Doug Liman’s entertaining “American Made” tells the somewhat true story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot, who, during the 1980’s, was ‘coerced’ into flying spy missions for the CIA before becoming a drug smuggler for a Colombian drug cartel. Then, to avoid prison, he becomes an informant for the DEA, and winds up slipping further and further into a complex web of nefarious enterprises that makes it virtually impossible for him to get out of. Playing Seal with a flippant sarcasm, Tom Cruise displays the multi-leveled range of a superior character actor, but what really makes this film work is Liman’s tightrope-balancing act between outrageous humor and the serious, even dangerous, reality of Seal’s situation. In fact, the film brings to mind the best of Martin Scorsese’s work, e.g., “Goodfellas”, or, more precisely, Scorsese’s less accomplished “Wolf of Wall Street”. Particularly notable is the film’s digital photography that employs an exaggerated sun-drenched color saturation to the point of comic-book surrealism. Although taking liberty with the facts (Seal did not crash-land into a suburban neighborhood), this is a cinematic ride that ranks with the best action thrillers of recent years. And how it eventually leads into the Iran-Contra criminal escapades of the Reagan Administration in 1986 should provide an eye-opening history lesson to viewers who may not know much about that shady era in American history. (Interesting trivia: Cruise actually does his own flying in the film.) A first-rate entertainment, and Liman’s career best.

Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) pretty much lived large for a spell in the late Seventies through the early Eighties. He had pretty much everything which included wealth and the love of an extremely hot woman. His hand was in many pies some legal, some illegal, and some questionably legal. It wasn't so much the wealth, sex, and rock 'n' roll that Barry craved but the shear adrenaline rush of the chase. Many accomplices to his activities would include President Ronald Reagan, then Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton, to his no-account white trash brother-in-law. His inevitable downfall was a classic case of overreach. But what a thrill ride! Cruise plays Seal with equal parts brio and relish. He really seems engaged and having fun with this part and it shows. Best I've seen him in years. Doug Liman directs the film at a dizzying breakneck pace not unlike his previous collaboration with Cruise, "Edge of Tomorrow". Flick flew under my radar on initial release. Don't make the same mistake.

Thought that this movie was better than most people gave it credit for. The cinematography definitely takes you for a ride, making it a fun watch. However, I think they try to make the Barry Seal a bit too likable. Regardless of how much of a cowboy he may have been and whether he was blackmailed by the government as well the Cartel, he was still a smuggler. And apparently a prolific one. This movie is more lighthearted than I would expect the story to be. You don't feel the amount of weight he must of felt, considering his demise.

I already loved this movie but it sounds better now. The Atmos soundtrack sounds amazing. There are so many details that I can hear now that I didn't realize they were there. I felt like this movie was well written and well acted and cool that it's based on real events. I've seen it a couple of times and will surely watch it a few more times. Hence the reason for the purchase. This one really is worth paying a bit more for the 4k version though. Enjoy.

You will enjoy this movie t’s worth your time if u are a Tom cruise fan and even if u want to explore many facts related to the inception of drug trade on US soil. There is a recurring dialogue in the movie where Barry asks the viewers if America isn’t the greatest country in the world. American made makes me feel. Also funny dark comedy based on a true story from Carter-Reagan era.

A great film covering an aspect of the drug trade often overlooked, or rarely covered when it comes to the distribution of narcotics. Key players of which Cruise plays a role that without his aid, or expertise in aerodynamics the trade itself would have gone another route. In turn, creating a much slower progress as it concerns expansion on a global market.

Fun movie with a real life true story mixed in about an airplane pilot who is smuggling items for the US government when running drugs on the side for cartels... I truly enjoyed it and love the fact that the story is so unbelievable that it most assuredly happened. Tom Cruise is great...The movie is great...4.5 stars out of 5

Watch it! If you like Tom Cruise’s acting in the recent Mission Impossible movies, you’ll love this movie too, just like I did. It’s funny and cunning. At times It’ll leave you speechless... GET IT ON BLURAY OR 4k, the way I see it, it’s the BEST WAY TO TRULY ENJOY AND IMMERSE YOURSELF INTO THE ACTION!

So the movie feels a lot like “Blow” with Johnny Depp and is based on a true story. I really liked tom cruise playing the part and even know I though it was a bit long, it kept me interested and I enjoyed it. The 4K quality is awesome and you can’t beat the price. Definitely worth the watch and not a bad idea for the collection.

Great action movie based on the real life story from the 1970s. Tom Cruise is outstanding playing this hero, criminal, spy, informant (take your pick). The actions sequences are intense. The story is enhanced over what really was the main character's story but is still believable.

This is one of Tom Cruise's better performances in recent years. There's humor, action and a pretty interesting story all holding it together. This film wasn't a huge success in theaters but hopefully it will find another life on Blu-ray as it is one of Cruise's best films of late.

Bought it for the family movie night. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. I sure like the idea of being able to have the Altro desk and the Blu-ray disc in the same package. And the price was an exceptional value. I would’ve me recommend us place to shop to anyone who’s looking for a good value and quality videos

This takes a dank American tank and turns it into an all out riot to be part of. Talk about showing the 80's as the decade of excess. If this guy was anything like the character of the film, he would have been awesome to know. Love this film.

What happens when you take the director of such movies as the Bourne Identity and Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow and give him the ability to make his own version of Goodfellas? You pretty much gets American Made which is the true story of professional pilot Barry Seal and his adventures working for both the CIA and Pablo Escobar during the 1980s when America was heavily embedded In South America and its efforts to fight the war on drugs and the thwart the spread of communism. Barry seal is truly a fascinating character and director Doug Liman allows Tom Cruise to truly shine and give an electrifying performance. The movie is shot documentary style to make you feel like you were truly in the heat of the jungle or in the cockpit of a plane dodging bullets. This is definitely an edge of your seat thriller which has humor and heart and also once in a while makes you scratch your head as to how so much of our history has been swept under the rug in regards to South America. But don’t let the politics get in your way because this is a movie about Barry Seal and how he tried to get filthy rich by just being the best pilot in the sky and doing what he did best while also taking care of his family and hometown. Filmed in a gritty, hand-held, verite style the 4K image is absolutely amazing in how it pushes the colors to make you feel the sweltering heat of the jungles and the the saturated blues and greens of the Louisiana Gulf Coast as Barry flies drugs into the United States. The lossless sound is explosive and you can feel all the impact from bullets tearing into Barry’s plane to a Barry crash landing to dodge the coast guard. And the often humorous dialogue is crystal clear. Highly recommended for fans of historical thrillers and those who are Tom Cruise and Doug Liman fans.

I ordered this movie through Best Buy's website and by the time I got to the store, it was ready for me at customer service. You can't go wrong with 4K and a movie that unveils the dark history of nation, so definitely give it a watch!

This movie is very awesome, it’s a true story movie and when you know that this stories came from a country Nicaragua where you see some folks were trying to be in the business of making money the easy way . Selling drugs ahhh

Cruise is a great fit for this darkly comedic film that moves like a rocket and offers suspense, action, and laughs aplenty. Cruise seems to really bring it when Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is at the controls.

Wow this movie is so interesting. It had a bit of everything, action, drama and comedy. Its a movie anyone can enjoy and it never gets boring because it has so much going on. I loved it.

This movie was based on a true story and it really is a good watch. The story was solid and the action was good in many parts. We even got the standard running scene with Tom Cruise in it. Overall this was entertaining and I recommend it.

Amazing movie the wife and I really enjoyed it has some funny parts not like comedy movies but funny in everyday life and it has some action and drama loved this movie one of my favorites for sure
