1st Mac and I Like it A lot...but NOT Love

I have been a PC user for 14 years, and a Linux user for two. I have used Macs at work (educator) but not enough to be motivated to buy one for myself. I was motivated to buy an iMac thanks to the Jobs biography. I love most things about my iMac. I am still getting used to the OS, but it has many similarities to Ubuntu so the learning curve has not been steep. I like that apps usually load quickly. I had an issue with slow loading programs when I first brought the iMac home, but it seems to be running a lot better since that first week. I love the Apple ecosystem. I had already been using iTunes, and my wife has had an iPod of some sort the past 5 years, so I am familiar with the user friendliness of Apple products. I set up my iCal, downloaded my iTunes purchases, and became familiar with traditional mac apps rather quickly. My biggest dislikes with the iMac is the cost...maybe it is my knowledge that a PC with the same specs cost A LOT less, and if I run Linux, it will run just as fast as a Mac does. That being said, I have to admit that as long as my iMac last as long as my PCs do (5-7 years), I will consider my money well spent. For people afraid to leave PCs, know that there are plenty of similar programs that run on Macs that you will enjoy using. I video and photo edit, create my own home video DVDs, and backup my data. I can't use some of the PC programs on my iMac, but I have found suitable replacements that either came with my iMac or that where available from the App Store... but I do miss some of my Windows programs. Oh, and the screen is beautiful...I find myself still amazed at how clear and crisp everything looks. My PC has an 1080p hdmi/dvi monitor but my iMac screen blows that monitor away!

    Great Purchase

I bought this computer 3 weeks ago, and haven't looked back. The screen is very nice, wireless keyboard is sleek. I bought the track pad as a optional mouse which I like a whole lot better than the factory mouse which was included. I recently purchased additional RAM (8gb), so I'll have 12 gbs total, which will make this computer handle more. Overall, great computer, and bought Apple care just in case.

For the impatient loaded with cash

My parents were in need of a new computer and I have a Macbook Pro so I decided to buy them a new iMac so we could do things like Facetime while I am away from home. So far it works great, it looks clean, stylish, and has only one cable, for power. A bit of a learning curve for first time users, but the more you get used to it, the easier it grows on you. Just a tip for women, lay off the hand lotion while using it. I think it affects the touch capabilities of the mouse, makes it less sensitive. The biggest gripe I have for it is the money you will spend on everything compared to a regular windows computer. You will be nickle and dime'd everywhere from little apps that you need to control the computer(that come standard on windows) to the yearly "updates" that charge $30. Apple is not a brand for a person who cannot just throw money away.

Want a computer that actually works, Get an IMac!

I have had my IMac for just over three years now. Switching over from a PC to my Mac has been the best investment I have made in a long time. Everything you have ever heard about mac performance being better than a PC is absolutely true. There is a small learning curve to get used to it, took me about two weeks. But soon enough you start seeing things working they way they were meant to work on a computer. If you want reliability and performance and a computer that is ready to work when you are, and you don't have to spend a couple hours fixing something that all the sudden just stop working, then buy an IMac! Based on my prior PC ownership, I estimate that I have saved Hundreds of dollars and countless hours of my time not having to fix something that just miraculously was working yesterday and stop working today! If you can afford it, Get It.

    Love everything about the Mac

I been wanting a I-Mac for so long and I finally got my own now. Even though its expensive, its worth it to me cause everything on the I-Mac works great the way a computer should run every day. I use to have to wait 5-10 minutes for the computer to finally let me do anything once it got to the desktop part, with I-Mac I only have to wait seconds to get through entering my password and I'm already at the desktop ready to do anything . I like how everything is wireless makes life easier and less cords or cables to deal with. I also like how the magic mouse is wireless and using the finger tricks on the mouse makes everything else easy to use when I'm surfing the internet, don't have to click and drag to scroll etc. Overall I love my I-Mac and it does the job way better than any window computers can't do, I have a ton of music on my I-Mac and it still runs fast and smooth and I can play my sims 3 game and it doesn't lag.

This is my first Mac. I have been a windows user for 20 years now and thought I would never switch. After using a few Apple products over the years i.e. iPhones and iPads I thought since it was time for a new computer to give the Mac a try. I tried out a few at the Apple stores and Best Buy and they were a pleasure to use. Apple really does have the finest craftsmanship and quality around. The mac looks and feels great. Screen is excellent very nice crisp picture. Setup was a breeze only took a few moments really. Out of the box you are off and running . The wireless keyboard and mouse are also excellent quality and work extremely well. I highley recommend this to anyone in need of a new computer you wont regret it. Go try one out for yourself.

