While I fully understand that the 3DR Solo is not the end all and be all of the drone world it has proven to be an excellent workhorse of a filming platform. With regular software updates to improve performance and filming assists.

Bought my first 3DR quadcopter online and had hoped for a revision B but when it came only 2 days later I was sorry to find it to be a Rev.B...No problem, Bestbuy took it back and found what I needed in their stockroom....The Solo drone fly's great and thanks Bestbuy for the low price on this quad and bundle.

So...after two weeks of owning this drone, it decided to just fly away. I had to chase it down the street where it almost hit a car. I recovered the drone and sent a report to 3dr. The turn around time said expect 48 to 72 hours response time. I waited 2 weeks, getting nothing but apologies for being delayed in a reply. Finally, I decided to return it to Best Buy with the intentions of upgrading to the DJI Phantom 4. I was willing to pay $700 more for the upgrade. I was 4 days outside of the return policy, unfortunately, so they wouldn't do anything about it, and told me to contact 3dr, which I had already done. I've since thrown it in the trash, and will never purchase from Best Buy in the future.

The Solo is a great done. It flies easy, takes off and lands itself.
Some good points, it has a lot of special features which are great for capturing good video: Cable cam, Selfi, Orbit, Follow Me. Almost no other drone has these features and they are easy to use!
It's easy to update the software when an update is available. You don't need to be a computer wiz to figure out how to do this.
If you leave it in the basic (default settings) almost anyone can fly this! Here's an important TIP for beginning pilots: But be sure to keep the front of the done pointed AWAY from you until you have a lot of practice flying.
It has a PAUSE button that basically freezes the drone in mid air, use this if you get in trouble!
On the down side, with the current firmware it can have issues with WiFi interference, so don't try to fly this if there are a lot of houses or businesses nearby that have strong WiFi signals where you are flying. How do you know? It's easy to get a WiFi scanning app for your mobile phone, or check to see if you see a lot of other WiFi access points where you are trying to fly. If there are, and they have a strong signal, be careful!
If the drone gets in trouble, it will try to land where it took off from! This is a great feature! TIP: Don't take off too close to other objects as the 'home' point isn't absolute and it can be off as much as 6 feet or so in any direction. Also be aware that drones can't see (yet), so they can't avoid things like trees and other objects when they are trying to auto land. You need to keep some of these things in mind if this is your first done.
This done is designed for good photography and video. It's not designed to be a long distance flyer, or a speed FPV flyer. So be sure you know what it was designed for when you purchase it.
It does have some advanced modes that you can turn on if you like, manual flying, drift mode and acrobatic mode. Don't try these until your a very experienced pilot!
At the time of this review, we're still waiting for the gimbal to be released. The gimbal is an optional extra cost item that should give you clear vibration free video. Without it there can be some vibrations in your video, so be aware of this before you make your purchase. If you want the best video you WILL need the gimbal. So don't try to compare this to other drones until the gimbal is available.
Flight time is great! I'm getting close to 20 minute flight times. This is plenty of time per flight.
There will be more software updates to make this drone better. There already has been one and they promised a lot more features to come.

Awesome for Photographers

Most of the issues with this posted above are USER ISSUES! Read the manual people! This is not a toy, not a quad to start with and you need experience before launching out of your tree lined backyards! Is is easy enough for beginners? Sure! But watch videos, ask others, join a forum of other users and try to find someone that has one and fly together. Then do it in an open, unobstructed area.
There are no product wise "connectivity" issues. And the one bug that has been identified is already patched and set to release. No other company has the customer support that 3DR will give. They are replacing some SOLOS that will likely end up NOT being hardware or software defects. Try that with another manufacturer we all know well. It won't happen.
The gimbal release will jump this quad into an entirely new level for photographers. Now we can fly AND get the awesome shot without a spotter. And the SOLO will fly the shots for you much better than you can fly them yourself. Ever try an orbit while flying and controlling the camera? Seasoned pilots have a hard time with it. But the SOLO does it for you, same way, every time, flawless.
So don't listen to the people here that have agendas. Read the instructions and FLY!

