First time using and buying AirPods; they were intuitive to use and transformed my listing experience

I use these at work in a kitchen and I got them because I know the airpod 1's fit in my tiny ears well. I'm just not a fan of these. I only use one earbud at a time while at work. And it only lasts 6 hours, which is the same length as the airpod 1's when they were new. (Another brand I used lasted 8 hours for a quarter of the price, but they had different issues) The noise cancelling doesn't work for one earbud, not an problem as I don't need it, however despite the noise cancelling being off I still can't hear my surroundings while listening to music. I've fiddled with the settings and tested the transparency, but it seems there is no mid ground. You either hear the music and don't hear your surroundings, or you can hear your surroundings but can't hear any music.
Also, I've only had this issue with apple headphones, but the volume if you use apple music isn't leveled. Some songs are way quieter than others. I assumed this was an apple music problem, but I didn't have this issue with a different headphone brand. Maybe that other brand had built in leveling? All I know is that it's very inconvenient to be constantly adjusting the volume when you wear gloves for work.
Speaking of audio, I'm not quite sure which part of a song it is, but the mids are quiet. I think? All I know is that I cannot hear the "La-doo-da-da" part of Young Volcanoes by Fall Out Boy... and that's my favorite bit so it's kind of sad.
This version doesn't have the tap controls but has buttons in the stem part. This is mildly inconvenient because of the gloves, but I'd argue it's less annoying than when I had to use my shoulder to adjust the other brand's earbud and it would pause or change songs because of the tap controls. So that issue could be based on preference.
I haven't tested the noise cancelling. I honestly don't know why I splurged on the noise cancelling. I guess I thought I might go on an airplane or something.

They are for sure an amazing upgrade. Very useful and the noise cancellation is top notch. The feature I like the most would definitely be the motion sensor. So if you’re getting a call but can’t speak, shaking your head yes will answer the phone for you.
