Customers are saying

Customers express satisfaction with the Bolt Charger's Bluetooth connectivity and microphone quality, frequently praising its ease of use. However, negative feedback centers on the Google Assistant functionality, with comments citing slow response times and compatibility issues, particularly with iPhones and other non-Android devices. Some users also reported difficulties during the initial setup process. The overall experience appears mixed, with strong positive feedback on certain features offset by significant concerns about others.

First off, when it works, it's great. I use the aux option to my 2015 Civic that has abysmal Bluetooth. Then of course Bluetooth to my pixel3 phone. About 1 out of 5 times I get into my car, the roav shows 4 orange lights, meaning uh oh, can't find a connection.. the only way to get it working is to reset by holding the button on the roav for about 20 seconds, then Pai, connect and have to go through to wizard. It is soooo frustrating...

I've always used Google Assistant on my smartphones while driving, but it just didn't always pickup my voice properly and just had general overall issues. Guessing it was 75/25 work/no-work split. Current phone is Galaxy S10e and previous is OnePlus 5T. My truck has an aftermarket Sony media receiver and so I thought I would have to bypass that and just connect to the ROAV wireless and push the audio out via 3.5mm. That was wrong, it recognized my bluetooth headunit connected to my phone and then said it would route audio through the headunit. Paring was super simple just like any other device. Charging is great is it adds a second port and if you don't already have a bluetooth headunit it has the 3.5mm port to hook into your car. If you car doesn't have 3.5mm jack, this device maybe lost on your needs. It definitely works as a great charger, but Anker sells plenty of other devices cheaper without the assistant. Charging speed seems on par with my included charger with my s10e. Honestly I'm a poor review in this category after having been on OnePlus devices for the past two years nothing charges faster using their proprietary chargers, so I don't really expect much from a standard charger. It definitely doesn't seem too slow. Like other reviews you will find, this device is really just a Google Home for your car. So if that's what you are looking for in a car charger, it should suit your needs. I will mention the size, it should fit in most 12v sockets where ever they may be placed in the car. In my Mazda5 however, the 12v socket sits below the on dash gear shift and above the hand brake. While it does fit, it is a little big for that space.

This is a difficult review for me to write, as there are some aspects about the Anker Roav Bolt that I really like and others that are still buggy (and I don't know if that is the fault of the device or Google Assistant app, which is still in Beta as of this review, on IOS). Here's my setup... a 2015 Ford Fusion, an iPhone X with Google Assistant app installed, and the Anker Roav Bolt. What I like: the far field mics on the device seem to work great. Even with music on in the car, the device was able to detect "Hey Google"... with no issues. It also charges the phone, like it should. The Bolt can connect via Bluetooth or via Aux connection. My car only had Bluetooth, so I couldn't test the Aux connection, though the manufacturer says Aux is more responsive (faster). Bluetooth didn't seem too slow for me, but then again, I couldn't test with Aux to compare. When it worked, meaning the Google Assistant actually did what I asked the first time... "Tell me the News..." or "Tell me my messages", it was great. What I had challenges with... and this is not necessarily the Bolt's fault... the Google Assistant on IOS is still a bit buggy (in Beta). One example... I wanted to play a local radio station... the bolt understood correctly what I wanted, but Google Assistant kept telling me to install Radio.com app... which was already installed. Uninstalling and reinstalling the Radio.com or Google Assistant did not fix anything. I also had some challenges initially setting up the device on my iPhone X. I followed the directions, paired it with my phone, but had to do it multiple times before the Google Assistant recognized it. When it finally did, the Google Assistant couldn't connect to my car bluetooth, but it was already connected. It just wasn't detecting that. A full reboot of the phone fixed that eventually. My only other observation is, unsurprisingly, it locks you into the Google eco system a bit... which is great probably for Android users. I, however, subscribe to Amazon Music, and the Google Assistant doesn't work with it, so asking to play music on the Bolt can't launch Amazon music. And if I start to play Amazon Music through the App over bluetooth, when I then say "Hey Google", the music volume isn't lowered automatically (probably because it can't control the Amazon music app), and I can't hear what the Google Assistant says when I ask it to launch the next command. Overall, I rate this 3 stars, as the device itself is pretty good, but at least when paired with the Google Assistant through an iPhone, it's a bit frustrating. And it's difficult to separate the functionality of the device without the taking into account the digital assistant it's paired with, since the device would only be good to charge the phone... and that works well. Would I recommend this: I'd say not yet, but it has promise. And read the reviews. People who have Android phones may have a better experience. I'm going to continue using it since I really like the Google Assistant in general, more so than the others. It seems to be the most accurate and helpful, though not without some of the limitations I've discussed.