So you want a quad copter and you've got no idea which one, why and whether or not the FAA is even going to ALLOW you to fly it in the National Air Space. Yeah, you may have heard all about the FAA and DOT deciding to require ALL hobbyists as well as commercial users to register their quads, and perhaps even become a PILOT I order to fly something like the SOLO. This is a review, but it's hard to NOT talk about what you should expect once you make your decision on which quad to buy.
First the SOLO is an amazing piece of engineering. The shell alone is tough and when you first crash it - and you will, you'll see no cracks, splits or breaks - because it's super tough. it will scratch if you fly it into a house - try not to do that.
it does what you think a RTF ready to fly quad should do - it flys - it's smart - with its onboard GPS and wifi it knows where it is and you at all times. it's smart for you to know where it is at all times too... Line of sight is required and is just as important as seeing down the road while you drive.
it has power, it has safety features, it lands and takes off at the touch of a button. if it looses the signal to you - it comes home. and to begin with you will want to start flying in an open field or parking lot where you can be seen and see.
buy as many batteries as you can afford. each flight lasts 18-20 minutes real time.
buy the gimbal it makes your shots buttery smooth. and if you already have a GoPro great you're set. if you don't - buy the hero 4 blk you have the least amount of issues and get amazing 4K footage.
if you've grown up playing video games on consoles you're ready to rock and roll - the controller feels like you're on an Xbox or PlayStation. it's that easy.
read the rules the SOLO comes with. watch EVERY YouTube and Vimeo video you can find of footage from the SOLO as well as people reviewing the SOLO. if you haven't already done that, stop and do it now.
SOLO has a lot of competition as of this review, and that's as it should be - it drives development and creates an excellent environment for us the consumer to learn and know as much as anyone could know about quad copters.
the pricing is spot on, the SOLO app works with both the iOS and droid OS AND if you're using a laptop or pc as well - there is freeware to download so you can plan out flights - upload to your controller and fly that way!
The 3Dr Solo is not the only game in town but for the money and return on your investment at this level you get every penny's worth.

The next evolution of aerial photography

The 3DR Solo one of the most accurate and enjoyable quadcopters that i have ever flown.
Unboxing was simple, the first charge of battery and controller was pretty fast. The first update installed without a hiccup.
After the update, I was prompted for a calibration and then I took it to an open field for my first flight. Auto take off worked great, auto land worked great and RTH worked great. The first battery I took it easy to get used to the feel. On the second battery I flew more aggressively and took it farther and higher. Solo is very ninble even in the slow settings, but a bump to medium or fast and this thing is insane.
Next I tried Smart Shots. Selfie, Orbit and Cable Cam. These are by far my favorite features of Solo. This is going to be a cam changer in aerial photography because it allows you to perform camera blocking techniques that could previously only be done by a motion control rig or a 2-3 man team.
The controller feels well-built and is some heft to it so it doesn’t feel like you’re holding a toy. The sticks/gimbal feel good and the buttons have adequate responsiveness. The live feed from the GoPro was accurate with hardly an lag and there wasn’t any artifacts or pixilation.
The Solo itself feels solid. The arms and the legs are very solid and should take a licking. When flying in med-fast, the motors have a lot of performance.
Over 10+ flights I am betting between 18-22 mins before landing at 20%-25%. Charging takes about 1.5 hours. A second charging cable is definitely a must buy.
Range wise I’ve only gone out to 1300 ft, but I still had an rssi of -30. I feel that range is adequate enough for what Solo was made for, aerial photography.
All in all, 3DR has a winner with Solo. The smart shots alone puts it in class of its own. If you want the ability to take amazing footage, upgrade your aircraft with new accessories and cameras or add additional functionality via scripts or apps, then the Solo is for you.

Great drone for aspiring Aerial Photographer

First off, I am a hobbyist who has built numerous multirotors for myself and others so I purchased this already having familiarity with arducopter code and mission planner. That being said, knowledge of arducopter is not a requirement to enjoy flying this drone, however one needs to thoroughly read and understand the manual before flying. I have had zero issues with my quad and it has always flown as expected. I have read of instances where people try to fly in tight spaces and around structures where they shouldn't be flying and experiencing issues.
With any quad i have ever owned i feel it is important to build trust in the platform. By this i mean that you always want to start out flying in large open areas and from one flight to the next build on maneuvers and functions that you are asking the device to perform. As it performs as desired you can understand the drone's tendencies and build trust in how and where you feel comfortable flying.
If you do the things above, you will absolutely love this device. If you take it out of the box, charge it up and go fly in your front yard without reading the manual, you could be in for a surprise. They definitely made this quad easy to fly but in the same breath there are many advanced features and if one does not make themselves familiar with them, it can be easy to get confused.
Purchase, Read, Take your time, and you'll absolutely love it. This is the most advanced quadcopter on the market right now.

