I can't work on it if the battery is low and plugged in, very slow computer. If I need to do something quick i use my cell phone. Way over priced and poor quality. Would love to return but too late, have had 3 weeks.

Not sure I would purchase this brand. My son has been having issues with it, won’t start up. Seems like hardware failure. Shouldn’t happen only after 2 years of regular use.

First off I must say kudos to Acer on an amazing computer. This laptop is simply a beast when it comes to gaming. The graphics alone are worth the purchase of this computer. It is loaded with 12 GB of RAM and a 1 TB hard drive. Since using this computer I have not experienced any lags or hangups whatsoever. The processing power this laptop possess is leaps and bounds faster than my current desktop. One of my favorite things about this laptop is the back-lit keyboard which is perfect for those that game and/or doing the routine casual browsing at night. Windows 10 simply works hand in hand with this laptop and compliments the touch screen very nicely. The touch screen is by far my favorite thing about this laptop in addition to the fact that I can easily switch from laptop mode to tablet mode and continue working. Another feature that has blown me away is the 1080 FullHD 15.6" screen. Colors simply pop. The screen is so beautiful that I almost don't want to touch is, even though its touch screen. I also like that fact included is a regular sized HDMI port as well as a USB-C port. I would totally recommend this laptop for someone who is into PC gaming. Acer has hit a home-run with his laptop.

I spent a little over two weeks with the Acer R 15 before writing this review. I think it would be good to start off with the specifications. It has a 15.6 inch 1080P display that is run by both an Intel HD Graphics 620 and an Nvidia Geforce 940MX with 2 Gigabytes of video memory. It has a 1 Terabyte hard drive that runs at 5400 rpm, a seventh generation i7 processor that runs at 2.7 Ghz and 12 Gigabytes of RAM. It has a Qualcomm Atheros dual band AC network adapter along with a Bluetooth adapter. It has one USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB-C port, a headphone port, an HDMI port and a SD memory card port. The keyboard has a number pad and it is backlit. It is lightweight and only weighs about 5 pounds and is less than an inch thick. The Aspire R 15 has a convertible design so you can use it like a traditional laptop or flip the screen around to use it in tablet mode. You can fold the keyboard back and face down with the screen facing toward you for display mode or stand the system upside down in tent mode for movie viewing. Because of its screen size it can be a little awkward in tablet mode at first but it doesn’t take long to become accustom to it. It appears to be made of aluminum and the bottom is a soft plastic like the Samsung Galaxy S5 that makes it soft to the touch and comfortable to sit on your lap. The 15.6 inch, 1,920-by-1,080-resolution IPS touch screen shows accurate colors when you view the display from various angles, however there is some spotlighting in the lower corners. I did not notice any ghosting on my display. Both the touch screen and the touchpad work well, with no lag. The backlit keyboard is easy to type on. The sound system has two speakers on the bottom front edge and for laptop speakers they sound good with a good range. The speakers don’t have a lot of bass but they don’t sound overly tinny and I was pleasantly surprised how good they were. The 12 Gigabytes of RAM is more than enough for multitasking. Once Windows 10 finished loading I had dozens of browser tabs open along with some software programs during testing, without any noticeable slowdown. There are several extra programs and utilities preloaded on the system including Amazon, Kindle, Netflix, and Wild Tangent games, all of which are removable. Battery life is good but I was not able to get it to last for the stated 8 hours. I was however able to get it to last between 5 and 6 hours during use. The power cord is around 10 feet long and easily allows for some movement while connected to a power outlet. The Intel i7 processor coupled with all the other hardware in this laptop make it very fast and responsive however it does have a bottleneck in the 5400 RPM hard drive. I wish this laptop had come with a SSD drive that would have made it so much faster. I think that for the price of this laptop it should have come with an SSD drive but it shouldn’t be hard to add one in the future. I tested the video card by playing Sniper Elite 3. I didn't notice any visible slowdowns playing the game at its high setting and everything appeared smooth. The only issue I did notice was that once the system got hot and the fan kicked into high gear there was a slight whistle coming from the inlet on the bottom of the laptop. I don’t think there are enough open slits to allow enough air flow into the case and the lack of good air flow is causing a slight whistle. Overall the Pros of this laptop easily outnumber the cons and I am very happy with what I got and would easily recommend it to any of my friends or family. PROS Solid convertible design. Full 1080p HD touch screen. USB-C port. Good sounding speakers. Strong video performance. Strong processor with lots of memory. Good battery life. Slim, solid, lightweight and well built. Plenty of connectivity options. CONS Feels large in Tablet mode. Bloatware. No SSD drive. Slight fan whistle during high workload gaming.

