I love this computer! The fan gets pretty loud when running graphics-heavy games, but that doesn't bother me. The highest temperature recorded on the system so far has been 60 Celsius, so it does it's job. I did have to do an update on the Killer wireless adapter because of a consistent notification chime going off. Since then, this machine has been amazing! It's been running some pretty heavy games with absolutely no problem whatsoever.

Great gaming laptop for the price. Love the Tobii eye tracking and Retna recognition for signing in. This is by far a great laptop all around. From sound, graphics, memory, processor, etc. Only feature I found to have a bit of trouble with... is the Alienware fx lighting which sometimes goes out, but found a workaround on internet that addresses it. Other than that... this laptop has the best features for the best price.

Fantastic monitor and the computer worked great. I only gave it 4 stars because I ended up returning it to exchange it for a smaller 15" MSI laptop. The main reason I bought this 17" is for viewing pleasure, however the laptop was way too heavy to rest on my lap for extended periods of time. The other reason I returned the item was because it only had two USB slots and I needed 4+ to run the Oculus Rift system.

Buy ANYTHING but an ALIENWARE 17 R4 !
I'll try and give you the short version , but it's almost impossible to do...
Purchased brand new at Best Buy to the tune of almost $2,000.
Was told this would be perfect for video and music production because of the high performance specs.
Got it home and fired it up , it ran windows and dell updates , and after restarting the problems started.
Sound was glitchy , keyboard flickered , etc.
Wasn't going to take a chance on a $2,000 lemon so I immediately took it back and had them exchange it for a new one.
Everything seemed fine...
Until the third week when it just started randomly shutting off. I heard a pop , and then nothing. this went on for weeks until I found out that it had a faulty power input jack on back of PC.
Had to be replaced. 60 dollar part. and FIVE RIDICULOUS HOURS of tearing it down and replacing it.
Turns out you literally have to tear it apart piece by complicated piece down to bare motherboard to replace a simple power input jack.
Tech got it back together , went to fire it up , nothing but red flashing power light and audible beeps.
Found out that the LCD connector on the motherboard was improperly soldered allowing the corner to lift.
So $500 dollars later , after purchasing a new motherboard and processors , the processors which are the most expensive parts of the PC cannot be remove as they are surface mount or whatever term they use.
Tech got it back together and it worked ok for the next month. Then all of a sudden , no WIFI. Found out that the pins for the wifi card had literally fallen off the card board.
Another 50 bucks and wasted time.
Then things got even worse...
All of a sudden , the PC would start shutting down every two minutes for no reason. Would just do a normal shut down as if I told it to shut down.
Turns out that the new Windows 10 update isn't compatible with dell alienware laptop computers and that Dell and Microsoft were working to solve the issue , which they still haven't done by the way.
So with no other option , I had to go through a ridiculous shutdown walk around in the registry to keep this from happening.
It worked for another week , then it started shutting down again every two minutes.
After weeks of frustration and dead ends Microsoft recommended resetting it to all original settings.
So that's what I did.
Two minutes into the reset process the PC turned itself off.
Upon restart , NOTHING.
The computer sits there and flashes a blue power light ever five seconds with a totally black screen.
Turns out that while windows was resetting , alienware was also installing a bios update that it downloaded in the back ground.
And here is the best (or worst) part...
Because the PC shut itself down during a bios update , the PC that I spent $2,000 on not even a year earlier is now a paper weight because there is no way to reload the bias which now requires a brand new $500 motherboard .
So after I spend another $500 to replace the mother board and processors, I have the joy of knowing windows is going to automatically update windows ten because you can't turn off automatic updates.
Which in turn is going to cause the PC to shut down on its own every two minutes because they still haven't released an update or a patch to solve this issue which means even after I get back to turning on and working , I am still going to have headaches and I have to worry about trying to update it and wonder if it's going to turn into a brick again.
Please spend your hard earned money on another brand , you'll thank me later.

The Alienware 17.3 is a very powerful laptop but laptop may not be the right term. More of a lapfull. This thing is huge. Plan on buying a larger backpack if that's what you use for transport.
This makes a great desktop replacement. If needed, RAM and storage are both accessible for replacement with the removal of the bottom panel.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this computer.

I really like this machine. Responsive keys, nice display, will run anything I have thrown at it, and stays cool and quiet. Good desktop replacement. However this is a big machine, and it's heavy. You will need to purchase a Laptop bag for an 18" if planning on taking with you. I miss not having a cd/dvd drive. Overall I am happy with this purchase, a lot of bang for the $$$.

I'm a Computer Science student so I got this laptop to work on some assignments, coding, game design, and casual gaming. It can handle everything you can throw at it and is easy to upgrade components if you decide to later. However it is a 17 inch laptop. A THICK 17 inch laptop so keep that in mind if you are looking for something easily portable.

