A novel (almost) comes to life

Author Neil Gaiman wrote the novel American Gods in 2001 and it’s still relevant today. At first skeptical, Gaiman’s involvement in the tv show made me think it would actually do the novel justice. And it does. The casting is some of the best I’ve ever seen. Each actor becomes their character and I found myself loving them on the small screen almost as much as I did in print. Ricky Whittle takes on the difficult task of portraying lead character Shadow Moon with a level of believability I didn’t expect to see. This is not a show for the faint of heart in my opinion. It’s violent and gory, filled with “adult” language and themes including sexuality. None of it feels gratuitous however and these occurrences only lift the series instead of bogging it down. This is one of those book adaptations that could’ve so easily gone horribly wrong. Luckily, it didn’t. You can feel Neil Gaiman’s influence throughout each episode and it’s brilliant. I’m excited to see what happens in season two.

"American Gods" is taking a slow burn approach to adapting its source material, covering about the first 100 pages from Neil Gaiman's novel. Or, at least, so I've been told by people who have read the book. Ian McShayne's performance as Mr. Wednesday is a highlight of the show. As well as the several visual asides that narrate how the various old gods of the world came to America. These vignettes are beautifully filmed and make me want to drink in all the detail on the printed page that the series isn't able to adapt

I started out reading this series in graphic novel form and when it was shown on tv I watched every night it played. I definitely waited to get it as soon as it was available on blu ray and Best Buy offered it at an amazing price. The video production is amazing and the special effects show up wonderfully. Love this show!

I've never gotten into Neil Gaiman's books before I heard about American Gods becoming a TV show, and I looked into what the book was about and was super intrigued. I ended up loving the book and became very excited for the show. I'm a huge fan of the TV adaptation and can't wait for Season 2. If you're a fan of mythologies and mystery - I highly recommend American Gods!

Interesting take on mythos of various Gods/Deities from various belief systems incorporated into the modern world, as well as the takeaway of the types of things that people seem to “worship” nowadays. Show is more style over anything else, which is almost like an in-joke on the latter part of previous sentence.

First season was great, primarily on the strength of the strange little asides introducing and covering all the weird things going on elsewhere in the world. Unless you were really blown away by the first season, it's probably safe to hold off on purchasing any of these until the series is complete.

I was absolutely beyond delight when I learned that one of my most all time favorite books was going to be adapted into a series! I suffered through the almost forgotten agony of waiting a full week between episodes when the show was released! It was as awful as we all remember those dark days. But the show was worth it. The adaptation between mediums, with a few plot points adjusted for improved continuity, came together really well. Warning! This is not a show for devout, religious, easily offended people. American Gods is for the rest of us who have questioned, "Did God make mankind AFTER we made you?"

AMERICAN GODS S1: never a dull moment!

American Gods season 1 is, truly, "must see TV!" Eager for season 2 to begin in mid-2018. The 'old gods walk among us' was a "Great!" idea for a novel, and STARZ has done an excellent job of bringing that novel into our homes. American Gods isn't for everyone -- there's quite a bit of VIOLENCE & nudity/$ex -- but it's a fun 'fairy tale' for ADULTS to enjoy after the children, if any, have been tucked into their beds.

This is a must-see for fans of Neil Gaiman, the book American Gods, and/or gorgeous sets and costumes. There IS a lot of nudity and violence, so it's probably not appropriate for young kids. However, for adults and older teens who like dark adventures involving mythological figures, it's a great show. If you're a fan of Game of Thrones. you will most likely like this too.

I’m just disappointed they don’t have it in 4K UHD. Dark humor, fantasy, action-packed adult show about gods on earth in the disguise of humans (but with more supernatural powers of course). Lots of action, interesting storylines & falls pretty much in line with Neil Gaiman’s novel. Great choice of actors & everything else. Cannot wait for season 2. Definitely recommend.

I was really into this strange weird tale, and it had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out what or who the gods really were, but at the last second, they tell the secret and it kinda killed the suspense and feel of the show, so I won't be buying the second season...only if they had kept the secret a few more seasons longer.

Just as my review summary states, it’s one of the greatest shows ever! Based off a phenomenal book of the same name, the series is true to the book while offering a unique experience making the story its own. Fair warning, the show is ONLY for a mature audience. But it’s one heck of a ride that is a must watch!

I was introduced to Neil Gaiman thru comic books. Picked this up on a whim while at BB and it didn't disappoint. It does jump around a bit but ultimately the storylines all converge. The first season is only 8 episodes and unfortunately, the second season doesn't seem to be due out until early to mid 2018.
