Customers express satisfaction with the router's impressive range, ease of use, and strong performance, particularly praising its ability to deliver a reliable signal and excellent streaming capabilities. Many appreciate the straightforward setup process and the router's extensive features. However, some customers note the relatively high price and point out occasional issues with the firmware. A few users mentioned experiencing lag, though this was not a widespread concern.

High performance router for movie streaming

I have multiple WIFI connected devices in my home and the ASUS router can handle them without one of them loosing connection. For example I can watch a movie on Netflix through my Chromecast, Skype, and surf the Internet smoothly. I am confident that the price is worth the performance gains and coverage this router provides. I love the ability to turn off the lights so that my office is not blinking with lights and the ability to attach an external drive via USB.

Poor Technical Support & Media Bridge Problems
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Registered product, submitted support request since media bridge does not work with another AC68P. I get an error on login, and video streaming is jerky. Eventually, they responded far later then their 48 hour stated response time, playing back the inadequate user documentation for media bridge. So, I am not a happy ASUS customer since media bridge does not work for me between two AC68s, video streaming is jerky, and they do not provide technical support as advertised on their website. So, this RT-AC68P simply does not meet my expectation per its ASUS advertised capabilities.

Good Hardware, Lousy Firmware

It took me 2 days to get the wireless to work. ASUS support is worthless. I found the solution on another site. I had to go to the download section of ASUS to get the latest firmware and install it manually. For some reason, you can't get the latest firmware updates from within the Admin panel. Also, you have to set the 2.4 Ghz wireless to 20 Mhz bandwith. The default setting is 20/40. You won't notice this problem with newer devices that use the 5 Ghz because the 5 Ghz is stable. Older laptops and anything that uses 2.4 Ghz will be a problem. ASUS obviously didn't test this properly before releasing it. This is a widespread problem based on reviews from other sites.

This does everything i want it to do except the Parental Controls are weak. You can only set time frames up for each user and that is it. You cannot do Web Filtering by user. If you block a web address, it is blocked for everyone. I tried to block some web sites from my kids, eg. Youtube, and not for adult users. Problem is if you block it, everyone is blocked from it. I am going to return this and look for one with better parental controls.

This is my second asus router I purchased which I decided not to do again. The first router I had to exchange 3 times. 3rd times a charm which worked OK. This router I had to exchange for a 2nd. In the end I ended up returning and getting a refund. First one I had was an issue with the software and I was told by asus to exchange but ended up the first one was working fine, it was just a configuration which I realized when I got the second one. My 2nd one had issues loading the web pages. I had to keep hitting refresh to get them to load. Over all it did what was needed but I was just not willing to risk any other issues even thou it was miner. It was returned and there will not be a 3rd time. I give it a fair rating because it does what it is supposed too. But plan on having to return it several times until you get a good working unit.

Unreliable Product

This product is junk. Look online at the issue occurring for thousands of people.
Basically hardwired it works 100mbps but if I'm even 3 feet from the router I get 1-5mbps on average.
Asus took 3 hours to answer the tech support line and one hour to get online help. The online of course gets disconnected the moment they want you to do something and you end up waiting another hour!
They had me update to the newest firmware and it got worse!
I have several AC supported devices in my house and even an ASUS WiFi Adapter for my Windows PC (my other computers are Macs).
Tech support says "How may I help you" then when you respond they wait 15 minutes to get an answer. Seems very scripted.
Over 50 settings attempted including 20Mhz and 40Mhz and all available channels. Firewall on and Firewall off.
Pretty much no suggestions have worked and others have complained about the same issue.
Compounding issues in true Best Buy fashion the RT-AC68R is their RETAIL version of the device so only they had it available from what I can tell.
Go with another device, if you need an AC router I would suggest the Netgear Nighthawk.

Extremely disappointed

I'm extremely disappointed in this router. I would lose wifi connections or slow-down wifi throughout the day and would have to reboot the router. The speeds are also so inconsistent. I tried factory reset and latest firmware and still has problems. I expected more from asus. The firmware seemed to be unfinished. Chatted with asus and I'm basically just waiting for the next firmware update. They said some time within a month. If it's not out before my return policy ends, I'm likely to return it for the netgear r7000.

