This is a huge heavy laptop designed for use on a table not your lap. It comes loaded with some great specs to get good frame rates even at maxed out settings. Only weird thing I've noticed with it is that the mouse seems to stop responding briefly sometimes.

This machine is incredible. It can do anything a powerful desktop can do, and more. Its battery life is stellar, and I was actually able to work from the road, in the car, and get all of my work done! It's huge, yes. It's heavy, yes. But it's powerful and capable and amazing. If you're looking for something small, you're looking in the wrong places. If you're looking for a machine that can handle anything, this is the one. I am in the graphic design industry, not gaming, and I need computers that can run CS easily and without any issue. This machine with its 2 hard drives is fast and efficient, and handles Adobe Creative Suite (5) like a champ. I was a bit upset that I couldn't put Windows 7 on it, as I'm a Windows 7 junkie, but I installed VM Workstation on my 17R4 and then installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro, and voila. Happy as pie. The screen is also amazing. A lot of the newer screens give me killer headaches and eye strain, but this one has no PWM, which is one of the big contributing factors to painful eye strain and headaches. I was thrilled to find information on this, AND be able to get exactly what I wanted, literally without the headaches. I have an older Alienware from 2011 that still runs perfectly well, I was just ready for a new machine, and my husband has his ancient one that still holds its own. I plan to have these laptops for a LONG time. Totally worth it!

I got a great deal on this Alienware laptop and the processing and graphics card has performed great for gaming and programming, along with some photo processing. I did swap the HDD for an 1 TB, the m.2 hdd for a 512 gb Samsung Pro m.2 hdd for more space and performance. To other future buyers, the system has had several bios updates that I recommend running. (Otherwise it will randomly fail to turn on.) otherwise, the system performs great and what i need it to do.

Return to form for AW. The new R4 harkens back to the original AW machines prior to Dell's purchase. Runs well, quiet and powerful.

Coolest laptop I have ever seen. Love how you can change the ambient lighting. Laptop has a nice 1080p picture as well. My wife plays WOW and now she can turn on all the detail and its fast. Only knock is that it is heavy. I equate that to durable and well made and I won't be taking it to work everyday, it will be my home laptop. Key stroke feel is amazing and make this work desktop dell keyboard feel laboring so that will be all.

This thing is huge! It runs smooth after tweaking a bit - its heavy but that's because it's powerful and cooled properly. I took back the MSI stealth pro and exchanged it for this. The 1070 GPU screams - ran Watch Dogs 2 Full specs at 60fps - handles 4K video from my Phantom 4 with zero problems - editing is smooth and silky. The only bad thing I can say about this rig is that the tiny 128 GB SSD is a joke, my creative cloud software basically filled it up, that will be my first upgrade. Why these companies put these tiny SSD's in these monster rigs I'll never know. The other bad thing is the lack of USB ports - only 2 - really? It's got a USB-C port but a few more 3.0 ports would have been nice. Had to purchase a 4 port hub, no biggie but having a couple more onboard would've been nice. All in all I'm very pleased with this laptop, it rocks!

Audio driver has little trouble with some games but now it works well. Some if management tools are conflicting with each other. (Windows between alienware) Heavy and big fan noise but it's ok I think it's kind of desktop.:) I expected that it includes eye tracking but it includes only software but excepting the hardware. (Will be great if it shows well that laptop doesn't have eyetracking hardware) Still it's a great gaming machine!

This laptop was sold to us as a high-quality, state-of-the art laptop for gaming and we were told that the laptop could handle top-end games with ease and few to no complications. The fact of the matter is, it ran games to 60 fps, often times 100 fps, on nearly the highest settings and could handle intense gameplay without graphic lag... at the cost of constantly being above 90 degrees C. Even when the graphics were lowered to the lowest settings the issue with heating came into play once more,e often creating an issue where the keyboard would be too hot to use. We tried to move it to another, more ventilated location to no avail. Overall a nice, hardy computer that lasted 3 years for our family but not at all worth its price, you'd be better off building your own desktop, or simply scouting around for a better laptop.

Never thought I would be able to afford or have the need for a high-end laptop such as Alienware. When looking for a laptop for a family member, I was looking for the 'Q' Cpu i7 series, a true quad-core Cpu, not a toned down dual-core i7 laptop chip. Also, a pretty strong discrete video card. The lights on the laptop give it a nice look and can also be turned off. With the new Kaby lake Cpu's being released, the previous generation Skylake laptops were reduced, they are about equal in performance. I looked at the open box and was able to buy a $ 1,700 Alienware 17.3" screen for $1,100 open box. It looks absolutely new, no damage. Only had the laptop and power connector, nothing else, but nothing else is actually needed. The first year (it also includes a few months more) very good on-site warranty is included by Dell on all Alienware laptops, since they are more expensive than the usual laptops. Large HD screen, 16Gb ram, 128gb SSD + 1TB fast hard drive. I really like the keyboard. It's not the usual soft, rubber buttons that appear to be cheap. This one matches the keyboard on the Latitude models, and are very professional looking and easier to type with. I looked for the version with the 2550x.. and 120 refresh rate screen, but have read many negative reviews about it. Could not find a similar one open box that was in a good state. It's large, heavy - but will get the job done. Oh, it also has a GTX 1070 video card that is very strong for all types of programs. Thank you for a great deal.

