Still in the process of learning the Chromebook. Have had intermittent connection issues with Wi-Fi, that I don't have with my Windows laptop. Still trying to figure that out. Also, Webcam is not high resolution, wish I thought about checking that before buying. It is an inexpensive Chromebook, and you get what you pay for.

A nice, budget Chromebook

For $220, the Acer 512 is a budget solution in the Chromebook lineup. You simply cannot be expecting a lot for this price range, but the Acer 512 still provides a solid Chromebook experience.
From my perspectives, the Acer 512's strengths:
- Great battery life (like battery for days, seriously!)
- Lightweight
- Rugged construction
- Relatively smooth user experience, with plenty of power under the hood running Google's ecosystem of apps
Weaknesses:
- So-so screen (lacks brightness and definition, again, I know this is a low price point so cannot expect much) which has huge bezels on it taking up a lot of real estate.
- Cheap and plasticy
- Spongy keyboard for heavy typing.
In conclusion, I can see the Acer 512 as a great unit for kids going to school, as the rugged build and cheap cost make it a good choice for parents on a budget who don't want to spend a ton on a laptop for their kids. Those who are looking for a Chromebook with an HD display, a higher quality feel, and a keyboard meant for intense, fast typing would be better off spending a little extra money and stepping up to a slightly higher-end (with a higher price tag) Chromebook. But, for the money, this is a really good, budget Chromebook.

Small profile, lightweight so you can take it with you. This laptop is a better alternative to tablets or pads in my opinion for its usefulness and portability, It is ruggedly built, so I am putting it in my backpack to take with me on trips or outside to work. Great battery life on a single charge. The solid build and spill resistance is a huge draw for this unit since I will be using it for traveling. It doesn't have the touchscreen capabilities of some of other Chromebooks, but this is not missed given its other features. I also really appreciated the fact that it was basically out of the box ready. Just open it and log in to your existing accounts w Google and you are up and running. Nice little unit for the price for what I need will be using it for!

Good Sturdy Machine

This is an entry level Chromebook that definitely should be considered by those on the go! rugged and durable easily handles small juggles with those all-most catches near the floor. Bounces right back. I envision entry level usage because what you get is 100% function of the core chrombook apps without any bogging down. It’s not until you start adding some of your own apps will you notice any slight pauses.
Appears very rugged and well built. Looks well suited to jobs in a less than a less sterile environment . If you work in an outdoor or a rough environment this should be on you short list. After a full charge I was able to power on a remarkable 11 hours of use
Display format allows for everything to be seen and just works great in this setup. Storage can be added via USB-C X2 or standard usb X2. Off course you can stream it all!
Great unit at its price point on sale.

Right tool for some jobs -- Read the whole review

Growing up, my dad always told me, "Use the right tool for the job." That's what I think of when I consider this chromebook.
THE GOOD
~ Relatively small
~ Fairly lightweight
~ Spill resistant (I haven't braved this test)
~ Decent feeling keyboard
~ Decent enough graphics for the right job
~ web cam built in
THE BAD
~ Feels toy-like (like cheap plastic feeling)
~ Large bezel around a small screen
~ No right-click (must tap with two fingers on the same hand to imitate the right click)
~ No "Start" menu
THE MEH (could go either way)
~ Almost impossible to find system data
~ Extremely limited space
~ Very limited capabilities
~ Can install MS Word (if you subscribe) or OfficeSuite if you don't want to use Google Docs
~ God only knows what info Google is collecting and storing about you
~ Whole new operating system with learning curve
~ Android Playstore
OVERALL
I do a lot of writing. As such, I wanted to try this out as a solution for an inexpensive tool to carry around to wherever I decide to write. For that, it is definitely the right tool for the job. It is an inexpensive notebook that, if by chance I drop or lose it, I won't be cursing myself for how much money I just wasted.
I also do a lot of photography, graphic arts work, and gaming. This is *not* the tool for that. I have desktops and other laptops much better suited for such tasks.
As noted above, if you don't want to use Google docs, you can download Office Suite for free from the playstore. Also, if you already subscribe to Microsoft Word, you can download that and sign in. It will work and still save your docs to the cloud for you.
So, who is this the right tool for? For whom would I recommend it?
It's a decent solution for business people who just want to carry a cheap laptop to read emails, watch some YouTube videos, maybe teleconference (I did this and the picture and sound quality was fine), and maybe compose some documents. It's also a good solution for parents on a budget who want to get young kids something on which they can do homework, surf the web or do the other things just mentioned. It isn't a work horse and probably would not keep up with the demands most college-age (and perhaps older teen) students would want to put on it.
I truly detest the lack of a right-click. We've spent almost 30 years training people to right-click and now Google has the bright idea of "click with 2 fingers at the same time."
I'm a computer geek. I like to be able to look at my system. I used to dual boot with windows and linux. I mainly use windows now with 5 or 6 hard drives in my desktop. I want to be able to quickly view my drives, available space, running processes, etc. None of that is simple on this thing. If you aren't a geek or don't want access to this capability, it won't bother you.
I think a touch screen seems like it would be more appropriate for this device than the built-in pas and single click bar.
I gave it 3/5 stars because it is simply average. Nothing about it feels "special." It isn't horrible. Nor is it great. It looks, feels, and behaves like a mediocre or average device. It do3es what it's supposed to with no bells, no whistles and nothing leaving me saying, "Wow, glad I have this."
***IMPORTANT***
I am clicking yes, I would recommend this to a friend. I would recommend this the same way I would recommend a phillips head screwdriver to a friend using a phillips head screw. Yes, a flat head screwdriver might work, but "use the right tool for the job." So, I would only recommend this to *some* people.