Acceptable when it works
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Initial speed appears acceptable and comparable with its class of routers. However, as described in the 'Cons' section', this speed degrades to a screeching halt within 48 hours for the 2.4.
In my experience the deal breakers were:
1- Connection for the 2.4 starts off very fast (exceeding 100 mbps in some instances) and then degrades to a screeching halt (less than 1 mbps). Effectively, becoming unusable. Interestingly, the 5GHz continue to work. This is consistent with numerous other reviews (which I thought were referring to a faulty unit).
2- USB speeds are very slow. In essence comparable to those reported in the Small Network Builder review article.
Not a deal breaker, yet an indicator of serious quality control are:
1- The default router user ID and password did not work until I had to reset the router. This occurred right out of the box.
2- The online material is riddled with spelling error. Makes you think if the content is even accurate.

Great signal strength, but router menus failed.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I purchased this router to fill a new need for greater range. My high hopes in this respect were fulfilled. Had one fatal problem, however -- I could not adequately access the internal router menus. After 20 hours of hard work on this and a prior RT-AC66R, noticing others with a similar problem, and a detailed chat with ASUS Tech Support, I concluded that there is apparently a hardware or firmware flaw that no one knows how to diagnose or fix. Same problem using two computers and four browsers; only a borrowed iMac with a Safari browser apparently worked. My new Netgear 7000 now is working very well after a very brief, very smooth installation. Really appreciated Best Buy's easy return policies!

No Airprint!, otherwise good router

I've tried for many months to make it work with Airprint. ASUS does not support Airprint and has not produced a fimware revision to fix it. I've tried all the proposed fixes I could find on the web to no avail. This deficiency greatly reduces the utility of my iPad and iPhone. I'm going to junk my ASUS router and buy a new router so I can use airprint.

I purchased this router to replaced an old Linksys. Purchased last Wednesday and today I started seeing drop connections on various computers. When you're connected, speed is pretty good...just encounter too many drop connections. Will be returning the device. For $219, I will add the difference and purchase a Cisco RV220W.

ASUS said return it, right out of the box

So happy to have purchased this Router until I found that it did not save a settings/configuration file per instructions. One written help request to ASUS.COM per instructions (worthless) and two CHAT sessions (very helpful) resulted in an ASUS determination that the router could not be fixed and their were unidentified hardware or firmware problems that could not be overcome. Another inconvenience which has been discussed by others with ASUS is the innability to give a "friendly" name to the MAC addresses associated with your network. You need to keep a separate log or have a great memory. The router is easy to set up, but it is far from a basis router. Your installation can far more sophisticated in many specific applications and you will be pleased with how straightforward the settings can be accessed. Unfortunately, it is back to BestBuy for a straight return having lost my confidence in this company. FYI, BestBuy sold me an RT-AC68U (as presented at BestBuy.com and how the order was written). They fulfilled the order by selling me the BestBuy production model RT-AC68R.

Asus touts this $220 router, in part, for its parental controls. These apparently do not work at all. The internet blogs are filled with complaints. I spent 6 hours one day thinking I was doing something wrong because every time I enabled the parental controls, all devices with restrictions stopped working even though they were in the allowable period. After a few weeks and 2 firmware updates, every device on the filter slow to a crawl when the restrictions are on. For being as expensive as a tablet computer, I expext an advertised feature to work. It's going back within my 45-day return period unless the feature is working flawlessly by then, which I doubt.

At first I thought this was an answer to what ailed our network; faster speeds, stability, reliability. However, within hours of the setup, all the radios power output dropped to a point where the signal could not be detected 10 feet away in an open room, as read by my wi-fi signal meter.
Support offered no more help than "return to the store"
My recommendation: stay away from this one.

I replaced a Netgear N900 with this Asus 68 and I am very disappointed mainly with the weaker signal and slower speeds. Now my HD streaming drools constantly. I will switch back to Netgear again.

Dear Catmen,
Where do you normally place your router? If you plan to use 5 Ghz, please ensure that there are no obstruction as 5 Ghz signals are much weaker than 2.4 Ghz signals that they don’t even pass through walls or ceilings unlike 2.4 Ghz. If you have a device that is 5 Ghz capable, please ensure that this device is properly configured and it’s in close proximity. If you’d like to discuss this topic with me please contact me at [email protected] and include case#3475484 in the subject line. The range was not much better than our $30 Netgear, which is now reconnected as this router keeps dropping the connection. We also bought this router for its range, but that wasn't very good either. Overall, disappointed. Spent a lot of money but didn't get much of a router.
