinism or preached anti-war messages. The hope of combatants in all wars to do what is required of them and simply survive and return home to a normal & peaceful life is showcased in this film. An "experience" film of first quality.

Great soundtrack and a very solid story. It takes some turns you don’t expect. The picture has great detail and with the surround sound you feel like you are in it. Not a lot of stories are about World War One and the colors definitely represent that era. There are a lot of good night scenes which I feel is the best way to test you screen, UHD player and the movie itself. They did great at having scenes at night where you could distinguish different grays, browns and blacks without it all mixing into one black and blurry screen. You can make out all of the elements when he’s hiding from the German soldiers and finds the Mother. Over all an exciting ride to take you on and you won’t be disappointed!

    Beautiful Steelbook, Even Better Film

Speaking only about the steelbook design, it's wonderful and beautifully designed. A great addition to my collection, and the movie isn't bad either. Not really a fan of war movies since they almost always boil down to the same kind of story; but this film is actually great in its own right. Characters aren't wholly developed, but you learn enough about them to empathize and care, and the edited to look like one long 2hr shot is impressive in its own right, and should not be looked upon merely as a gimmick. This is one of the most immersive war dramas I've seen and I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good movie in general. For me, this movie is way more thrilling and moving than Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk," and should not be missed.

    1917 4K Blu-ray Review

1917 ranks amongst the finest War films ever made. It's as much of a narrative achievement as it is a technical achievement, home to unprecedented production detail excellence as well as first-rate action and grounded, sincere emotional currents. Nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture, and the winner of three, including Best Cinematography, 1917 is one of 2020's, and its genres, finest. Universal's UHD is terrific, too, featuring 2160p/Dolby Vision video and Dolby Atmos audio, both of reference quality. A fine assortment extra content is also included. 1917 earns my highest recommendation.

Sam Mendes ( director of movies like American Beauty , SPECTRE ) delivers one of the best World War I movies every made in 1917. By using cast of relatively unknown leads( George MacKay , Dean-Charles Chapman ) and sprinkling veteran actors like Mark Strong and Colin Firth, Mendes is able to tell a compelling story about a mission to save lives but also show the atrocities of WWI in the background. The main gimmick of the film that was talked by movie critics was the 'illusion' that all the scenes were done in one take which allow the audience to feel the tensions and intensity of what the characters in the film might be experiencing.

Fantastic war drama film! This was an excellent movie that looks incredible in 4K. I love war movies and majored in history while in college so really enjoyed this take on WWI. What was so gripping and interesting about the story itself is that it told from the first person perspective of the soldiers themselves and the important mission they had which takes the whole movie to follow. There is terrific acting, beautiful cinematography, action and a tense soundtrack that ties it all together. Definitely not a film to be missed and I would put it right up there with other Great War films such as saving private Ryan.

I watched this with a few friends, and every single one of us was glued to the movie the whole time. It's nicely paced with breaks between action and tension. I will say, this was one of those movies that I had no idea how it was going to end. Kids movies end up with something about home, mysteries end on a showdown with the surprise killer, most action movies end with defeating the big-bad at the end. With this movie being essentially one-shot, you know the war won't end, but you also don't know what the resolution will be. I really liked that. I enjoyed it, it satisfied my curiosities, and it was a well told story. Check it out.

Superb, nearly flawless film! Fluctuated between it and The Joker as the best of 2019. The cinematography, score, and direction made this epic war, intimate and personal. Much is made of the early, outstanding long take but the whole Wayfaring Stranger song segment towards the end is equally outstanding for its subtle emotional tug. Thankful that I saw it a couple of times in theater for the immersion, but even at home it can be mesmerizing in 4K. Lots of extras and Movies Anywhere digital copy make this a no-brainer purchase, especially on sale for $7.99. My best buy at Best Buy in a long time!

My experience with this movie was horrible! This movie Sucks you in with impressive scenes!! And my experience was horrible because one of my svs subwoofers stopped working a day before I got to watch this master piece. And I didn’t want to just watch it using Only one sub because I got used to how movies sound using 2. Got a replacement in 2 days and wow this Dolby atmos track is killer on my 7.2.4 svs home theater set up. Looked even better with my jvc native 4K projector with a 160 inch screen! Who needs a theater I don’t like watching a movie with a bunch of strangers never liked going to a movie theater. I have my own home theater.

If you have yet to see this film, i cannot recommend it enough! It is one of the best films to come out in the past year. As of this review, this is my only steelbook and i felt that this film deserved that honor. As for the presentation of the film itself, the cinematography is the best i've seen in years, the direction likewise. the transfer is out of this world and the better of a 4K TV that you have, the better this film will look. Same for the audio. You would be doing yourself a disservice by not having a Dolby Atmos capable system and watching this film. Beautiful soundtrack as well!

Really enjoyed this British war film. Through Best Buy, providing the best value for money during the purchase. Watching this movie in 4k UHD provides the best visual experience for the movie. This movie set in the year 1917, about two young British lance corporals, William Schofield, a veteran of the Somme, and Tom Blake, ordered by General Erinmore to carry a message to Colonel Mackenzie of the Second Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, calling off a scheduled attack the next morning that would jeopardize the lives of 1,600 men, including Blake's brother Lieutenant Joseph.

I'm really torn on what rating to give this movie. On the one hand, I don't think that I would necessarily say it was "on the edge of your seat" entertaining. Nor would I say that it was truly memorable and have to watch again. But, I would say it was VERY WELL DONE...almost like a work of art. Which, maybe, some would say that is what movies are supposed to be. The cinematography, the colors, the landscapes, the sets...all just amazing. And, I am NOT an artsy person. When the movie was over, my first thought was "Wow. That was a well made movie."
