This Chromebook packs a lot of features into a small package. The 12 inch screen is in a 3:2 aspect ratio instead of the more theatrical wide aspect ratios that most laptops feature these days. This aspect ratio is great for people like me that spend most of the day reviewing documents and little time looking at video. The more vertical aspect ratio allows me to see more of the page at once and as a result I have to scroll less.
This Chromebook comes with kid resistant keys, a keyboard that repels over 10 ounces of spilled liquid, is rated to survive a 48+ inch drop and can withstand 130 lbs of weight. This sounds like it's about as safe a bet as you can get to let the kids use of throw in a checked bag.
Battery life has been great. I can get through a work day without plugging in and have seen little battery drain while dormant. The touchpad works better for me than the pad on my expensive desktop replacements does. There are 4 Gb Ram and 32 Gb eMMC memory. This Chromebook was quick to set up and comes with all of the Chrome apps that one expects. The Celeron processor and Intel graphics do a much better job than the last net-book type computer I had, I really can't tell that I'm not on a regular computer.
For me, this is a lightweight, inexpensive, ruggedized computer that I can travel with and not worry too much about it getting damaged or stolen. I keep all of my sensitive documents and data on thumb drive which can be removed when I check it in a bag or leave it in a hotel room. With the military grade ruggedization and kid resistant keys, I don't mind letting grandkids use it now and then, I wish they had had something like this when my kids were students.

got this on a deal of the day. my daughter has to have one for school and the school wanted me to sign a waiver if anything happened to her book we would have to pay an absurd amount to fix/replace it. So u decided to purchase one for her. it synced right to her school google account. Everything works on this as it should shes only had it for a day but so far so good

I have several computers I use on a daily basis. So I had a hard time justifying this purchase. But I'm GLAD I DID! The build quality exceeds full laptops at 5x the price. And it has remarkably snappy response with daily tasks like email, watching videos, etc. My only regret is that I didn't try this sooner!!!

The Acer 512 is a good basic sturdy laptop perfect for office tasks. It is very capable of running Office suite apps, web browsing, conference calls, and the like. I used Office 365 suite, administration tools, RDP, Skype, watched some videos, all without any issue. All worked smoothly.
The battery seems to last forever. It lasted all day with a half day of juice left in the tank. It charges up pretty quick with the compact and light USB-C charger. I like that there is a USB-C port on each side. You can connect the power or USB-C peripheral on the side that work best for your situation. There is also a USB 3 port on each side, a small SD card slot on the left and a lock slot on the right, which is not listed in the specs, but is there.
With light weight yet “rugged” features, it’s perfect for traveling. Being rugged and solid, the light weight is surprising. It feels like it should be heavier, It’s more crush proof than others, so it will be more likely to survive in an over packed bag or backpack. The case has a textured surface so its east to hold onto. This would also be a good choice for use by students, even young kids who may be more likely to spill something. It holds more weight, e.g. more crush proof, so good for an over packed backpack. The laptop feels solid, hinges are tight by move freely with no slop. This model is to Chromebooks what the Panasonic Toughbook is to laptops.
While rugged, performance and other features are mostly basic. If you need to edit many photos or videos, this is not the device for you. But nothing at this price really is suitable for that.
The hardware is a mixed bad of good to very good. The touchpad is OK, but not up to what I am used to with other PC’s. I quickly added a wireless mouse. The IPS screen looks good, its tall, which put more content on the screen, which I really liked for RDP sessions which otherwise get squished on other Chromebooks. Its not a touchscreen, which would have helped compensate for the so-so touchpad. I do like the keyboard. I found it responsive with a good solid feel, not overly noisy, not backlit. The speakers sounded very clear for a small laptop. I found them bit light on bass, which is the norm, but they were exceptionally clear which is really beneficial on Skype calls.
Overall I find this Ruggedized Chromebook with the sturdiness, tight fit and long battery life to be a really good value and perfect for traveling. Its sturdy, but not so expensive I’m concerned with it getting scratched up. It does what I need when traveling and most of what I do when I’m not. I have no qualms recommending this to someone with similar needs or preference of survivability or a quality feel over other features.
