Budget tablet that works reasonably well
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had well over a dozen Android devices over the past 7 or so years, and while this tablet certainly isn't the worst service I've had and actually performs rather admirably, there's still no doubt that you get what you pay for in this case. To start off, the good. While the screen is a mixed bag (the resolution is a glaring negative, especially for anyone used to a modern retina/qHD+ style screen, and black levels are pretty bad), screen uniformity on my unit was excellent. No corner/edge light bleed, no dead pixels, no issues overall. General performance is also decent; most definitely good for watching videos on YouTube or Google Play Movies (assuming the lack of high resolution isn't off-putting to you), good for browsing, and even passable for some light gaming (here, the resolution is a plus, since it takes less horsepower to render less pixels). Now, the not so good. The bundled software hinders the experience rather than adds to it overall. The Acer launcher, music and photo apps are highly unnecessary. The barrage of setup screens it presents you with on first load will most likely be intimidating to new to Android users. Speaking of which, this tablet isn't for anyone looking for the latest and greatest Android update. My unit came loaded with 5.1 and has not received an update as of this writing. Also, the camera is what can only be described as useless. The amount of pixelation in the pictures makes them look like they were taken in 05 on a RAZR flip phone. Finally, battery life isn't great. Overall, this tablet is what it is; a budget tablet that's great for browsing, decent for watching movies and videos, and ok for gaming. It would probably make a great starter device for someone that doesn't need anything fancy or expensive.

Seems nice for $69!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Full Disclosure: I received the Acer Iconia One 8 in exchange for an honest review. Overall, I think $69 is a difficult price point for anyone to hit and I'm impressed with what Acer has provided here. Processor, memory, touch screen, camera, WiFi, etc. At pretty much the price of a fully loaded Raspberry Pi computer. Amazing. I have only had the product for one day, so I can't say anything about battery life or overall longevity, but the unit works and does what you would expect of an economy priced Android tablet. It is light weight. The case is plastic, but has a pleasant feel. The screen is bright, colorful and has very decent resolution. My normal platform is Apple iOS, so Android is not my native environment. For that reason, I can't comment on Acer's implementation of Android versus that of any other OEM. One thing that struck me was the needed to log into Google and also create an Acer ID. It reminded me that Apple is a bit unique in its offering of a completely unified environment where the hardware and software both come from the same company. Presumably most Android devices require this dual relationship with the software and hardware providers. Also, I generally use a 9.7" tablet, so I found the usable screen area on this 8" tablet to be a bit small for my needs. Since most applications have navigation overhead in their screen design, a little extra screen area offers significantly more benefit than the pure mathematical difference in size might indicate. The camera is OK. Not as good as my iPad Air 2, but the Air 2 costs ten times as much as this tablet, so it makes sense. Don't expect to submit your photos in contests, but they will fine for most purposes. Overall, I'd say that I personally wouldn't buy a tablet like this because I can afford to buy a higher end device and I value what I get for that extra investment. However, a lot of people live on very tight budgets and I could see where this low priced device could give those people basic access to the Internet at a very affordable price point. So I'll say that I would recommend this to a friend, but note that this is highly related to the personal needs and resources of the person to whom I would me making this recommendation. For people on tight budgets who want a basic tablet, this appears to be a very decent value.

Dead in a month.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As much as I would like to give a honest review of this device I can't. After less than a month of use the tablet died on me and has had to be sent back to Acer for repair.

not bad but not great
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The acer tablet is a good tablet for very casual user or web searches some games. But not good for movies. Packaging: Very simple minimalist packaging. Tablet usb and wall charger. info paper. Size: The size of the tablet is nice not to big and not too small. It does have a little weight to it. The back of the tablet has some grip to it to keep it from sliding out of your hands. Set up: Super easy set up. The tablet comes with a film on it I've left it till i get a screen protector super easy to smudge. It ask for your regular google info. it did take a bit of time to load when you put your email address in. It comes with samples of games that you have to download and a kid app for a kid area for very young children to play in a protected mode where you can sent some parental controls. Apps: downloading from the android store is simple. It loaded without issue. one of the apps crashed. The games tend to hang on loading but play well after. Web searcing works well. Sound: Movies play nicely on the tablet look great but the sound is unacceptable. There's one speaker small on the back of the device near the bottom. The sound is hard to hear even when put to max as well as max on the app. Its hard to hear even with headphones. The volume buttons are also reversed compared to most devices. This leads to confusion when trying to turn the volume up or down. I would recommend for web browsing and very causal use but not for movies or gaming.

Slim and strong case, good performance
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I am an apple user, I have an iphone and a Samsung smartphone, as well as an Ipad mini. Bu I have to admit that the Iconia gave me a nice surprise. Beside the fact that I really like the option to add more storage by a sim card, I also have more choices of apps to install with Google play. I like the 8 inches Screen, and the performance is really good,

Good Budget Tablet - Great Price
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. There are so many android tablets now most are good enough in my experience. This tablet works well, connects to WiFi easily, has a micro sd slot for memory expansion, the price is right, the size is right. the only negative is the Acer bloatware , just don't set it up and it should not be an issue. other than that whats not to like?

