Customers are saying

Customers express satisfaction with the Predator Helios Neo 16's performance, graphics, and display quality, frequently praising its smooth high refresh rate screen and excellent value for the price. However, some users note that the battery life could be improved, and the laptop's size and weight may be a concern for portability. The cooling system also receives mixed reviews, with some reporting noticeable fan noise and heat generation during intensive use. While the keyboard is generally well-received, the large and heavy power adapter is a recurring point of criticism.

Just got it today and instead of playing around with it, i spent over 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft and Xbox because the computer didnt come with gaming services installed. Cant figure out why. So now im resetting the whole computer and reinstalling everything hoping it’ll work. If not, i’ll have to exchange it. What’s the point of spending $1,000 on a computer if i cant do what i got it for?

Great gaming laptop with sharp screen

This laptop is the complete package with a top tier Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics chipset. Upon first boot out the box to being in windows was roughly 15 minutes. Then a few updates and uninstalls of useless apps and ready to rock. Online speed is super fast when connected to my WiFi 6 network so downloading updates and games was quick and painless. Downloaded a few different games that I enjoy such as Battlefield 2042 and Star Wars Squadrons. Both those games ran smooth with no ghosting or glitching with the 165Hz screen and Nvidia GPU. Also ran a few tests with 3D Mark to push the laptop to its limits and see how well it performed. Overall put up some decent scores as you can see in the screenshots from a few different tests that I was able to run. This laptop has the hardware to run just about any game with high quality settings. Keyboard layout is nice and the Predator software and built in button allow you to quickly change the settings to boost performance and enhance cooling when gaming. One complaint which I have had with just about any gaming laptop is the battery life when not plugged in. At most I would say you will probably only get about 3 to 3 1/2 hours of gametime or watching movies even with the monitor brightness turned down and in eco mode. Also like the standard 10-Key number pad layout and the built in Predator button to quickly launch the Predator Sense application. This is no small laptop and you can feel the quality that this laptop offers and with that it isn't the most portable but it has all the power necessary to run the latest games on the go.

Great Gaming Computer That is Still Portable

This is a great gaming PC! The specs and price are great for a gaming PC. I know other reviews covered the tech specs, so I want to go over the user experience. I really like this computer as everything I use has been working great. A couple of things that would make second guess purchasing this computer, if I needed to travel a lot with it, if I was a college student, how much gaming will I do on a laptop. The reason I would be hesitant is due to the size of this computer. The computer is very thick, and the charging brick weighs as much as some laptops. So, all of this combined into a book bag makes it very heavy to lug around and use. I have a smaller laptop that covers 90% of my day-to-day needs, so I can leave this one at home when not needed. If size and ultra portability are not a concern, then this wouldn't be an issue. I 100% understand why this laptop is the size that it is and can get passed that since I have another laptop. The user experience is great! The keyboard is very easy to type on and even has a keypad. The keyboard is backlight and is very configurable to your needs. The W, A, S, D keys are in a different font and style. This makes it very easy to find those keys when gaming. The mouse pad is also easy to operate and is a pleasure to use. I didn't find myself needing to use an external mouse like I do with lots of laptops. The trackpad is very large and is slightly recessed into the computer. This makes it less likely to accidentally touch the mouse pad when gaming or typing. There is a predator sense button, which is a shortcut to the predator sense control panel. This control panel allows you to tweak power settings, cooling, keyboard color, etc. Also, on the top right of the keyboard (in the air vent) there is another button to change power settings from Quiet Eco, Balance, Performance, and Turbo (performance and turbo only work when plugged in). The apps that come preinstalled are minimal and are Acer branded to help keep your PC healthy. I have had other Acer computers and found that the Acer Care Center is nice of letting you know when you have updates and allows you to perform maintenance checkups. I know there are other ways to do this, but I like that it’s all in one app to keep your computer running correctly. The other software is your standard Microsoft apps, MS Office, Xbox, and some other generic items. These can be removed with ease if you do not wish to use them, but aside from that I didn’t find too much stuff that I didn't want to use. I have a cheaper gaming desktop PC and now this laptop. The laptop cost was a few hundred more than my desktop but is well worth the price. This laptop blows my desktop out of the water, and I can run games on heavy graphic settings. I played a few different games, and the quality was top notch and made it a joy to play! I did not experience any slowdowns or overheating issues while gaming. However, the fan understandably was running at max speed. This is totally normal, but this fan is very loud but is great at moving air to keep the system cool. I would wear headphones if gaming on this computer. The screen on this computer is probably the best I have every used. I was able to turn on an 8k video, and it felt like the objects were popping off the screen. I honestly felt like I was part of the video and not just watching it on a screen. This makes a huge difference when gaming, watching videos, or just general usage. The screen can also get very bright, almost too bright with a white background. The built in speakers are great for watching videos or playing games. They have a very high-quality sound and can get very loud. One of the best built in speakers I have used on a laptop. There are also lots of device inputs three USB ports, two USB C ports, HDMI, Headphone, MicroSD slot, ethernet jack, and a spot to place a lock. Lots of room to add stuff to this laptop due to how many inputs it has. I did use a USB C adapter to HDMI and was able to connect two external monitors to this computer without any issues. Lastly the battery life is fine for just regular use, when gaming the batter drains quickly! So, if you plan to play games, you should plan to have it plugged in. Lastly during startup, the Predator logo will display and then play a very loud startup sound. While it was cool the first few times it started to get annoying when I turn on my laptop in a quiet environment. If you have the same issue just google how to remove the startup sound (done in BIOS). Overall, I like the laptop and love gaming on this laptop. If this was going to be my only laptop that I had to take around with me, I would probably opt for something that is geared for that type of usage. If gaming is your priority and portability is second, then this laptop is totally for you.