First let me start off by saying I am a dedicated gamer, and an avid technology lover. I have always played on consoles and my gaming desktop. I decided I wanted an upgrade and after looking around I had decided between a MSI and ASUS gaming laptop, then I stumbled upon this beauty. I read the reviews, watched some videos, and compared the specs and decided to go with this one. I purchased it yesterday and wanted to put it to a minor test before I wrote a review. The GTX 1070 is a beast. The first game I tried out was GTA V at Ultra settings and was averaging around 80-90 FPS, then I tried Overwatch on Epic settings and I averaged 100-130 FPS. You can hardly hear the fan. It barely seems to get hot. I love how you can customize all the colors on the machine. This is without a doubt one of the few purchases I've made in my life that I instantly fell in love with.

I am a gamer, I love to game. Alienware was always something to aspire to being able to own and was always out of my reach. But for the past couple years I have saved and saved and finally, was able to buy my dream laptop. Alienware!!! I can't even tell you how excited I was to take this laptop home and load up World of Warcraft. Imagine my dismay when I turned it on and the black screen was filled with light spots. (A computer friend said it is called light bleed) and it wasn't just a few light spots. It was all over the screen. So.. 2 weeks before Christmas when noone wants to be at the mall, I packed this back up and exchanged it in the store. This time I thought I was smart, I had the geek squad plug it in and check the screen because after it happened to me, I researched and found out this is a "known issue" in this particular Alienware laptop. Screen looked pristine. Great! I brought it home.
All seemed fine. I loaded up my games, set up the computer , got everything the way I like it.. .but wait... after all that, it turns out the escape key, 2 key and 6 key do not work!!! I did not notice right away as I guess I had no reason to hit those particular keys. After calling Dell customer service, I have an appt for dell to come out and fix the laptop keyboard.
In the meantime, a friend of mine ordered the same laptop, directly from Dell. His came with light bleed on the screen also, He sent is back to be fixed and they had it a month and a half!!!! He finally forced them to do an exchange (tired of waiting for his to be repaired ) the new one came with light bleed. They sent a tech to his home to fix it, and the tech came with the wrong parts.
THEN, my nephew for xmas got a alienware steam powered console. It shorted out by Christmas night.
What is up Alienware? You used to be the top of the line . I dreamed of owning one of your computers for years and now, your computers seem to just be badly made junk. I am beyond disappointed and it is impossible to get ahold of anyone from alienware who cares about the quality of their product.
So why the 3 stars. I have to say both Best buy and the TECHS (not the customer service) at alienware have been great. The laptop truly is beautiful and if I can ever get it in working order, I am sure I will enjoy it, however had I known then what I know now, I NEVER would have bought this laptop. I would never recommend that anyone else try given that the three people I know who have tried have all just bought junk.

I purchased this as my new primary gaming laptop for obvious reasons. Let me say it did not disappoint. From the first start up to the first game I played it has been amazing. Lag has gone out the window and graphics have never looked so good. I highly recommend this machine to any and all gamers.

This computer was a tough buy for me because I'm not a huge "gamer". But it has proven itself to be much, much more. The graphics are awesome and the speed is great. I'm glad I purchased this unit ... worth every cent. And Geek Squad is there to help when and if I run into any snags.

This laptop is truly a beast. I can do multiple things at once with no lag at all. Handles games very well. Only aspect I don't like is the lack of USB ports. There are only 2 ports on this enormous laptop. That is my only complaint. Everything else is perfect.

Perfect computer for software development and games. Desktop performance, great monitor, great video card, easily upgradable, doesn't get overly hot when running it hard. Weighs over 10 lbs though and more like 18 lbs in a case with power cord and backup drive.

I've had this laptop a month now and it's been amazing! I bought this to replace my aging gaming desktop and it blows my old computer out of the water. It is on the heavy side at about 10lbs but it's worth the extra effort. I can play all my games at ultra and easily get over 60fps. The build quality feels extremely solid and the fit and finish is wonderful. You can turn the led lights on and off so it can be a little more discreet. It boots up really fast and the facial recognition log on works great! I haven't had any problems with this computer yet and can see this lasting me years. What's great is it has the port for the graphics amplifier so in the future I can upgrade it. Overall I'm extremely happy with this computer. It's my first time owning an Alienware and I wish I hadn't waited so long. Happy gaming everyone!

This laptop is amazing I currently use his laptop for my business. It was well worth the investment I've used it so far for designing my own logos in Photoshop which loads instantly. I've used it for making my own webpage and all of the designs myself. I'm from any and all of the latest games at the highest setting as possible and it doesn't even phase it. even ran through the mark with all of the latest tests and the only one that had a slight hiccup was the 4K testing because the monitors not 4K. My only gripe about this computer and I wouldn't even consider it a gripe is the lack of a 4K display I was way too impatient to wait for the newer model which comes with the 4K display but this laptop is still worth the money if you need a good versitile graphical and processing powerhouse.
