Quality issues ruin a good tablet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have had several Acer products during the past 12 years, Including a laptop and desktop which I currently own. They have always worked fine, lasted many years and never had any quality issues. Therefore, I expected the same with this tablet. Out of the box, the Iconia One 8 is attractive, small enough to hold comfortably in your hand, yet large enough to see the screen and use all of the touch features without difficulty. It feels solid. Heavy enough to evoke quality, but light enough to hold for long periods. The back panel is textured which results in better grip, no fingerprints and gives it a richer look. The first thing I did was to charge the tablet, which lead to my first gripe. The usb cable is way too short. It's difficult to find a table low enough and close enough to an outlet to use. When using the tablet I found the screen quality to be very good. Print was clear, video playback was high quality, and touch sensitivity fine. The processor was snappy with very little lag. Apps opened quickly and web pages loaded with appropriate speed. However, when you do play a video, whether on youtube or Netflix, the next problem reveals itself. The speaker is awful. The sound is tinny and dialogue and lyrics are difficult to understand. It absolutely ruins the experience. I had to attach an external speaker. The tablet also comes with a micro sd card slot capable of adding up to 128 gb of additional storage. However, I found it very difficult to properly seat the card in the slot. Every time I inserted the card, it would pop out. You could see that the tablet recognized the card, but the slot just couldn't hold it. Finally, after too many attempts to count, I inserted the card so deeply into the slot that I will probably never get it back out. But it stayed in and it works. The tablet comes with a 5mp rear facing camera and a 2mp front facing camera. I found the picture quality of both front and rear, in both still and video modes to be fine as long as you have plenty of light. And there are many customizations to help improve the quality. However, here I found the worst of the quality issues. There is a defect in the lens of the rear camera which produces a 1-2 inch black smudge in all pictures and videos. I called Acer customer service and based on my description, they confirmed that it sounded like a defective part. In the end, I wanted to like this tablet, could have loved it, but quality issues make me not recommend it.

Great tablet for a basic user.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: -Platform: Android 5.1 -Processor: MTK MT8163 (1.3 GHz Quad-Core -Internal Memory: 16GB with 1GB of RAM -Additional Micro SD slot to add more memory -Dual Cameras 5mp and a 2mp -Wifi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0 Cons: -Processor: Its a MTK with 1.3GHz doesn't hold up well with multiple apps running at the same time. -RAM: 1GB of RAM is pretty much useless to run multiple apps. You begin to notice a lot of lag! I prefer at least 4GB of RAM to get nice fluency. -No SIM card slot? Makes it pretty much useless on the road unless you invest into a mobile HotSpot. -Camera's running a 2MP? Come on you would think it would invest in higher resolution. Overall: This would be great for a basic user that has patience and uses one app at a time or not a huge app down loader like myself. I diffidently would NOT recommend for gaming. You will need a case to keep it protected. Great for jotting notes and basic pictures.

Zippy, expandable tablet good for most uses
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed to replace my aging Android tablet, so I went with this one. Even though my old tablet wasn't very old, this one feels much faster. With a quad-core processor and 5GHz wifi, it updates apps and games really quick (even large games). It also has a microSD slot, which is a must have if you want to watch movies or put lots of apps on there (although the 16GB of storage is very generous). That said, I did have some intermittent wifi connectivity issues, which is why I'm rating it a 4/5 stars instead of 5 stars. It could be that one of the updates fixed it - as usual with any new tablet, there are tons of updates immediately available. Acer adds a lot of Acer-branded apps that might be useful, but I haven't had a chance to try them. If they're not useful, the nice thing about the latest Android releases is that you can uninstall all updates and "disable" the app so that it's not taking up any more resources.