A great laptop at a decent price, with caveats

This laptop is amazing value if you are okay with a few caveats. Pros: Large, bright 165hz display looks amazing. Full RGB Keyboard feels responsive. i7-13700HX and RTX 4060 perform well for just about anything you throw at it. Expect high-ultra quality for all but the most demanding games. Easily expandable storage. Even though most of the laptop is plastic aside from the lid, it doesn't feel cheap. Really feels like a quality product. Tons of connectivity options. 2x thunderbolt ports which can be used to charge the laptop for office use (NOT FOR GAMING). PredatorSense app is super useful for monitoring thermals and performance and customizing profiles for different uses. Lots of fan control. Can also easily customize keyboard lights from this app. The Cons: Heavy. This thing is a beast. Not a big deal for me, but maybe to others. The battery life is dismal. If you plan to use a laptop for any extended period on battery power, this is going to be a deal breaker. The 330w power brick is also a monster. This is offset by the fact that it can be used for office use with a small 100w charger through the thunderbolt ports on the back, but you still need access to a wall outlet. Speakers are not good. Thats the only way to put it. Fans are loud in performance mode. Don't even think about putting it in turbo mode. This laptop has no problem staying cool, but she's going to make her presence known. Thankfully, fans are silent in quiet and balanced mode. I got this laptop for Christmas on sale for $1100. At that price, this laptop is an absolute bargain. Just be mindful of the cons and be sure that your intentions with it will not be hampered by them.

    Hangs, lags, and crashes

I'm not sure if I received a faulty product but this was not a good buy, especially for the price. It routinely lags and crashes and at first it was bearable but it only got worse over time. I contacted support and updated everything (drivers, BIOS), completely reset the computer (which actually made the problem Worse). It's not overheating, it simply randomly decides to hang and stop working. It crashes just running firefox so I can't even try to play anything on it. I've found a bunch of people who have a similar issue but right now acer is refusing to give me a replacement unit. I've attached a picture of what it looks like when it crashes (i don't even get a blue screen or an error message).

