This thing is great as long as you keep in mind what it was meant for- basic entertainment. It is compact with a wide screen and the keyboard size makes it extrememly easy to type. You will need a screen protector because it does keep fingerprints and that looks kind of gross, but that being said- its a great gadget. I have the 3G version which makes surfing the web and downloading easy as 1,2,3. The only real con I can see so far is viewing content on Youtube and news websites- not the greatest resolution, but not a deal breaker. Gadget geeks may have tons of dislikes etc, but if you just need something to keep you entertained on a bus ride, airplane, or at your desk and you are not trying to change the world with it- i say go for it! I'll just be glad when they get more accessories for the dang thing.

Lighter weight than a laptop ......I am retired and bought this instead of a bulky laptop for flexibility away from the desktop and to be easily connected while traveling out of state. The reader is great ! So easy to purchase books at great prices! Game selections are great as well. E-mail and wi-fi was easy to set up. I love my IPad!!!

I originally bought this device for traveling but I find I use the iPad much more than my laptop for everyday tasks like email, web-browsing and games. Given that I travel frequently, this device is a God-send. You don't even have to take it out of your luggage at airport security. I do a lot of word processing for my job and am just now beginning to get all the apps needed, and coordinated, to make the iPad useful for writing and storing documents. That task will not be as efficient as on my laptop, but to be able to write while traveling (without taking my laptop), it will suffice. The biggest downfall is the inability to use flash applications online. There are several business tasks I like to keep up with online while traveling that use flash, and at this point I can't access them. Apple has supposedly reversed their position on flash applications so I am hoping that developers jump on this quickly to make more web-based applications usable on the iPad.

It works great. You can use it as an e-reader, gaming console, mobile internet device, digital picture frame, portfolio, wireless mouse and keyboard for my computer, cookbook, word processor, smart home controller (so yes it can make my coffee), and more. The possibilities seem endless with all of the creative uses for it. 10 hour battery is conservative and can last days.
I don't need flash because html5 is taking over. I don't need a camera because I have an SLR and I have a laptop for chatting. I don't need a USB port because I can access everything I need wirelessly.
*nothing is perfect, but this does what it does perfectly

Move over iPhone

I thought the iPhone was the best gadget ever, no, Its the iPad. What stopped me initially was the facts that iPad had few apps and what they had cyst, BUT when I learned that all iPhone apps wouldnwork on the iPad and.have the same functionality, I was sold.
I haven't activated the 3G portion as I haven't had to but the flexibility of using it on demand was another option that old me.
Just like the iPhone, you have to close the multitasking widows that can be left open and run done the battery. The battey usage seems to go more quickly than I would like but it's still a good life for the use yup want out of a device.
Make sure you buy the protective front screen and cover for protection.

It's hard to write anything about the iPad that hasn't already been said by other reviewers in the marketplace. After my positive experience several years ago with iPhone 1, I decided to add an iPad to my growing collection of techno gadgets. So far, it has met all of my expectations and the expanding collection of apps makes its uses almost endless (at least until I meet the capacity of the storage drive). As a photographer and filmmaker, I'm still discovering possibilities that I hadn't even envisioned when I decided to buy. Still, like with anything in life, there's always room for improvement. Some of the basic functions required by purchasing apps should already be onboard the device when you purchase it. Also, users will quickly find that their onboard memory is being eaten up very quickly, so opt for the largest capacity you can afford. It's really annoying that Apple doesn't allow for the option of adding a memory upgrade. However, you can manually sync your iPad and take off high MB-size items like interactive books that you don't need permanently stored onboard. Whatever its minor flaws (such as no camera in the first generation), it's still a revolutionary and versatile device whose benefits continue to unfold on almost a daily basis. Whatever special functationality you think might be missing, probably someone in the developer community is thinking of a solution to meet your needs. If there's no app yet, there probably will be. Visit a retailer, take a test drive and see if this product is right for you. Chances are, you'll be saying the same thing like many years ago when I dismissed the idea of owning a PC or Mac. Do you remember saying: "What would I ever do with that?" Welcome to the future. I haven't looked back.

Great accessory to a mobile lifestyle...

I was reluctant to buy an iPad because of it's storage capacity (same as iPod touch) and lack of built-in camera (minor feature), but I figured I'd purchase the base 3G model until the next generation came out. First of all, this is not a laptop replacement. In fact, I use it to complement my MacBook Pro.
This device is perfect for home, school, or office. I frequently took this device to class where it's a lot more convenient than a notebook for taking notes. In addition, with certain e-reader apps available in the App Store, I downloaded many of my textbooks to it so that I didn't have to tote around several heavy books with me. I also took the iPad with me during work where I used it to quickly take notes during meetings or as an aid in presentations where I could control a slideshow presentation on my computer, wirelessly with my iPad (I could also have access to presenter notes on the device, while my audience only saw the slides on the projector).
On top of the countless uses for the iPad, it is very intuitive and easy to use. My mother (who isn't the most technologically savvy) fell in love with it, and used it every time she had the chance. Eventually, before I moved out I gave it to her, and she's been using it ever since to keep track of me and her friends and family on Facebook, while also managing her hobby, buying and selling things on ebay.
My only gripe is that they took away the unlimited data option just before I gave it as a gift. Hopefully, after Apple and AT&T's exclusivity contract has run out, other service providers will offer the device and bring back unlimited data.
It's a great portable device with a long battery life and number of uses that is only limited by your imagination. I would recommend this to anyone, young or old, in any profession. I can't wait to get another one when the 2nd generation is released, hopefully with more improved features. But as of right now, this device is great as it is.

