Good charger, extra feature you might use
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'll just say this is a pretty nice charger. I used it on a long distance trip two ways and it did a great job of keeping the things we needed charged through the 10 hour trip each way. I'll start with the design. For some reason, from the pictures of it, I thought it was going to be quite large. I'm not sure why this is. But it's not. It's probably perfectly sized for what it is. I sticks out a little bit but, unless your lighter jack is in a really weird spot, I don't think you'll have problems using this. The exception would be if your lighter jack is recessed quite a bit in some sort of notch where you wouldn't have a lot of room on any side since the USBs plug in 90 degrees from your jack. But I don't think most people will have an issue. It looks pretty sleek and fancy, actually. I was surprised for whatever reason but pleasantly so. Setup was actually so much of a breeze, I did it in the car while the wife ran into McDonalds to get breakfast before our trip. It's as simple as downloading the app (you need to register for an account which is kind of annoying) and then just go through the few setup steps it presents to you. I recommend following along with the really short quick start guide that's included. The app found the charger right away and then it just asked me how I play audio to my car. I selected BlueTooth and that was it. I asked Alexa what time it was and her voice was heard over my speakers. There are options for other connection methods like audio cable which I assume would work just as well. Using it is pretty easy too. I think background audio is just piped through the speakers via the app so you can use your phone as normally as you do. I was able to listen to podcasts the entire drive while also being able to ask Alexa questions at the same time. Audio gets ducked anytime Alexa is triggered and for her response. I actually didn't link this Alexa to my normal Amazon account yet so I didn't test it but I know you can also ask her to play music for your and it should use your preferred music service as well. Everything seemed to "just work" out of the box which I was pretty surprised about. All in all, do I NEED Alexa in their car? Not really. Was it kind of neat when it was Sunday and I remembered the Bears had played earlier and I was able to ask Alexa what the score was on a couple of games without taking my eyes off the road? yes. I'm sure if you're the type of person that uses Alexa for playing music a lot, you'll get even more use out of this device. If you don't need Alexa, though, you can probably go for the much cheaper variant of this same charger that just doesn't have Alexa included. All depends on your budget and what you need.

Amazon Voice Recognition Comes to Cars
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Tl:dr: The Anker Roav Aviv works generally as expected with few quirks. Make sure you have a fast data connection. It works best if you’ve already bought into Amazon’s ecosystem such as Amazon music. The charger is relatively small and delivers on its promise.. Review: The Roav Aviv is a new generation of smart car charger. It’s roughly the same size as a standard 12V USB charger, but it offers a bit of a twist: Voice Recognition. If you’re car is more than 5 years old, you likely don’t have Android Auto or similar. This device connects easily through your choice of Bluetooth, an Aux cable, or even through the FM radio. Installation was a little tricky as there’s more than one Roav app in the Google Play store. Make sure to select the Roav Aviv app and not the Roav Charger app. This device won’t pair using the Charger app. Once you have the right app, the set up steps allow you to chose how to connect to your car. It’s also simple to switch device you use with the Aviv if you have multiple drivers. By default, the last phone connected will connect to the Aviv when it first turns on. Starting with the Alexa functions, it easily picks up the keyword for you to launch your favorite music from Amazon, news podcasts, and all your other Alexa favorites. You can also use it to request directions and it will open your favorite mapping app (configurable in the app). When the phone rings, the music will stop and you can even answer hands free! It will work with either Android or iOS devices. The Aviv relies on your device for connections back to the Amazon mothership. Data usage was moderate, akin to any other music streaming service. Response was on par with using an Alexa powered device at home. This can hear you well, even when the music is blasting, which is a significant step up from using the voice recognition functionality built into the Amazon music app on the phone. This also doesn’t require your phone’s screen to be on in order to operate the voice commands. Basic commands appeared to process locally while more complex (i.e. song & artist names) are sent out to the cloud. Amazon says that the majority of commands their devices process are for music, news, and timers. The Aviv handles all those requests as you would expect. It even lets you send announcements to your Echo devices at home (i.e. I just left work and I’ll be home soon). I was a little surprised by Anker’s decision to leave out USB-C Power Delivery and Quick Charge 3 from their charger. While they’ve packed a lot of functionality into the charger, I’ve seen these technologies on much cheaper chargers and would have expected at least one of these options for what this costs. 2 USB ports deliver 12W (2.4A x 5V) each vs the 18W you’d get with fast charging technologies. Conclusion: The Roav Aviv is a nice addition to older cars and allows you to use voice commands in a way that only the newest vehicles allow. Those who frequently access their phones or random songs or to get directions will find this particularly useful as their eyes can stay on the road. For the rest, this is no more than another Echo gadget to distract you.