    Apple 21.5" iMac

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Value for Price/Features: Many of my friends are a bit harsh on the price for the Apple computers. What most don't realize is just what comes with the Mac. Obviously there are cheaper solutions on the PC and software can be bought separately, but it is having everything included as well as it all working together makes it that much more intuitive. iMovie, iPhoto (Aperture), iTunes & Garageband can communicate back and forth. Sharing files with an ease (You can even drag and drop content from one application to the other without "importing."). The OS is rock solid, responsive and very clean. I dual-boot with Windows 7, but don't find myself on the Windows 7 unless I am gaming. iCloud is just icing on the cake with the integration with your Apple mobile devices. Keeping contacts, notes, emails and more in sync without connecting to the computer. Just an easy OS setup. Performance: Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM (upgraded to 8GB), 500GB of HDD. These may not be the top of the line in performance, but what is nice about OS X is that it takes full advantage of the components. Because Apple has developed the Software and paired it with specific hardware make for a better overall performance. With windows, you are dealing with one OS that can work with literally hundreds of thousands of devices. Reliability: When I hit the power button, I am on and working in Safari, iTunes, Aperture, etc. within 20 seconds. Most often I am put right back where I left off because of how the OS keeps your open windows saved. Sure, there are viruses out there for the Mac, but if you are smart with what you do online, they are almost always avoidable. That and a little knowledge about how to use Google. Overall I would recommend this product to anyone who would listen. The 27" screen is amazing. It quite literally is the best PC you can buy. The Windows installation works better than a Gaming PC I built a couple of years ago. The video processor is higher end than in most all-in-ones, which allows for gaming. What's not to love? Besides the Apple logo for you Apple haters.

Best Computer I have Ever Owned

This iMac is the best computer I've ever owned. It is fast, user friendly, super intelligent, and not to mention - incredibly good looking. I love how easily it connects with my Macbook to share files seamlessly. The migration of files from one of my PC's was so easy. These computers are no longer just for computer programmers - they're made so that the average joe can easily navigate their way around them. It's really amazing what you can do with one of these. I definitely recommend making the commitment.

    Nothing beats a Mac

I waivered between a Mac Mini and an iMac for my primary home computer. Ultimately it was worth getting the iMac for the increased computing, the better video capabilities, and the amazing screen. I lusted for the 27", but reason (my desk size would have the 27" in my lap) and financial reality dictated that I go for the least expensive of the options. Even still, the system is incredible. The quad core i5 process eats through tasks - for example, converting an entire movie from avi to m4v using handbrake can be done in ~10-13 minutes. Applications like iMovie snap and respond to your commands with ease. The default 4GB of RAM is plenty for most all uses, but will definitely be seeing an upgrade in the next 12 months or so, if only on principle. The 500GB hard drive is adequate for use, but for storage, I recommend an external hard drive. Yes, USB 2.0 is still in use (unless you wait / pay for thunderbolt drives) but, honestly, it's plenty fast enough for my uses (streaming video across the house to multiple devices, storing copious amounts of data, saving processed files, etc.) In fact I've ran 2x USB hard drives at once and it's just fine. Time Machine is highly recommended for backups - by far the most transparent backup system ever created. The video has exceeded expectations. My largest motivation/justification for the 27" version was not necessarily the screen, or the processor, or the hard drive, but the video card upgrade. I can now safely say those fears have been put to rest. The video card is more than adequate for the task of gaming. Portal 2, WoW, Starcraft 2, all run at high settings flawlessly. I haven't tried any Windows games yet, but I expect that they'll perform well. That being said, expect the video card to probably start struggling with games coming out in 2012/2013 and beyond, so if you're an avid gamer who keeps up with the latest games, then yes, I'd say go with the higher model. But if you're like me, a once-avid gamer that has become a more casual gamer, then you'll be ok with turning off AA and putting textures on medium... in a couple of years. For now, it's not necessary. The built-in speakers are AMAZINGLY rich in sound. I was not expecting the built-ins to sound as good as they do. OSX is, of course, still the best OS you can experience, hands down. I work in IT, and make a living on Windows, but OSX is the smoothest, easiest, most fantastic OS ever created. It's what Windows could possibly be if they'd drop the registry format and create a *nix version. That being said, Lion has been a little bit of a bumpy upgrade for me. I did get my free upgrade since my purchase fell within the "free upgrade" window, and I did apply it on day one because I'm an early adopter, but since doing so I've experienced a few inconsistencies... I think it has more to do with 3rd party applications not being optimized for the new OS, than it does the OS itself, but even still, there's been a couple of "finder lockup" hiccups that are just odd. Overall, though, I still recommend it. My biggest gripe is not getting the option to get a track pad instead of the magic mouse. I tried, tried, tried to like the Magic Mouse, but 1 week later and it found a new home. As a previous MacBook Pro user, however, along with the recent additions to gestures etc., I'd love to get in on the OSX experience with the track pad. Unfortunately, that means an additional purchase, one that I can't justify right now. I did, however, appreciate the discounted price, along with the Reward Zone points received for such a large purchase. All in all, I made up for the extra purchase necessary by selling the mouse and with the reward points, so I guess it's a push. If you're a Windows person looking to migrate, I highly recommend this system. You can still run Windows on it (I have bootcamp installed, I just never use it) but I can promise you, as a recent (18 months ago) convert to the Mac world, once you start using OSX and allow yourself to use it exclusively, you'll find yourself groaning at the thought of booting into Windows. Windows 7 is great, but OSX is better.