I'm what some would call an Apple fanboy but this Acer laptop is sweet. Can be used as tablet, full 1080p, 3 USB ports, hdmi and the list goes on. I'm surprised by how beautiful it is. Nice and sleek. The screen is breathtaking. So far so good on speed. Haven't really put it through any rigorous testing yet. Battery life is great. I've had it for a week and haven't had to charge it much. I don't see how you can go wrong if you decide to purchase this laptop. It's a great choice.

I am pleased with the build quality, but the hard drive is a little on the slow side. I've experienced quite a bit of lag. Folders, apps, and menus take a while to load at times. I purchased a SSD drive to help speed things up, but it won't boot. It seems as though I may have to purchase recovery disks from Acer when switching hard drives based on info from their website. Would be nice if this was included. Recovery disks used to be provided with laptops years ago.

My last laptop was an Acer and it lasted for 7 years so I thought I'd look at this one (it wasn't on display; only the 8GB RAM version was). I was expecting to go all out and spend a lot of money. But this laptop was reasonably priced with a fast processor and dedicated graphics. I wanted 16GB of RAM, but 12GB is probably enough for intensive programs (it's not upgradable). Overall, the laptop is super-fast. I like how it goes from sleep mode to completely functional as soon as I open the lid, kind of like the way ultrabooks with SSDs do. Also, the unit stays very cool. The battery lasts about 6 hours, though I know this will diminish over time. Usual amount of bloatware, but this uninstalls easily. A little heavy for not having a disc drive (5lbs).

A very nice well built machine. I absolutely love the touch screen and keep this in the kitchen while cooking. I love the fact that Acer has kept the essential ports ( SD) which I am no where near ready to give up (Apple), and added USB 3.1. The hard drive could use some solid state, but for the price I could purchase 2 of these vs some of the competition. Also the screen flip makes the computer that much more user friendly i.e. tablet when I'm on the couch, laptop while I work, and display when I'm entertaining. My only fault is that the trackpad could use a little work.

    Potential

This has been one of the most frustrating computers I have had to review. It has tons of potential, but is hamstrung by Acer's short-sightedness. The Acer Aspire R15 is a decent notebook with the latest bells and whistles with one very huge caveat, the hard drive. The Acer ticks off all the relevant modern notebook boxes. It has a decent 15.6" IPS multi-touch screen with good viewing angles and average color reproduction with middling contrast. It is probably average in this price class. The touch responsiveness is excellent and I did not notice any lag. The only negative I saw was a considerable amount of backlight bleed on all four sides. While this is becoming common even among high-end brands it is a tad disappointing nonetheless. The plus side is that it is only really distracting on black or very dark screens. The Acer has 12GB RAM coupled to a Kaby Lake ULV i7 processor. The i7-7500U is the top of the line in the Intel Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) family and it is a super quick and responsive dual-core processor. Works great for light to medium tasks, but probably wouldn't recommend heavy tasks such as video editing on it. The keyboard is pretty average and a tad mushy for me, but certainly acceptable for long use. The trackpad works fine, but seems to lag a bit behind the cursor on the screen. The Acer has Nvidia Optimus technology meaning it can switch to the discrete GPU (a 940MX) for more demanding tasks. Don't expect to play any AAA games at Ultra settings with it, but it will certainly get you by at Low setting at a reduced resolution. It's a "nice to have", but just barely. Wi-Fi performance is top-notch. I was able to maintain 500+ mbps up/down on a gigabit internet connection. The speakers are only slightly above average, but still have a pretty muffled sound at loud volumes. Didn't detect any distortion with the volume at max so that is a plus. Now to the elephant in the room. It's 2016 and Acer has decided that a spinning hard drive is acceptable on a notebook of this class. Sorry, it's not. Not at all. The notebook simply does not perform like it should given all of the other specs thanks to a very slow conventional storage drive. It took 3+ hours to install updates to the machine on initial power-up. Yep, 3+ hours. I couldn't believe it myself. It's not 2008 anymore and solid-state drives should be standard at this price. You will certainly lose some capacity to keep it at its price point, but the speed difference would change the overall user experience so dramatically that it blows my mind that Acer engineers thought this was the better direction. Battery life is just acceptable. Acer rates this machine at 9 hours and that is optimistic to say the least. I saw 4 hours on average with 50% brightness and light computing such as video streaming and web browsing. Not exactly class leading and certainly wouldn't get you through an average work day. As a whole, the machine is decent. Reasonable weight and size coupled with the latest Intel processor. The hard drive is a deal breaker for me. I will have to investigate what the upgrade paths looks like. Otherwise, this Aspire will be short lived in my house.