So easy to fly! Take it out of the box, charge the batteries and read the manual and your good to go. This thing flies itself while in gps mode. It hovers perfectly in place even in wind. The ariel photos and videos that this thing captures are stunning! The gopro is a perfect camera to have attached to this bird. If your on the fence about purchasing, just go for it. I did and I couldn't be happier. The smart shots and features this thing offers is why I chose it over its competitors. Read 3DRs fly away guarantee and you will see why this thing is great for beginners trying to get into the hobby.

This product has been long awaited, finally here, and everything an aerial photographer could want! From the dedicated controller to the stylish design of the quad everything fits together to form a unique flying experience! The software allows the user to tailor the responsiveness of the platform to their own experience levels. The built in features such as "Orbit", " Follow me" and cable "Cable cam" make the first time user a potential pro photographer. A live video feed to your own tablet or phone makes it so you can see the shot you want and get it! The controller screen displays all of the telemetry data you need for safe flights such as , altitude, remaining battery life, and number of acquired satellite's. With the gimbal your GoPro 3 or 4 will be rock solid. This product was designed from the ground up to be trend setting, and it does all of that!.

I've never flown a quadcopter of any kind before, so I was a little nervous about crashing and fly-aways, but the Solo is so easy, fun and stable to fly that anyone can do it. I considered getting a DJI Phantom 3, but think the Solo is a better overall investment since it's more future proof, being you can upgrade to the latest goPro Hero or buy add-ons for the accessory bay that add new functionality, The coolest feature, that the Phantom does not have, are the Smart Shots (Cable Cam, Selfie, Orbit and Follow-me), where you can basically let the quad do the flying while you handle the camera. From what I hear it's difficult to do both well, which is why the DJI Inspire comes with two controllers (one for the pilot and one for the cameraman).

Hi,
I have been doing RC for over 30 years now, and got into "Drones" 3 years ago, so the Solo is not my first ever "Drone". Anyhow, I really love everything about it. The way it flies, the way the app works and of course the way it looks. I also like the features it brings. Even though I can fly Selfies, Orbit and what not manually, I still like that they have programmable buttons to map those flight modes on. Sure, there are still a few bugs here and there, but nothing major. Not to me at least. Having said that. I had mine flip twice on me right after landing. The first time was on grass and nothing happened. The second time was on cement and it broke one prop, scratched all of them and damaged one motor bearing. I send my logs to 3DR and they are replacing everything that got damaged! No Problem. This is one of the many reason I think 3DR is one of the best Drone companies out there. Not only are their products great, but their service is as well, and that is what counts to me the most.
A few things I would like to point out:
- Try to fly in manual mode more often. The reason being is, that when you lose GPS signal, the Solo will switch to manual mode. Now, manual mode is not as "manual" as it sounds. The Solo flies pretty stable in manual mode. It also hold the Altitude. This mode is commonly called Alt Hold mode.
- Try landing using the FLY button, rather than lowering the throttle and landing "manually". Reason for that is, that there are less reported "Flips" when landing automatically compared to landing "manually", by lowering the throttle until touchdown. Don't get me wrong here... I have a ton of landings and I only had two flips and both were due to "weird" circumstances... so no reason to panic or think the Solo flips all the time.
I believe that is it for now. Fly safe. Be safe. Have fun.

Have several drones but this is simply awesome. For anyone interested in videography by drone, this will allow a single person take great video...of course, to get the full value of this, it will require the gimbal, which is currently delayed in being released.
For parents, do NOT allow your child to operate this without direct supervision. These props can do a significant damage if not handled safely and carefully.

3DR solo drone is heads and shoulder above the rest. With it's smart shots beginners can fly like the Pros, Cable cam, is perfect for those who need a camera man. Orbit mode, is by the cleanest of any drone on the market. Great GPS reception, 7 satellites under 2 minutes. If you want your shots to look professional the only real option is the 3DR Solo.

At one time I had the DJI Phantom3, and the 3DR Solo on back order, so I had about a month to read up all I could about each. I found that the Solo is what I wanted. The solo has room for enhancements and more add ons, the Phantom 3 does not.Customer service is important to me, the customer service is horrible from what I read and heard for the Phantom, plus you have to jump thru many hoops to get your phantom repaired. 3DR service is excellent. One month return guarantee, plus you’re speaking to a tech here is the US.True both have flyaway, but DJI has more of them check youtube. When I became aware that my local best buy had a Solo in stock I headed right over and cancelled my DHI order. Too many people are rushing to get their solo up and flying without doing the updates, or calibrations, and are flying them i nether back yards. Big mistakes.