6 months in to owning this, the nvme m.2 hard drive failed. "No Bootable Device" is all that displays now. No warning of imminent failure, just restarted the laptop and it happened. Of course for Best Buy to fix it under warranty, it will take over 2 weeks. They suggest I buy a new drive out of pocket and they'll install it for free. Can't get the data back though.

This is an excellent laptop. Beautiful display, quiet, could cooling, excellent fan control, nice keyboard, amazing performance. I'd say the 1440p display is not necessary, nor any better than the 1080p display, but I wanted the RTX 4060 versus the RTX 4050, so there you have it. Only downside is it's not terribly portable, but it's not really intended to be. The build quality is super solid, the screen is raised for a better viewing angle, and the chassis is designed for optimal cooling. Battery life is as expected - approximately 3.5 hours web surfing. If you're looking for a laptop that could last you for five+ years, you've found it!

You buy a gaming laptop primarily for gaming, and with that in mind, this laptop does a fantastic job. It’s a machine seemingly designed for this one goal in mind, sacrificing a few things along the way. GRAPHICS: The graphics card is very good, rivaling high-end desktop cards. You can pump games' graphics settings up to near-max. While it has only 8GB graphics memory, which nowadays isn't considered top-of-the-line, it’s still very respectable. You're probably going to run out of graphics memory before you see an appreciable drop in frame rate. CPU: Paired with that is a CPU that is massively parallel. Beyond gaming, heavily multithreaded apps like those for video editing and game development benefit. Compiling in Unity and Visual Studio are blazing fast. SCREEN: It’s large screen has a very high max brightness, good display quality, renders in-game scenes well. It can't dim quite as low as other laptop displays, which might hurt your eyes if you're trying to use this laptop to watch movies in a dark room, but at a high refresh rate, it looks great while gaming. PORTS & CONNECTIONS: The inclusion of a RJ-45 jack on the side is thoughtful. It really helps avoid saturating wifi during heavy bandwidth usage, though I wish it had the standard amber & green lights that other RJ-45 ports have. It also has an HDMI 2.1 port on the back, but I wish it had DisplayPort instead so that it could more easily plug in to my desktop monitors with better quality/throughput. VENTALATION: The machine has vents everywhere. Both sides, back, and bottom. You can definitely feel it pushing out heat when a game is running. I wouldn’t recommend gaming with this on your lap, though. The number of vents gives me confidence it's not going to overheat. Onboard GPU temp reaches approx. 75C when gaming. Now for a few caveats to be aware of… BATTERY & PORTABILITY: Battery life is not good. With such power-hungry internal components, battery life takes a beating. From my time with the machine, it seems you’d only get about 2 hours of use in non-gaming usage. Non-games can use integrated graphics to extend battery life a bit more. But honestly you're not buying this as a mobile device. It's heavy. It comes with a 300W+ power brick that is absolutely gigantic (see photos). It wants to be plugged in and it charges very quickly. I’d think of this as a LAN-party machine. Portable enough, but not ‘every day’ portable. Charging the battery through its USB-C ports does not seem to work as an alternative, so that brick and its bulky cables are coming with you. SPEAKERS: Speakers are very tinny. Obviously you're going to use a headset with this, but still. The onboard speaker quality makes the dts:x logo laughable. They are just bad - comparable to a cheap, entry-level laptop. This is a shame, since you’d expect to maybe use this as a multimedia laptop and stream video as an obvious secondary activity to gaming. CAMERA: The onboard camera is not Windows Hello-capable. You'll need to use a PIN to log in to the laptop. With a higher-end laptop, It would have been nice if it at least had a fingerprint sensor. — SUMMARY: For the included components, this is a very capable machine for the price. It’s clearly hyper focused on gaming, seemingly built with its singular goal of providing quality internal components and hitting certain specs at a price point. With that it succeeds, but as a result, it sacrifices on battery life, quality speakers and modern materials. It also omits some quality of life things by lacking a fingerprint sensor/login camera, or in its general lack of portability due to the massive (and necessary to bring along) power brick and bulky cables. Just know why you’re buying this, and as long as it’s for gaming / LAN parties, you've got a great machine.