Surprisingly capable little tablet.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I want to preface this review by stating that this tablet is the first Android based device I have ever used (I have not even played with a friend’s Android smartphone). That being said, I am impressed with this little Acer product. And even more so when I look at the price point it sells at. Since I am still learning the ins and outs of the Android operating system, I feel unqualified to comment on that aspect of using the Iconia One 8. I don’t use any of our household’s computing devices for my job so I would not classify myself as a “power user”, but I am more than just a casual web-surfer. The quality of materials is not impressive (plastic back cover and case-colored plastic buttons) if you are used to holding Apple products without a case, but put a case on all devices and this ceases to be a factor. The display is clear, sharp, and colorful even when compared to a Retina display. I did find that the display will not dim enough for me when I used the Kindle app in a dark room - I had to switch from a white background to black to lessen eye strain. The functionality of the touchscreen is excellent as everything moves as smoothly as you would expect it to on a device costing hundreds of dollars more - I found it to actually work better than my iPhone 6. Personally I would appreciate a wider bezel on the sides (when using it in portrait mode) to make it easier to handle the device without accidentally touching the screen and having something happen onscreen. I have already ordered an inexpensive cover hoping that will make handling the Iconia a little easier. For me, using this device is usually a two-handed operation as it is uncomfortable for me to grip it from side to side in one hand for any length of time. I am a little hard of hearing and this makes the built-in speaker absolutely worthless for anything, even as a simple timer or alarm. It is just not very loud, even in a quiet room. Audio output from the speaker is not even close to my iPhone 6 speaker. Connecting to a Bluetooth speaker was as easy as any other device I have ever used and the sound quality and volume were both good when used in this fashion. Sound quality using earbuds is good, but the device gives a loudness warning when you turn it up past about 3/4 volume and at that point I don’t think the volume being produced is dangerous even to people with good hearing. The volume my old iPod Nano puts out is way more than this Iconia. I think Acer is a little overly optimistic about the audio amplifier of this device. If audio is important to you I would make sure and demo this device before buying to make sure it fulfills your needs. The USB to mini USB cable is short at 32 inches, but it is sufficiently long if the device is left on the kitchen counter to charge or if your desk is right next to a wall outlet. The short length will make it virtually impossible to try and use the tablet while it is plugged in. The nice thing is that it does not use a proprietary connector like some devices do, so it is pretty inexpensive to get a longer cord to suit your needs. Battery life was very good in my opinion, but that obviously hinges on what you are using the device for and how many hours a day you use it. In closing, I have to say that with the limited life expectancy of electronic devices (technology always marches on), I will probably not buy another iPad, but rather get a new Android tablet every year or two thus staying up-to-date with hardware capability and still end up spending less in the long run. If you are looking for an inexpensive tablet for your kids, this is it. No one will cry over the money if it gets broken or lost. Would I recommend the Acer Iconia One 8 to a friend…most definitely.

OK, tablet. Ideal for kids
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, i must admit I am more of an Apple guy than Android, so it took some getting used to in order to really get into this device. For an 8" tablet with 1gb of ram and 16gb of internal storage, it is a decent entry level unit. If you arent really much of a "techie" person, this may be ideal for you.I got this unit yesterday and played with it with my kids for about 6 hours or so. I like that I can add memory via a microsd card, which i used to add movies for 4 and 5 year old to watch and they enjoyed it. The picture is surprisingly clear and crisp and it had good volume. The battery came fully charged and after about 6 hours of playing with it and watching a movie, I still had about 2+ hours left of battery life. I let my kids play with it and they seemed to pick it up pretty quickly, which surprised me since they are used to iPads. I hooked this unit up to the TVs inside of my wife's SUV and the video played back on the screens. I think this unit will be ideal for my family for road trips and keeping the kids occupied while we are driving. I plan to fill up a memory card with nothing but movies and let them use this unit to watch movies as opposed to carrying multiple DVD's in her SUV. All in all for an entry level tablet, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to use. This tablet isnt super fast, but you wouldnt expect it to be chock full of high end specs at this price point, but my first experience with an Android tablet was not too bad. I plan to play with this more of the next couple of days, by purposely putting my iPad down and trying to use this unit like i would my iPad. I will update this review if i find anything good or bad about it.