Bought a 16GB wifi+3G in the summer. Originally thought it would get used as a companion to our computer, but our iPad quickly became our main computer.
We mostly use our computers for surfing the web, creating documents, viewing and printing photos, emailing, playing games, facebook, watching movies, and reading, and digital magazines. (iBooks is great!)
Great battery life (we get all day use out of ours, and charge it while we sleep) is a big plus.

I got this one to start with but soon found out most places I can get wifi. Needing a larger capacity, traded back for a non-3g w/64 gig and wifi. Works like a charm. Only now I hear we'll soon see the iPad2 with dual cams and more. Should I have waited? Would have been nice to know and I would have. May still exchange for iPad2.

I bought the ipad on a whim one afternoon after deciding I needed a device that would allow me to do quick proofs of my landscape photography in the field. The review screen on the back of the camera is just too small to accurately judge focus and color rendition. I purchased the camera kit as well and have been nothing but impressed with it. Now, I can review the photos and see more or less the quality of the photos. The apps available are great and have helped me immensely with this as well. Connectivity has been excellent. My 3G connection has not let me down, even in some areas with really bad coverage. The wifi also works very well indoors and at some of the hotspots I frequent. I have had a sip of the Apple Koolaid and it is pretty tasty. I've always been a PC person and will be buying my first Mac later this week due to my experience with the iPad.

Heavy, no Flash, no cameras, expensive

The iPad is very heavy and cannot be held in one hand for very long and you pretty much have to get some sort of cover/case because it is so slick it will slide off things. It has no cameras at all, most competitors have 1 if not 2. It does not handle websites that use Flash, which is about 30% of the web. You can't add additional storage, most all the competitors can add SD cards. It is higher priced than any of the competitors and again you have to pay more to get more storage - much more than a comparable SD card of the same storage capacity.

Hi,
I was not overly excited by getting an iPad when I first saw it, however I'm now a convert and cannot live without it. The 3G is really critical because after having an iTouch without it you realize just how limiting the device is when you cannot get a WIFI signal.

The iPad does a lot of stuff, it can be just about anything you need for a business tool, depending on what Apps you install on it. Be sure to get the 3G iPad, it cots more but it does several functions that the non-3G unit cannot do. the 3G model has a GPS, and a Magnetometer (compass) and the Cell service doesnt require a full time subscription, month to month is great. I bought the Max 2GB plan for $25 and havent used 1/10 of the bandwidth. I even have Jailbroken the iPad to use it as a Wireless hotspot for my Macbook, data speeds are very good (over 1 MB/s) and although ATT and Apple do not support the Jailbreak or Tethering, its well worth the effort to do it. The App store at Apple is full of great productivity and games, plus many gee-whiz programs thought up by crafty folks, A Jailbroken iPad has an additional batch of crafty apps, (like the 3G to Wifi tethering MyWi 4.0). Spend the extra $130 and get the 3G model, you will be glad you did !

When news first came around about a giant iPod Touch I wasn't terribly interested in the idea. Once it was released a couple of friends invested their time and money into it and showed me what it was like. I was hooked! I scrounged up some money and made my purchase after I had done even further research into the iPad and decided it was time for purchase.
I made my selection based on having multiple platforms for data storage and went with the 16GB 3G+Wifi model. I picked up this particular model for the "just in case" clause for when I'm out of the house or any hot spots. I also picked up the Otterbox Defender case for maximum protection. I get 2GB of data from AT&T and have yet to reach my limit in the first month of owning it. I think it's a great purchase and I've become addicted to touch games and other apps on the platform.
The only thing is that it's too big to take into the gym with me. That's what I have a ZuneHD for, I guess. But that's a different story.

This is a wonderful product! I use this in all environments, home, school, and work. There truly are apps to fit all needs!
As a doc student: reading journal articles is so much easier since I don't have to carry around paper copies; I can also take notes in the margins!
As a BCBA: I use this to work with children with autism, and am amazed daily how easily they navigate the device.
As a mom to a two year old: This device offers endless opportunities for introducing new and exciting games (both educational and fun). My daughter uses this device with ease and traveling is much easier. I don't have to pack a bag filled with toys she'll likely lose pieces to, I just rotate the apps available to her (just as I would with toys) to maintain her attention.
Wonderful, natively adaptive, and versatile device!

where to start first of all the say you can go surf the web with this thing but i guess it turns out not all websites. if you want to go to any video site like crunchyroll it will not work. Hulu blocks the Ipad and lots of other websites i like don't work. Then it turns all the apps cost more for the ipad version and if you get the ipod version they tend not look horrible on the bigger screen. Worse of all if you already have an Ipod/Iphone and you want an app for both your ipad and ipod/iphone then you have to either use the small version on both or buy the app twice. The ipad also offers very little in the way of connections. They at the very least could have added a usb port or a slot for an SD card.
Also all the magazines and books they sell for this things are a waist. Magazines and newspapers try to sell you what you can get for free online. Well not if you have an IPad. some of the stuff they sell you is free if you use a normal computer or laptop, but if you are using an IPad the website won't work for you so they want you to buy the content through ITunes. Also i notice when i try to take this thing outside i can never see the screen because of the sun.
My Ipad sits in a drawer collecting dust now. I will probably sell it on Craigslist.