Ok, but needs some work
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this for a coupe of weeks now and I really wanted to love it, but its just ok for my use. It's not the easiest charger to use and actually has alot of steps before you can get up and using the features. Its certainly not a plug and play. I had to download the Anker app, download Alexa, pair the phone to the Anker charger, etc etc. I also would have preferred to have at least one input be a USB-C, but i think they have other devices that include that input. You do have multiple options for use including, USB, Bluetooth, FM Transmitter and Aux cable. So this should work for pretty much any vehicle, old or newer. I havent really used Alexa, so i had to download the app, create an account and then use it with the Anker app. Ultimately, my plan for using this charger was to play my Audible books through it since im waiting on the dealer to replace the radio/navigation in my truck, but since the bluetooth is part of my problem, i could only connect this via FM transmitter. Not the best method of connection because you get interference as you drive to different areas where the stations change. I didnt notice any differences in charging while using my old charger via USB-A, but it is definitely slower using USB-C. All in all this is a decent charger with some good features. Im just used to doing everything through my truck's radio and not having to push the voice assistant button on the charger. Particularly since the charger sits in the center console of my truck its not exactly easy to push while driving. I would recommend this ideally for those without a hands-free setup currently in their vehicles and for those familiar with Alexa. If you have a system such as UConnect or Sync, you are probably better off passing on this.

Coolest car charger I've ever used
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was pretty skeptical about a car charger that cost $70. I thought there was no way this thing could be worth it. I was very wrong. If your car lacks Bluetooth audio or you'd like voice controls in your vehicle, this gadget is well worth the money. It is incredibly easy to use and let's you turn your car into a smart car. Setup: Super easy. Open the Roav app, connect your Amazon account and follow the steps to set your Roav up. It took me less than 5 minutes. There are a few options to connect the Roav. If your car already supports bluetooth, you can use the Roav for voice controls only and all the audio and calls will flow through the car like normal. If your car doesn't support Bluetooth or you don't like it, you can connect an Aux cable to the Roav or connect the Roav via FM radio. This let's you connect your phone to the Roqv via Bluetooth and then the Roav will pass all audio and calls through the car speakers. Use: I've found a lot of use in the Bluetooth functionality since my car didn't support Bluetooth off the lot. It works perfectly for playing music and taking calls. I don't get a phone lot of use from Alexa, mostly because I don't find Alexa very useful. You can use it to call people with voice commands which is nice. Other than that, you can start Sporify or Audible or things like that which is convenient. Cons: The only problems I've found is in my car the Roav doesn't turn off when my car is off so it will randomly connect via Bluetooth at my house while the car is in the garage. I'm not sure if this is the Roav's fault or my car not turning off the car charger port. The only other problem I noticed was an audio skip on a trip that required me to pause the audio and restart to fix the problem. Overall, I'm pleased with this product and will definitely get a lot of use out of it.

Not ready for the big leagues
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted to love this charger because I usually love Anker products. As a charging unit it is decent enough where the problems start to creep up is with Alexa functionality and Iphones with my Carplay. I have had several issues with pairing the bluetooth with the app and its super frustrating to have to manually redo it more than once when it unpairs. Basic Alexa commands work, but you have to keep the Audio low in your car for it to pickup your commands which kind of defeats the purpose. The basic commands work, but talk to text and navigation I've had major issues with to the point where they don't even work right. Unless they can do some updates to the app itself paired with Alexa I don't see myself using the Alexa functions too much. The unit itself is fairly bulky and the only way it would fit in my car was turning sideways which imo just doesn't look good. I would say there are probably some better options out there than this charger.