Sweet Little Speedster
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I won’t name the brand, but my 3- or 4-year-old 10-inch tab was getting a bit sluggish – long in the tooth, as they say. Good grief, how far this technology has come in such a short time! I thought an 8-inch would be a good compromise between a 10- and 7-incher (I use it mostly for surfing the Web and reading in bed.) I was right. What really blew me away is how *fast* this thing is, beginning with boot up and continuing with games, Web pages, Kindle, and on and on. It is dramatically peppier than my old tab. Plus, it isn’t overloaded with bloatware, so there’s plenty of available storage space. This light, pretty little Acer is precariously close to no-name territory in terms of price, but just totally exudes quality. This is clear the moment you open the neatly packed box. It took me all of two minutes to get it up and running. The downside? There isn’t much of one. I haven’t noticed the audio problems that others have mentioned, but I do wish the speaker had been placed differently. Battery life seems average, but average is just fine for me. Overall, particularly at this price, I can’t conceive of going wrong.

A lot snappier than my Samsung Nook
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I just received this unit and plugged it in. It seemed to charge to 100% in no time. I went through the initial setup screens and it found my Nook backup. It let me choose to use the backup in it's entirety or to pick and choose the apps I wanted to import. Out of 86 apps, I chose 29 from the Google Play store. A lot of the other apps were the Samsung preloaded junk. The Acer imported those apps really quick and let me get to using the tablet. It updated and sorted my apps while I was busy playing with it. I tried a word search game that sometimes lags on the Nook, but it flies on the Acer. No lag at all. So far I think I'm going to like the Acer as my first choice Android tablet! Now to go pick up a micro sd card.

No frills, decent value
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Acer Iconia One 10 is a budget, no frills Android tablet. The screen has reasonable color reproduction, but the resolution is too low for this size screen. Processor is moderately snappy. It's not going to set the world on fire, but it can get basic tasks done such as internet browsing without any fuss. The tablet does offer side-by-side multitasking for specific apps and it handles them with ease. Battery life is actually a high point for the Iconia One. I got some of the best standby time I have ever experienced with an Android tablet. Not quite on par with an iPad, but far better than say a Galaxy Tab S. Audio is pretty average and nothing to write home about, but is serviceable. The microSD card slot is a nice addition given the relative limited space of the unit. As a whole, it is a decent value priced tablet and would make a good child's starter tablet.

Great Value Tablet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The tablet market is crowded with cheap tablets. Most of these cheap tablets run Android of some flavor, usually an old version. This Acer Iconia One tablet is running Android 5.1 which is a vast improvement over the previous versions. I think the best way to review this tablet is to list the pros and cons. Everyone uses tablets in different ways, there is no right or wrong one, just different tablets for different people. Pros: - Cheap <$100 - Has a microSD slot for loading music/movies/pictures - LED screen is nice and bright, easy to read - Screen size seems to be a perfect compromise between 10.1 (iPad) and 6.0 (kindle fire) - Thin and light, easy to hold Cons: - Preloaded with Acer apps - Default is Acer launcher (You can download the Google Now launcher which improves the overall experience) - Screen is not very high resolution, but not bad either - Speaker is very weak (I use headphones most of the time) Overall, I have a hard time complaining about this tablet. I've been using it the last week to check email, read the news in the morning, and watch videos on YouTube.

Not bad for an entry level tablet.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ill get straight to the point. This tablet is pretty good if your are looking for a cheap tablet for kids or for a first tablet. Here's what's good about it: Fairly snappy for a $100 tablet with not much lag. Good battery life and the size seems to be just about perfect. Sound is surprisingly decent too. The SD card slot is a big plus to expand storage. The not so good: As with most android tablets this tablet comes with bloat ware apps that are pretty useless. The screen resolution is not great and is more noticeable if you are used to looking at a hi-res screen on your phone or other tablet. On board storage only gives you about 11 gigs of space, though there is an SD card slot. All in all for 100 bucks (or cheaper on sale) you cant really go wrong here. At this price range, I was pleased with this tablet,