    The iMac you'll love

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As an entry-level iMac, this is a LOT more than meets the eye. I've found it very capable in running OS X applications, and when adding the Parallels Desktop 6.0, let me use what few Windows applications I still wanted to run without error. (Note: I have not used Parallels for high-performance gaming, but Boot Camp, included with OS X, is perfect for that.) Network connectivity and speed has been a marked improvement over the Windows system I used to use, which is a worse-spec Windows 7 (but virus/trojan free) computer I had previously. I've found OS X to be a very "flat" learning curve coming from being a Windows user, and feel actually very comfortable and actually happier using a Mac. Something about the computer is cheerful, meant to be a little more brilliant, playful, colorful, and creative - so using it seems like having a toy more than a business machine, which Windows always seemed to be. Yet nowhere in its use has the iMac seemed to be a toy in its power, included features, capabilities, or functionality. I've not had a frustrated moment where I said, "Well, Windows let me-." rather, I'm starting to find times wishing I had a dashboard on Windows, an application dock (that works as it does in OS X), the simple App store - or the simple drag-to-trash uninstall procedure for applications. OS X makes a great alternative OS and one quite easy to get along with, even if you've been a Windows user as long as I have. I actually think you may like to avail yourself of the free and/or low cost ways of moving data from your PC to your new iMac using the Geek Squad. There's but one program that exists for PC to Mac direct transfer, and it's complex and $40 or so. Most PC storage media (CDs, DVDs, thumb drives, SD memory cards) will read directly on an iMac, no special software needed. This includes word documents, spreadsheets, etc. I do not perform complex word processing, so found the included software on the iMac adequate for my home use. The iMac is also a media center for organizing and editing photos, videos, creating DVDs, managing personal contacts, appointments, PDF documents. I was especially impressed with their App store which can provide free software you can download via the Internet (using your Apple ID, created for free when you register your computer). This same ID is used with iTunes to purchase and download music, as well as apps, if you own an iPod or iPad (I have the latter, which naturally integrated beautifully with the iMac). The App Store also offers free upgrades to software you've bought, and will be the way the upcoming OS X Lion is offered as an upgrade this July 2011 for $30. I remember my Windows7 upgrade price over $100 when it came out... I can't imagine going back to the clutter of wires between monitor, tower, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and power cords that was my old PC "Mr Octopus." the iMac is a single power outlet. all other peripherals I mentioned are cordless and battery-operated (I use rechargeables). There's still a few USB cords left, but that's a constant for now. I really like having desk space I can actually use and under-desk space I am not constantly getting my feet entangled into cords with. I imagine this is saving me electricity costs as well, but the real savings I think is in blood pressure. The iMac seems to be a very good blood pressure medication for this over-50-year-old user.

I love this computer! I will never own a pc again. Not only is it sleek and clean looking, but it works great! Easy install and all the programs are included, (did have to by the Office for Mac). It took only a couple hours to transition from using a pc to Mac. The best investment I have made and will be a loyal Mac user from now on!

This is my first Apple computer. I have dropped the PC life and joined the iMac community. I plan on adding Apple products to my home in the future. This iMac is flawless. Everything works on demand, no crashing, no slow-poking, just an all around great product. My iPhone loves it and I will be purchasing an iPad in the future. Great product for the price, of course, the price can always be less to help everyone out. Apple technical support is great as well. A little different to get into the Mac OS coming from windows 7 but the transition wasn't bad at all. Still getting my feet wet. Overall, a great product, highly recommended.

Purchased this for home use for the family. We have always used Windows before other than we recently purchased iPads and iPhones. I was hesitant to purchase this as a full time computer but we have been extremely pleased with it. It is pricey compared to it's Windows counterparts but after researching all options we decided it was worth it. The set up took less than 5 minutes from the time I opened the box. We have been using it for almost 2 months and have had no problems. If you have the extra money then I would definitely recommend it. Also I highly recommend the Apple pad instead of the mouse in the box. It takes some getting use to but well worth the extra $50.

For being a base Imac is a great deal. The cost may run high but i think is a great investment instead of buying a window base computer. why? because Imac is safe, clean, sleek, and No virus like the windows. if you buy a window base computer within a 2 years your computer will be acting up as for MAC it will last you 100x longer. That's all i have to say. GO FOR IT!!!

From the moment it came out of the box till now this machine continues to amaze me. I bought this machine on Black Friday, This is my first Mac. All I had to do was take it out of the box and plug it in. I already had an iTunes account , once I put my E-Mail address into the computer it set itself up in about 3 minutes. I was on my way to doing what I wanted to not setting up a computer. It has taken me a little while to get used to Mac OS but the more I dive into it, the more i find that it operates exactly how i feel a computer should operate. Very user friendly, well worth the money. The key board is very light weight and stylish. I am still learning all the features of the magic mousse but what I have learned put a mac mouse light years a head of PC. I wish I had gone to a Mac before now what an easy machine to use and set up.
