    Acer PC disappointment

We purchased this PC as a graduation gift for our daughter in law so she could use on her Phd work in the fall. The hard drive crashed in setup, we took it back in and got a second Acer PC and it also failed due to hard drive issues right out of the box. Thankfully we were able to get an HP model that is working fine and we notice the Acer model was no longer on the floor. We would like to thank the folks at the store who helped her get through this and we are very thankful for their help.

I would honestly rate this product with 3 stars. However, I am sure with a bit hardware tweak, this can work great. All you need is a cloning software and one SSD, you can turn this sloth in to a beast. Speed and Processor: A $900 PC laptop should at least have a 64GB startup SSD. Comes with 12GB Ram and a 5400rpm mechanical drive. This machine comes with a 7th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-7500U Mobile processor. My 3 year old laptop with i5 processor runs way faster than this laptop with newest i7 quad core machine. Video: Comes with integrated GeForce 940MX graphics card, this is supposed to be a good video processor. LED display has backlight bleeding problem. HDD: 5400rpm mechanical drive - This drive alone kills this machines performance. RAM: 12GB - enough memory power - completely useless with 5400rpm HDD. - Bulky - Missing ethernet port. - Slowest HDD I would not recommend this laptop at this price range.

There are so many things about this computer I love. One thing I wish it had was a disk drive, I know most laptops do not come with those anymore but it would have been nice to have. But..the speakers on this product are great. The touch screens touch sensitivity exceeds my expectations and I use it more than expected. Screen quality/resolution is decent, not 4k but still nice. I LOVE that the keyboard lights up, I had never had that before and it really was not a deciding factor but it is really nice now that I have it. More importantly, the guts of this computer. I have so far not put too much on it as far as files and such. But more so programs, I have so far downloaded itunes, and 4 different adobe video/photo editing programs that I could not put on my old laptop because it just could not handle it. However this computer, even though it bogs down at times while working with an adobe program, has really overall handled my workload nicely. One thing I noticed when I first got it was start up really took FOREVER. It had been well over a hour of answering microsoft and asus questions and waiting for it to load before I finally saw a home screen and was able to check things out on it. Seemed like the first 5-10 times I used it after that, the laptop ran so slow, I didn't know what was going on but now it is quick to start up and load stuff. Overall I like this computer, it is impressive.

The HDD included impairs the user experience

Acer made an unfortunate decision to include a terrible HDD in this laptop which is a severe bottleneck that doesn’t allow the rest of the hardware to shine, and the user experience suffers as a result. [ Specs ] While most of the hardware specifications of this laptop are on par with other 2-in-1s offered at this price point, rolling out the new seventh generation Intel Core i7-7500U CPU, as well as including the dedicated GeForce 940MX GPU, appears to give it a certain hardware edge over many competing devices, on paper. [ Input / Output ] - The display is vibrant and very colorful, but also incredibly glossy. - The speakers output abundant volume and have above average sound quality. - The webcam is terrible, producing images that are severely lacking in detail; it is easily outperformed by the webcam in a $200 netbook that I own. - The microphones produce good quality audio with default volume levels that didn’t need to be adjusted. - While having chiclet keys, the backlit keyboard manages a fair amount of tactile feedback. [ Aesthetics ] The material and construction overall feels solid. The hinges provide a good deal of resistance to prevent undesired adjustment, while allowing smooth pivoting. The brushed metal appearance of the aluminum surface that shares space with the keyboard and touchpad looks nice, and includes a shiny chamfered outer edge as well as inner edge that skirts the touchpad. The attempt at crosshatch texturing on the aluminum surface behind the display, however, looks rather bad, with the vertical striations looking more like incidental damage than aesthetic design. I’m not sure if this is an aberrant product defect, a result from shipping damage, or perhaps is common to all units, but there seems to be something very odd about how the display and base are aligned relative to each other when the laptop is closed, resulting in corners and edges that don’t match up to a degree that’s quite obvious. [ Performance ] I’ve developed an absolute loathing of HDDs in mobile devices. Besides HDDs having historically terrible reliability in mobile devices, the major issue here is speed and performance, where the 5400 RPM HDD packaged in this laptop is an excruciating bottleneck in system performance. The boot-up process is slow, applications launch slowly, and it doesn’t take much for IO response times to skyrocket. Significant disk activity that saturates IO time can bring the system to a stand-still, making it unusable. Even simple and routine background tasks such as software updates often end up having an extremely negative impact on general system responsiveness. Replacing this HDD with an SDD feels like an absolute necessity, which seems to immediately negate the advantages this laptop started with in hardware specs, as most competing product lines have SSD options available (while there are currently no Aspire R15 models listed as having a SSD). Unfortunately, Acer does not provide a service manual or similar source of disassembly instructions for this laptop--a first for me among the many laptops and similar devices I’ve owned--which hampers my motivation to attempt such an upgrade. [ Industry standard negatives ] There are several issues with this laptop that are common among competing devices, but the following felt worth mentioning. - This laptop doesn’t seem so thin that it couldn’t accommodate an Ethernet port. Oddly, the official product page for this laptop lists, under “Network & Communication”: “Ethernet Technology”, “Gigabit Ethernet”; however, this laptop definitely does not have an Ethernet port, a feature I sorely miss. - While Insyde BIOS’ tend to be extremely basic, the implementation in this laptop is the most basic I’ve ever seen, missing several features available even in the Insyde BIOS of my cheap $200 netbook. Additionally, the BIOS’ boot manager screen often fails to show plugged in USB flash drives--particularly after a cold boot--requiring a reboot to have them show up; an issue I don’t experience on any of my other PC devices. - There are some aspects of the keyboard layout and design that irk me, but the worst offenders are the half-height up and down arrow keys.

Has just died for the second time. Last time was a bad hard drive. Geek Squad sent it back to Acer under warranty. Used it for three months and...boom...now won't boot at all. Last Acer product I will ever purchase.

Bought this computer on March 30, '17 seduced by the upgrades it provided me. Over the past few months the computer has been going into what I thought was hibernation mode which always required a hard start to get it awake. Fooled me; this time it died in its sleep. Apparently the motherboard is fried! I understand electronics are not infallible, but I expected a computer with such a high price tag would last longer than 1-1/2 years! (considering when the symptoms first appeared) I am back to using my Samsung that is now over 10 years old (and working fine, I might add) with no available resolution for my Acer; bye, bye $$$$$$$$$$