    Solid Performance For Casual Gaming

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Okay! I don't see a point in rewriting all the specs you can read above, or talking about how the thing looks (it looks great, pretty much every other reviewer has said so. i mean, you can look at the pics and judge for yourself, right?). although to be clear: i am talking about the i7 processor model with the nvidia graphics card. i'm just going to jump into the things that *I* wanted to know from reviews and didn't often find! figure it may be more helpful than repeating what everyone else has already said, right? OK. here we go. -yes, the HDD is slower than SSD. i think its definitely worth looking into upgrading, but for those of us who are still used to using HDD its not a downgrade. it works perfectly fine in my opinion, not agonizingly slow like some commenters would lead you to believe just because it's not SSD. if its taking forever to come on there may just be something wrong with it and you should contact tech support. -basically the HDD is not a NEGATIVE for me, its just... a non-positive? -the laptop only has one hard drive bay, so to upgrade with the usual 2.5" form factor of SSD, you need to replace the HDD that comes with it. -this laptop has an M.2 slot, so you can add additional SSD without sacrificing the storage on the HDD. the laptop does not come with the screw you need to mount an M.2 SSD, so if you plan to do this make sure you purchase an SSD that comes with a screw. you need a 2280 SATA drive. ALRIGHT THATS OUT OF THE WAY NOW: -i'm a college student, so i mostly wanted this for school use, but i also like games so i wanted a laptop that could play fairly recent games on low/medium settings. no need for ultra or whatever, just able to use for casual recreational purposes. i've found it hard to find straightforward answers about any laptops performance in that regard, besides "this isn't a Gaming Laptop so dont expect Ultra settings" -i know its not a gaming laptop, i dont expect ultra. smh. -anyway, i havent bought brand new games for PC in a while since my old laptop wasnt the best for playing them. i think the most recent game i have is Battleborn, and before that, i think my most high demanding PC game was probably Dragon Age: Inquisition. not brand new obviously, but has demanding graphics, so i think it should give a general idea of its performance right?? -so i tested it on DA:I and Battleborn. on DA:I it auto-set almost all of the graphics settings to "medium" with textures on "ultra" and played perfectly. i fiddled with the settings a bit and turned a couple onto "high" and it still runs perfect. no lag or anything. i figure you can change around settings as you please and see what works, because you can probably set several of them to high without sacrificing framerate too much, depending on what you like. in battleborn, it once again auto set everything to medium. it looks nice and i got no lag at all. i havent fiddled with the settings on that one yet, but i imagine i'd get similar results as DA, though in this game lag time is a lot more important, since its more fast paced and online. -the fan does kick on pretty quick. obviously it got a bit loud while doing demanding things (re: the above mentioned video games), but it does also tend to kick on during normal browsing. it's not too loud, and the laptop does not physically feel hot, but it is mildly annoying to have the fan come on when you've just got a couple tabs open in chrome. -its a little bit smaller than my previous laptop (an acer aspire v5, also 15") but i think it weighs about the same. its not "Ultra Portable" or whatever, but i mean, it is a 15" screen so it's going to have a bit of weight to it. its not so heavy that i'll have an issue carrying it to school, at least in my opinion. -the wi-fi connection is great. in my old laptop, it couldnt get a solid internet connection in my bedroom so i had to use one of those wifi dongle things to extend it's reach. this laptop connects everywhere in my house perfectly and i get good speed. -i use this laptop for artwork, the color accuracy is pretty great. my last screen was horrible for it. my 2nd monitor is a true color screen and this laptop matches it very closely. if you do digital artwork, i'd say this is a good choice. i haven't tried to run photoshop on it, but i mainly work in paint tool sai and it runs very nicely. i imagine photoshop would work great too, just based upon this laptops general performance. -i havent run the battery all the way down yet, but i did have it unplugged for a couple hours doing setup stuff, installing and uninstalling programs, doing downloads and stuff, and it only got down to about 50%, and estimated over 3hrs more of use. so i would imagine that if you were bringing this to class, it would last you all day for just school stuff like taking notes or something. but i havent tested this just yet. and just a couple of minor things: -the keyboard is really nice to type on. maybe just because i was already used to the acer keyboard with my old laptop, but it didnt take me any getting used to and hasnt effected my typing speed or caused any undue typos. it feels nice, makes satisfying typing noises without being loud and clacky. -people complain about the screen being overly shiny. in all honestly unless you have a bright light shining directly on it, this is not noticeable during everyday use. you might accidentally see your reflection when the screen goes all the way black. but the IPS screen makes it very easy to just change the screen angle without effecting the visuals. the shiny screen has not bothered me at all. might be annoying if you use your laptop outside but like, how often do you use your laptop in direct sunlight? for me thats pretty much never. -there is a bit of light bleed, but so far for me it has ONLY been noticeable when the screen is COMPLETELY black. otherwise i haven't seen it at all, even on darker screens. -bloatware is annoying, but removable. WOW this was really long winded. sorry. just trying to be thorough. TL;DR -this runs fairly modern games on pretty good settings. doesn't get you to ultra, but good enough to be a solid and enjoyable gaming experience. not many other 2in1s have the specs to be able to do this. -screen looks really nice for doing artwork, the shininess hasnt bothered me at all -if the HDD bothers you, you can upgrade to SSD pretty easily, and even have a dual hard drive set up using the M.2 -not super light, but not too heavy to transport. the weight is the sacrifice you make for the big screen, i think. -mildly annoying fan activity. not horrible but not great either. the laptop stays cool though. so in the end, this is exactly the laptop that i was looking for! my main complaint is the fan is annoying, but others have said its not audible at all, so maybe its just something i'm doing. by the way, college students can get $50 off this laptop until mid february. just sign up for their college deals.