Perfect gamer pc - i had a MSI and this blows it away! The 1070 nvidia card allows almost every game to be at the highest graphics settings. Only 1 con- it only has 2 usb ports - i had to get a usb hub to run my oculus rift .

Everything I was looking for in a laptop!

I've got my own custom built desktop with ~$5,500 worth of parts, including an octa-core processor, a custom loop, and other advanced peripherals. I've purchased a Surface Book i7 performance model (which is ridiculously expensive btw!) and was not the machine for me. I work as a programmer/consultant/engineer for the largest tech company in the world and I was unable to do 20-35% of my work-related tasks on that Microsoft Book. First, connecting to servers through RDP and other remote sessions (ESXi and Hyper-V guest VM Sessions) did not render properly on the 13" screen. There are workarounds, such as using manifest files that can be called on via registry settings, but still did not work as well as I wanted. Second, SQL queries and other resource intensive tasks did not scale well with the dual-core processor on the Surface Book. There were also some other issues that did not mesh well with work-related tasks, but I will not get into anymore crazy details. Just know that the Surface Book line of laptops are primarily focused on business and not so much engineering tasks. Now, to this amazing AlienWare 17.3X R3 i7 16GB RAM Nvidia GTX1070 8GB GDDR5 laptop with all the I/O and peripherals any REAL engineer or gamer would need. This laptop just amazes me at how much it mimics my desktop to the Nth degree. It's FAST, it's pretty, its' build is premium, and best yet, its PRICE is lower than any ultra book on the market. Actually, this laptop will EAT multiple ultrabooks for lunch at the same time. Is it big? YES! But, that's not necessarily a bad thing! Why? Because with computing AIRFLOW is almost as important than having high performance parts. For instance, the Dell XPS 15" was out of the question for me due to airflow and it overheating! Yes, the Dell XPS 15" is supposedly a premium laptop with a 1TB PCIe MX2.5 SSD and the best quad-core processor in an ultrabook, but that processor is USELESS due to poor airflow and its thermal dissipation. A processor meant for performance will heat up substantially, unless given the proper thermal dissipation through heatsinks and good airflow. This allows the processor to keep cool and maintain performance under heavy load. Well, the AlienWare 17.3X R3 meets performance with the proper engineering. The Dell XPS 15" has the performance, but NOT the engineering. It's like they took a Honda and threw in a Porsche motor with ALL Honda parts. It will have the performance (HP) of the Porsche, but will have the continuity and engineering of a Honda. The performance will degrade after long periods of usage, or will consistently have the issues that exist, today (driver failures, reboots, blue screens, etc etc). Bottom line, even if you don't game, this machine is meant for THOSE who are doing advanced engineering work. If you game, well, you have the extra benefit of being able to work and game from the same laptop. I opened up this laptop and this specific model includes a 128GB PCIe MX2.5 SSD with TWO ADDITIONAL SLOTS for MX2.5 SSD's! You can add a TON of additional storage! And the RAM is replaceable as well. I ripped out the 1TB 7200RPM volume and replaced it with a 1TB SSD. No issues whatsoever! Let's just say that you can upgrade and modify this monster to be faster than 85% of Desktop out there on the market. And it is a laptop to impress! I do not regret my decision to go this route. Yes, at 10LBS it will be heavy to carry around. But, I do know that I will get my work done wherever I go! And I get to game in the mix of things! I would HIGHLY recommend this model to anyone looking for the best laptop for a competitive price, works as an engineer or in any science field, and does not care about mobility.

I purchased this Alienware laptop by Dell because i wanted to stop using a laptop and a desktop this machine fit the bill as I am also in game design and do graphic work. The drive is set up a bit differently so it took a little time to get use to it. The main data drive is D not C. I've had no problems with the unit overheating as some have reported in previous versions. Runs fast, with fantastic graphic properties.

Super fast laptop great for gaming or IT computer repair Photoshop etc you name it this beast can handle it Would highly recommend getting one the only downside for me is the lights Alienware strived on the lights for the longest time that's what made this laptop so different another downside is no CPU upgrades or GPU upgrades it all integrated but it's still a great choice .

Not too bad for a mac user

As a committed mac user I was initially not too happy to have to buy a PC so I could use Oculus rift. Of course the learning curve from MacOS to Windows 10 took a bit of time but eventually fell into place-"sort of". The system handles Oculus rift well but I have a few concerns. The number of UBS3.0 ports is not enough to manage the Rift, two sensors and the wireless for the Xbox controller leaving one to have to convert the two USB type C ports into 3.0 using an adaptor not initially provided or recommended by the store when I purchased the lap top. There are times when the connections do not register and I must move things around to get the items to be recognized. Another problem I have had, likely due to my lack of experience with windows 10, is that the main drive seems to keep filling to capacity and I am repeatedly asked to change the windows installation and remove programs. This in spite of a rather large drive which could be used for programs if there were an intuitive way to set this parameter. Overall performance with VR games is quite good, far better than my initial purchase of an ASUS desktop PC. Given my purchase of the Rift, all supporting devices and the laptop all on the same day after returning the ASUS and my asking many questions I would have liked Best Buy to be more forthcoming in providing practical advice during the purchase. Nevertheless, it remains my favourite tech store.
