Amazing with Apple TV. Anyone can enjoy it at any age. I've fallen in love with the slo-mo video function. Slowly coming around on ios7 as well. We have two now and they are amazing.

Great starter iPad for my Mom

The challenge will be how long it will take her to feel comfortable using the device although, it is much easier than using a Windows 10 computer.