I like the metal premium feel and dedicated gpu. Its fast and the screen display's all the rgb color space. It has a nice selection of ports and does all the yoga type poses. The bad is its extrmeely slow with the hdd and has a loud fan. A shame to open up a new laptop to put on a ssd drive to unleash the power inside. Also the power adapter is very cheap and I have concerns about its durability.

    Upgrade the Hard Drive

    Posted .

This is by far one of the best laptops I have ever purchased for the price. However, as many of you know or have read, the hard drive is horrible only because you are unable to utilize this laptop to its full potential. With that being said, I decided to purchase this laptop along with a 480GB Solid State Drive (SKU 4825401). I also purchased a Hard Drive Enclosure Docking Station (SKU 9062073) as it makes it easier when doing an image of the hard drive, plus I have been wanting one anyways. Took me no more than 30 minutes to upgrade this laptop from a slow HDD to a fast SSD. As for taking the hard drive out, this was actually very easy. 12 screws on the back of the laptop (other wise of keyboard). Once you take the back out, you quickly see the hard drive, just a simple unplug and plug in for the SSD and this PC is a monster! Games a great though you can hear the fan when playing some graphic driven games but the audio is by far amazing on this laptop that you can easily drown out the fan noise if it really bothers you that much. With the SSD added, boot up time from push button to windows desktop is 7 seconds. Overall, I spent total on this laptop about 1,000 dollars and it is worth every penny since this includes the Gen 7 i7 + 12GB memory + an NVIDIA graphics card + the added SSD.

finally found a laptop I like as far as performance is concerned. I bought almost 3 weeks ago and now the hinge to the lid is resisting opening. I have tried reaching Best buy on the phone and can't get anyone to help. They just keep transferring me to a phone that rings without being answered. Tried reaching Acer and all I get is people from another country that do not speak understandable English. Cannot get a supervisor to speak with me. I am not a happy camper right now and would not buy Acer ever again. $900 out? that's what it feels like.

I am so disappointed with this item. Bought it 3 months ago. After 3 months it just would not power up. Sadly Best Buy only works with you in a 30 day period. So I had to reach Acer for warranty. The only thing they would do is have me send to them for repairs. They had to change mainboard and a few other small tweaks. After 3 weeks it was returned and the screen finally goes back on. Within an hour I discovered that the speakers now do not work and the lights under keypad don't work either. And they never sent my power cord back. Called Acer and guess what they said? Send it back again. They sent me overnight priority shipping label again and now it's 5 days and it still is not in Acer's possession! Will probably be another 2 weeks at least counting a total of about 6 weeks without my computer after Acer messed it up during their possession and repair. I use this machine for work and now have not worked in 4 weeks because of this. Lost over $3400 in salary plus $950 on this awful machine. It is nothing but problems and I will be taking this loss to court. I have not been able to pay my mortgage this month and may be another month before I can afford to pay my bills up. Totally bad customer service with Acer and I strongly urge anyone considering this item to reconsider. This machine is not as advertised in performance. Even though there is 12 gb ram and I-7 core, it means nothing if you have a slow hard drive which this machine is equipped with. Absolutely will never buy anything associated with the Acer name again.
