Good way to extend your home network

I haven't put this through the ringer yet, but I'm really enjoying what it's done for me so far. Seems to work great overall. I've had a few issues with the connections being finicky, but that could be related to the wiring in my home.

Great alternative if it works in your home

I bought this when looking for a solution to the problem of my bedroom xbox and net enabled blu-ray player being unable to connect to my linksys router through the floor (in spite of the short distance).
I was concerned about the fact that my bedroom outlet and office outlet are on different circuits in my home, but I took a chance. There seems to be some ongoing debate on this. I believe the bottom line is that these devices *can* work across different circuits in your home, but performance will most likely be affected to some degree. I believe this article confirms this: (4th paragraph)
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4695/handson-powerline-networking-how-well-or-not-are-latestgeneration-devices-working/3
In my particular case, I often get a red link light. The included documentation is very sparse and did not tell me what this meant. I had to look it up on the faq on their website here:
http://www.actiontec.com/products/faqs.php?pid=302#.Usb4cdJDvnE
FYI, the red link light indicates a "poor" or slow connection of less than 50mbs. This doesn't seem to really affect me. I still manage to stream HD movies and my xbox gameplay and live connection seem unaffected. I don't know what my speeds are, because I haven't run speed test from a laptop in there yet, but obviously they are high enough to stream HD, and that's good enough for my purposes.
Also of note is the fact that these devices will never give you the advertised theoretical speeds. Following is some fine print from the ActionTec Website here:
http://www.actiontec.com/302.html
"*Theoretical data throughput numbers are based on maximum, theoretical PHY throughput for HomePlug AV. Actual data throughput of up to 93.8 Mbps (TCP) seen in laboratory testing. The throughput will vary based on the condition and noise found on the power lines within the home as well as the type of Ethernet Adapter supported on each computer or other device. Interference from devices that emit electrical noise, such as vacuum cleaners and hair dryers, may adversely affect the performance of this product."
Setup could not possibly have been any easier. Plug these adapters into your outlets, plug your Ethernet into the adapters and it works (or not).
I hope someone finds this review helpful.

Just picked up this Powerline Ethernet Adapter today to try and solve a problem I had been having for a while. I had connected a Blu Ray player and an XBOX to a wireless bridge but for the past few months connection to bridge has been patchy / not so reliable / consistent. I had overlooked powerline adapters over the years in favor of 1/wired connections or 2/ wireless N connections. Anyway - installed this item in 4 minutes. Have everything working after 7 minutes. Speeds are great, no lag on games or streaming via the Blu Ray player (VUDU, Netflix etc). So far so good. yes it is only day 1 but so far so good.

Just bought this after making the mistake of buying a Linksys range extender (NO, NO, NO).... I am only into using it for the first day but the speeds are matching the home maximum capability, and even using another computer on the line (I bought the 4-port version), speedtest.net gave me two excellent numbers (27 megs down).
Skip those wifi range extenders and buy these products . Our high school actually had a test set that we'd loan to staff to try out. It really is a great product. And what's nice is you can buy add-on's...and just keep adding close-by ethernet to your devices.

Great option when you can't wire your house

We moved into a rental and were unable to wire our house like we used to have, but wanted to wire our smart devices for our tv, nowhere close to our modem and router. Easy installation and works excellent! Wouldn't even be able to tell they weren't wired directly to the router.

I had to move my internet modem to one of the rooms upstairs since directv won't share same oultet with comcast. i needed a device to provide wired internet to my ps3 and alarm system in the living room.
Powerline Ethernet Adapter and 4-Port Hub worked great!! my online gaming is perfect. and i was able also to connect my apple TV and Wii to it. This is a great Solution to prevent the up's and downs of a wireless signal
definitely will recommend the product

My wireless router is at one end of my 2 story house, my office is at the other end. I have a NetGear wireless booster that works great, but is fickle about when it works. I was looking for an easy way to get hard wired and came across the concept of these adapters using the powerlines. I was a little skeptical, but for $50, why not? This thing exceeded my expectations: very easy to set up, just plug it in. Having 4 ports is perfect for my home office with printer. It may not be as fast as a "real" gigabit router, but it is rock solid and always works. I average 60-70mbs download speeds.

I was skeptical about how internet signal travels through the outlets of the house, but it works amazing. This device is great if you want a steady connection instead of a wifi that's not as always steady

Great to have ethernet to multiple devices

I do not get good wi-fi on the room farthest from my router. This allowed me to not only have Ethernet to the room, but to also have multiple devices use the Ethernet. It works great and has good speed.

Great option for extending home network

I have a home network with cable internet and wireless ASUS router. It's on one side of a large family room and I have network capable equipment (blu-ray, receiver, TV) too far away for Ethernet cabling. I looked at wireless bridge/extenders to include those devices on the network, but reviews on all of them were mixed. I didn't want another computer frustration device. I picked this up at Best Buy and found reviews - including a CNET review- were positive. What a great solution to the networking issue. I plugged them in and plugged in the devices and now have everything on the network that I want. I'd recommend this solution for anyone and it's comparable in price to the 'best' wireless bridge/extenders without the reset problem potential.

Have a Smart Blue Ray player that had WiFi. Movie downloads were very slow if at all on WiFi.
This worked out of the box. Instructions were simple. All my movie downloads are fast.
No issues at all.

Now I can Skype from my office

I needed to be able to Skype from my computer which is at the other side of my apartment to my cable modem/wifi router. Skype over wireless is not ideal so a friend recommended an Ethernet-over-power adapter. The Actiontec PWR514K01 was on special at BesyBuy so I ran down to my local store and had it installed a few minutes later. I'm an IT guy and I have to admit I don't understand quite how it works, but, boy! it works. I now have less latency and better bandwidth generally on my home office PC and crystal clear voice calls using Skype.

Moved into new home and didn't want to run wires everywhere, and did not want to use wireless either. I have a sensitivity to wireless and cell networks, so this was a good solution, if it works. It does indeed work great. We have 3 rooms, including TV hooked up to these and they work great! So glad I tried I them. Just be sure that whatever rooms you connect these to, they are all on the same circuit as Router.

As it says, this is a true plug-and-play unit. Connected it to my cable modem with one enet cable, and then connected my computers to the four-port hub on the other side of my apartment. After some minor hiccups with getting the proper IP address, I was up and running no problems.
But just about an hour ago, I suddenly lost my connection. Network cable was unplugged. Looked at my unit, and all the lights were off, with only a very faint pulse happening in the enet lights. Let me say that tech support from Actiontec is horrible. Avoid at all costs.
I tried other outlets around the apartment. Some would produce a slightly brighter flicker in the lights, but the unit was not powering on. Only option is to replace it.
While it is possible I got a dud, I cannot recommend Actiotec in general.

Easiest way to network that I have found. Can even be used between buildings as long as they are both on the "same side of the same transformer"