Pretty good entry level tablet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first Acer tablet. I've had another brand's Android tablet before, and have also had iPads. Overall, this is a pretty good value for the money. Is it the snappiest tablet available... no. Can it stream movies and keep the kids entertained with their apps... yes. My only other complaint is the sound on the tablet itself. It it very tinny and cheap sounding. My kids don't mind, but for watching a video, headphones are a better way to go. It doesn't wow me, but it is fast and responsive enough to tackle normal, everyday tasks. With 16GB, you might need to purchase a Micro SD card to expand storage capabilities for videos or music, but those are cheap too.

Very good tablet for the money
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using this tablet for about a month now and I'm impressed with it. The screen resolution is nice, it has a sufficiently fast processor, and the size and weight feel well balanced. I got this tablet to compare with an LG Gpad and I gotta say I use the Acer more. The Gpad has better screen resolution but the Acer processes just as fast, it has much less bloatware and the size just suits me better. For a budget tablet it does everything I need it to do and it does it well. If you can buy it for under $100 you can't go wrong.

"Okay" Entry-Level Tablet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you're looking for a powerful Android tablet for play and work, this is not it. If you're looking for an entry-level tablet for light gaming, web browsing, and media consumption, then you should consider picking this tablet up. THE GOOD: It's not as fast as a new iPad or Samsung tablet (my Nexus 9 feels faster, and it's two years old), but it doesn't feel sluggish. It doesn't have the latest powerhouse specs, but it's not supposed to. It's meant to be a cheap tablet to cover the basics. I was able to watch Netflix just fine, the web browser moves and responds fast enough, and it was able to play most of the games I enjoy playing on my Nexus 9 (the One 8" is a little under-powered to run Hearthstone). THE BAD: It has a 5MP camera on the back and a 2MP camera on the front. Both are not great when compared to other tablets its size or current smartphones (not that I take pictures with a tablet). The speaker is also pretty weak and is located on the back of the tablet. If you're going to watch a movie or stream music, I would HIGHLY recommend using earbuds/headphones. The build quality isn't that great. It doesn't feel very sturdy, and I get the occasional creaking when I apply pressure to the screen near the bottom of the tablet. OVERALL: If you're looking for a cheap tablet to play casual games (like Candy Crush), watch videos, listen to music, or surf the web, this tablet will work just fine. Why break the bank when you just want to surf the web and play simple games on a small tablet?

Great all tablet in a portable size
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This tablet is good for general use and has a bright HD Ips screen for excellent readability and video viewing. The OS is Android 5.1 and is smooth. The tablet is easy to hold in one hand and is very thin and light. The touch screen is accurate and responsive. The tablet has 16gb of internal storage. There is an SD card slot that will accept up to a 128gb card. Acer includes a kids center and a few games as well as a cloud storage account. If you want to listen to music a good set of Bluetooth headphones or speaker is needed as the built-in speaker has poor fidelity. Overall this is a great tablet for the price.

Lemon
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This tablet ceased working after a few months and would have cost more than the purchase price to repair. Every time it was turned on it would start updating 150+ applications. Sometimes the updates were completed, sometimes it stopped in the middle and started over! Either way it took a long time.

Basic tablet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First impressions the build quality is good, the display is bright. Once I started using it I noticed the audio is poor and as the volume is raised the sound gets distorted, if the tablet is placed against any object the sound gets muffled. Camera quality is horrible. There are gestures in the settings to add to unlock the screen like double tapping and it worked every time that was a nice touch. The speed was average for downloading or browsing the internet. I would only recommend this for someone who isn't looking for a tablet to replace a computer or anyone who knows a lot about technology. It's good for a 6-12yr old if you don't want to buy one of the more expensive tablets. It is easy to use and set up. Having a micro sd card slot is also a bonus. The 8 inch size is great to hold in hand. If you need a tablet just for basic use as browsing the internet, playing games, watching movies or videos this tablet will do the job. But if you need a better camera or audio or bigger screen or more computer like features this tablet is not for that.
