You'd be a fool not to get it! Apple products are too expensive not to get some sort of protection plan for them.

In April, I purchased a new Apple device at curbside. During the process, I was advised to also buy the AppleCare+ plan for $169 which provided 3 years of coverage on the expensive device. I was not informed before I paid the $169 that I would be subject to as much as $299 per instance of exercising coverage if needed over the term. Okay, so what's wrong with the deal, you may ask? (1). I wasn't told that I would be subject to paying additional money out of pocket if I ever had to use the coverage and (2). If you look how the deal works, if you were to use the coverage just once, the total replacement cost out of your pocket is the initial $169 + $299, for a total of $468. Now, that doesn't sound like a bad deal, but the way I look at it is this way, the replacement cost of the device (depreciating asset) declines over time! If I were to re-sell the same device I purchased in April, I would be fortunate to recover half of what I paid for it. Half of what I paid for it today equates to a fair market value of about the same total cost of the 3-year coverage that I am subject to with the initial payment of $169, assuming that I use the coverage in the next 12 to 36 months. The problem I have with this little agreement, both Retailer and OEM recognize that the actual cost of replacement (and repair) is in fact covered by the terms of the AppleCare+ coverage pricing agreement. This is not really an insurance product that works in the best interest of the consumer, in my opinion. Okay, why did I say that? If I ever have a problem with the machine, I will have to go through quite a lengthy and frustrating process of having the device serviced. During that time, I would be without an interim device. I would also be subject to lack of use and access of data and information maintained with the device. When you add up the cost of time lost during the repair period, the lack of device ability, the cost of recovering and transferring data/information, and the sheer frustration of the processes involved in executing coverage... It's probably a better backup plan to simply set-aside a rainy-day fund to buy another used asset in the future in case something happens to the existing device. The service plan, which includes the hidden service fees, is not exactly the nicest product arrangement between service provider and consumer. I don't like the way that the coverage was sold to me; I had to read the fine print to see that I was subject to more out-of-pocket spending if I ever needed to use the coverage in the future. Also, couple this perspective with the limited 15-day return policy and consider that I didn't unbox the device until 2-months after the initial purchase... I had already exceeded the return policy limitations by the time I was ready for first-time-use of the product. I feel slightly self-violated on this one. Why? Had I done my homework before investing in my new Apple Device, I could have done far better by going with a refurbished asset and upgrading - or just shopping around instead of trusting Best Buy's "no best buy guarantee". Brand new, I could have bought the same 8 GB machine for $400.00 less than I spent at Best Buy curbside that afternoon. I also could have done better than the relatively dependable, but not so perfectly reliable Core i5 processor. YES - It sticks from time-to-time. I am frozen in my unfortunately self-undermined approach in choosing Apple, who won me over as a customer a few years ago after more than 10 years of avid Windows-only technology consumption. The disappointment is quite memorable at 8 GB for the $. :-(