Not an iPad Killer; Good Entry-Level Tablet
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Full disclosure: I’m a heavy Apple user. I carry an iPhone 6S+ and use an iPad Pro 9.7” daily to do my work. When I need a desktop, I use a MacBook Pro. Because I’m my family’s “tech support” guy, I always have to keep up with other technology anyway. Acer’s line of tablets seems directed squarely at the "cheaper" iPad competitor slot. For my money, I’d just as soon snag the iPad Mini 4 or Retina Mini for the weight, power, form factor, and battery life. But for an entry-level tablet, Acer’s Iconia One 8” tablet isn’t bad. The Acer Iconia One 8” tablet is similar in size, weight, and shape to a Kindle Fire. It’s not quite as thick and doesn’t have the same rubbery bumpers. The device is thicker and heavier than an iPad Mini and feels cheaper and more fragile; the plastic coating in particular cracks and creaks as you turn the device around in your hands. The outside shell is made of plastic; the glass screen extends end to end and connects directly to the plastic case itself. The case doesn’t match the color of the case on the top of the box (which is blue) although you’d probably want to put this in a case to protect it anyway. Turning the device from portrait to landscape mode in both hands, you end up smudging the back camera. There’s one speaker on the lower right corner of the back of the case (as you’re looking at it), which also means your hand will be partially obscuring the speaker when holding it in landscape mode. Oddly enough after starting the tablet up, after about 5 minutes of use, there was definitely a section of the back panel that was warm to the touch (probably processor or graphics chip). The expandable memory is nice, but considering you could probably keep everything in the cloud anyway, it’s not a huge boon, either. Speaking of the speaker, it’s not bad; it’s not going to be your primary sound system and you have to max out the tablet for it to even be loud enough with even a small amount of noise. A bluetooth speaker would definitely be required to fill anything larger than a dorm room. I’m not sure if it’s a common thing with Android devices, but when switching from landscape to portrait, the volume button’s volume up and volume down switched. The highlights screen (the “today” or wake-up screen is fine but that screen alone is listed in 24-hour format when everything else (and even the settings page) indicates 12-hour time format. Running Chrome to do some simple web browsing, the tablet easily got overwhelmed and froze up from time to time. I’m not sure if background processes were happening at the same time, but issues were intermittent. This was especially true on sites like YouTube and Vimeo when ads seemed to derail the process pretty easily. The camera is about what you’d expect on a $99 tablet; it’s not awesome but it’s not hideous. The 5mp back camera is nothing fancy, but it will get the job done. The 3mp front camera is not good enough to cut it for Skype unless you’re happy looking like an 80’s Bond Villain speaking from your secret hideaway. Surprisingly good: the voice recognition and transcription. OK Google was able to dictate emails and search very well - I haven’t yet experienced a typo; Siri has gone off the rails at least 3 times today, so in that aspect, something between the software and the mic is doing very nicely. Unboxing wasn’t nearly as pleasant as unboxing an iPad Mini; the device is contained within a protective baggy, secured in cardboard with most of the components housed underneath in their own little sections. The charging cord is RIDICULOUSLY SHORT and the power adapter pretty bulky. You’d better have a dedicated outlet on your counter to charge this thing with, otherwise you’ll be picking it up off the floor every 2 days or so. The battery life isn’t awesome; I’m guessing again there’s some bloatware eating the battery, but having freshly charged it and not touched it, it was down to about 70% after 12-15 hours of idle. The setup of the device was pretty standard, with Acer’s own proprietary software adding a few extra steps to setup. I’m sure Android power users are rolling their eyes about bloatware and all that, but the people I usually help aren’t power users, either. Bloatware or no, whatever the defaults are is what will be installed. The first update also seemed to load up on extra software; I wasn’t super pleased by all the extra junk that was installed by default (Chinese and Japanese character recognition keyboards, after geolocating me in Colorado and without a prompt? Come on.) Anyway, all in all, it’s a decent entry-level tablet if all you want to do is check email and surf the web. Google apps are, as usual, pretty solid on it (i.e.: you could probably write your term paper on this with Google Apps if you wanted to). I imagine with an expert helping you, this could be a decent college or small business tablet.

Fantastic tablet for kids to adults!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Upon opening the box I was very surprised how easy it was to set up this Acer tablet. If you have a Google account it's extremely simple and intuitive. You can choose to sync all your prior data from a past Google backup. If you enable develop settings and reduce all animations to 0.5 this tablet will run lightning fast! Pros: feels great in the hand with a grippy-like backing similar to the Galaxy Note 4. Fast, stable version of Android 5.1 Great for watching movies, reading books, browsing the web, etc. Lightweight and excellent battery life Cons: 1080p screen resolution Not running the latest version of Android (but not all that important). Highly recommend this affordable tablet for doing anything you would want to do on an iPad.

Great small tablet.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first android device. I usually use ipads and macs. So getting familiar with the settings and navigation was the hardest part. The tablet was very easy to set up. Since I already had a google account it made setting up the device super easy right out of the box. Kids love playing with it and have figured out how to navigate it as well. it is nice to have some added customization with your screens, which you cannot do on an ipad. The speaker is not very loud and the placement of the camera on the back is interesting. I almost always have my fingers over the lens whenever I am holding it. I don't like the camera placement, and the speaker is on the back so the sound is directed away from you. If you are holding it on your lap the sound can get muffled. Overall I am pleased with the device, we have figured out the navigation of Android pretty easily and for the most part it works just great.
