I originally purchased an AirThings Wave after noticing that my neighbor had installed a radon mitigation vent recently and was concerned about my own home. I researched online for a device that I could use at home and came across mostly meters intended for professional testing, but also with a professional price tag. Then I came across the AirThings Wave; it was comparatively affordable, looked like a smoke detector, and seemed relatively easy to install. Because AirThings also makes professional testing gear for radon, and with a history of company experience, I was convinced to try a single sensor in the basement and see how it performed and what my readings were. As stated in the instructions, there is a calibration period of a week, and then its recommended to watch the readings over at least a month. My numbers were 10x over the limit where installing of a mitigation system is recommended. I was impressed with the way the phone app was set up. The installation was easy. The device was accurate and very telling as the levels would change based on what was going on outside. If it was extremely windy outside, you could see how that affects the radon levels in the house. The same sensor will also track temperature and humidity. With the Wave working out so well, I investigated into their other products, and purchased the House Kit. The House Kit had a second Wave sensor in it that I installed on the main floor. This allows me to track the radon levels that make it up to the main living space through the HVAC system. There is another sensor called a Wave Mini in the kit, which tracks VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), temperature, and humidity. The Kit includes their Hub, which allows all my devices to connect together through the house and access over the internet back to my phone. The original Wave I purchased was readable on the phone app, but I had to be in Bluetooth range for it to update to my phone app. This was not a problem, but the Hub makes access easier, and puts each device on the same app. Installation of the Home Kit was easy, and adding the Wave I had already purchased in the basement was simply accepting the additional device on the app when I set up the others. With the Hub accepting up to 10 devices, I plan to add a couple more sensors and retire my existing humidity tracking setup that only had local displays, and no app that tracked history. The AirThings system also saved me the additional cost of an alarm on the radon system installed in the house in case the blower was to fail. If that happens, I will see a rise in the radon levels on the app, and can contact the installer to have it repaired.