Alexa is my everywhere friend
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We got this just in time for a family vacation where we would be traveling around 10 hours each way. What a difference it made in our trip. It was very easy to add Roav-Viva to our Alexa apps so no matter who was in the car, at least one phone was able to connect through bluetooth. We had a choice of plugging our Garmin into the device or getting Google Maps through it. The second port is easily used if someone needs to charge a phone. Phones were now hands free and favorite playlists were easily accessed, no changing CDs or finding where on the phone that partiular song is, Alexa got it for us easily. We have Alexa in our home, my boss has it in our office and now I also have Alexa in the car so I can access her everywhere now. We will be getting another for our other car and I know this will be a favorite gift to give friends and family this year.

Great Charger, Bad Everything Else
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I love Anker products, in fact I have a few Anker USB chargers in the car/truck already. Give me a great Anker charger with Alexa integration! Sign me up! However after using the Roav for a bit, I have to say that it was more frustrating than fun/useful. Now my truck already has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, so this would have been overkill, but I love our Alexa devices in the home (we have 5) so I thought why not get one for the car too. The charger is nice, very sturdy build, albeit all light plastic, and the size is a little larger than other dual USB chargers, but overall not too bad. I’ll start by saying that the USB charging ports seemed to charge really fast, as I would expect from Anker. My other Anker chargers are fast charge capable, and this one seemed to be right on par with the others, it charged my iPhone XS Max and GoPro super fast, even though I hadn’t readily seen what the amperage output was from this Roav. So as a USB charger, this thing is awesome. The Alexa integration was frustrating to say the least. It took forever to connect and setup. They do try and warn you that connect to it before your device connects to your car, and it’s true. If you don’t manually disconnect your device from your existing pairing with your vehicle, this Roav will never connect. After unpairing my device from my truck, I eventually was able to connect to the Roav, although it still took a long time. Then you have to connect the Roav in your Alexa app. That was much easier. Once connected, it handled the usual “Hey Alexa” questions just fine, just like the home units, however getting it to operate in a way that was useful in the car was lacking. It’s not integrated with any music service except for Amazon’s own Prime music and Sirius XM radio if you have a subscription. Apple Music, Google Music, Spotfiy etc. weren’t happening. Same with navigation. I could only get the Alexa to work with Waze, nothing else would open. And if you don’t use Waze, asking the Alexa Roav anything related to where you are, navigation, points of interest etc. is worthless. Then, almost randomly, the Roav would disconnect from my device and I’d have to reconnect all over again. When using it, it seemed to hear me ok, but you have to be on your Media or Bluetooth input all the time for it to work, and it didn’t lower the volume of whatever was playing when asking it a question or getting a reply. Since I already have CarPlay integration in my vehicle, I’m going to stick with that, since I can ask Siri anything I can ask Alexa, and CarPlay works perfectly. I think this Alexa Roav would be ok to use in a vehicle with no other integration, so that it’s not competing for usefulness. I think this will be fine in the wife’s vehicle, to take on trips as a charger first, and have fun (maybe) with Alexa a distant 2nd.

Alexa, get to work!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Let me start off by saying that this is a tiny little gadget that has a great pleasant look. It can charge two phones at the same time and has Alexa built in. With that being said, it may or may not meet your needs because it still has some issues that make it useless at times, because it's hard to get it to work, mainly because you are using it while driving when you want to concentrate on your driving and not on getting this device to work. Let's start from the packaging. It comes in a box along with the users manual. First thing first, you need to download Roav VIVA app. Once done, plug in the device in your car and connect to the car's Bluetooth via the app and NOT via your phone's settings. Atleast that's what the manual says. The app itself has some shortcomings which I assume can be fixed in future firmware updates. Pros: Two charging ports Support for Pandora, Sirius XM, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music (no Spotify just yet) Hands free calling Use with Google maps or Waze Cons: Unable to hear your voice most of the time, specially when music is a bit loud Bluetooth audio lag (fairly common in Bluetooth world) App needs to be running in the background all the time for the device to work Car stereo must remain on the Bluetooth mode for you to hear Alexa Given it's shape, placement of VIVA in the car may be a problem in some cars As of now, I'm just using it as a phone charger because my 2013 Honda Accord only has 1 USB port which I use to listen to music through my USB stick. That means I cannot charge my phone in the car without removing the USB stick. Installing this Roav VIVA has atleast solved this problem. Hopefully, the issues are fixed in future and this device gains more positive reviews which it deserves but for now, this device is just an ordinary charger for me and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless the price really drops down.
