A hostile nation is holding 52 members of the embassy staff hostage. While the majority of the State Department is focused on those hostages, six members of the embassy staff have sought refuge with the Canadian ambassador. How would you get them out? Could you get them out? Thanks to the U.S. allowing their deposed leader to seek refuge in America, the Iranian people storm the American embassy on November 4, 1979. The staff is rushing to shred or burn all their confidential files. The majority of the staff are held hostage while a small percentage escape unnoticed. The State Department begins planning a rescue and asks the CIA to consult. It’s abundantly clear to the Agency’s “exfiltration” specialist, Tony Mendez (played by Ben Affleck), that the State Department is in over their heads. With such plans as having the embassy workers ride to the border disguised as teachers on bicycles in winter. It was back in his hotel watching Battle for the Planet of the Apes and talking to the son Ian (played by Aidan Sussman) that Tony (Affleck) has an idea. Disguise the hostages as a film crew and sneak them out right under the enemy’s nose. After bringing the idea to his boss, Jack O’Donnell (played by Bryan Cranston) the plan gets the go-ahead. Later, they approach the make-up specialist who worked on The Planet of the Apes who has also done work for the Agency in the past, John Chambers (played by John Goodman). Chambers in turn introduces Mendez to a well-known producer named Lester Siegel (played by Alan Arkin). Once they’ve chosen a script, Argo, a science-fiction fantasy in the style of Star Wars, they go the extra mile in establishing it as a legitimate enterprise. Where it was simply a poster in the beginning, Siegel organizes a table-reading with known actors, press, and studio staff. While all this is going on, the Iranian government has sweatshop labor assembling the shredded photos so that they can identify anyone who they failed to capture. Also, our six escapees become increasingly fearful that they will be discovered. I’m kind of a sucker for movies based on factual events, no matter how much the narrative diverges from history. A Beautiful Mind, The Insider, some that don’t have Russell Crowe as the lead actor. That said, it doesn’t guarantee I will like it. Case in point, I found J. Edgar unbelievably dissatisfying. Argo, on the other hand, is brilliant, in my opinion. The story is gripping, the comic relief is hilarious, and the suspense has me on the edge of my seat. As a lead actor, Affleck has had some notable flops. Gigli and Surviving Christmas among them. As the director of Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and now Argo, however, he is now three for three. You should definitely see this movie.

One of my favorite movies of 2012!

ARGO was one of my favorite movies of 2012. I viewed it without reading too much about the plot, so it was fun to be surprised. I was in 8th grade when this historical event happened, so I certainly remember what 1979 was like. I believe that Ben Affleck and company did a SUPERB job portraying the era of the late 1970s...and the political environs that surrounded Jimmy Carter...and then Ronald Reagan. Ben Affleck SHOULD have been nominated for Best Director for an Academy Award....as demonstrated by his many WINS in that category in OTHER awards shows this season. The Academy MESSED UP that one. Still, I'm hoping ARGO does well at the Academy Awards in other categories. The cast as an ensemble is a VERY believable bunch....portraying the perfect mix of angst, terror, heroism, and even nervous humor. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Enjoy ARGO! It's a wonderful depiction of a true story...and it's a perfect political suspense thriller!

    Incredible True Story

I'm not a big history person, but i really enjoyed the true story of survival and determination of one of our unknown heroes. It makes you wonder how many others are out there that we do not know about too. They are just doing there job to protect the USA. It is a very compelling story of teamwork between Canada and the US and the behind the scene look at what happens in a crisis.

I am a history buff and just missed out on watching Argo in the theaters. So after all the Oscars buzz and eventually wining, I splurged for the Blu-ray 2 set. Excellent choice. The story line was brilliant and the direction of Affleck brought out the best in everyone with great attention to detail. The disc extras helped to flesh out a few questions my wife and I had

A great best pic winner that falls a bit short

Argo is Ben Affleck's third effort behind the camera. (Hopefully) we're all aware of the Iran hostage crisis that occurred from 1979-81. This film focuses on six Americans who made it away from the embassy, and the Canadians and Americans who got them out of Iran. The film is well-made. Those who care about authenticity will be upset, however. The third act is not as strong as the rest of the film, but Affleck keeps the film from fully stumbling to its conclusion. The blu-ray offers excellent picture and audio, and above-average supplements.

Ben Affleck's Argo, is yet another example of how great a filmmaker he is, and it is definitely his best! This is hands down the most intense film of 2012, and it includes a stellar, and gritty look on Blu Ray. The additional features also allow the watcher to enjoy much more than the stand alone film, which is just as awesome!

I completely enjoyed this movie and am happy with my purchase. It had a good amount humor and even though historically I knew the ending it still felt suspenseful. I would also say that I was pleasantly surprised that it was about a different part the hostage crisis than I thought. I will say no more about the story so as not to spoil the movie.

I wasn't always an Affleck fan, but believe it or not, Daredevil turned me. Since then, I've watched most of his stuff and it's usually pretty solid, unless it comes to the movies he directs. Those are ALWAYS good. Argo is probably his best film yet and anyone reading this just needs to click the purchase button now. You won't regret it.

I thought Ben Affleck and crew did an excellent job portraying the time and capturing the events of this national crisis. However, the tension is slightly diminished knowing the outcome. If you want to watch it a second time, it will be because of the way it deftly captures an era and the scenes with John Goodman and Alan Arkin,

This movie was excellant! Another great movie from Director Ben Affleck. This guy knows how to direct movies. The plot was great (but being based on a true story, it has to be, in order to get a movie treatment). The acting was excellant and the actors were believable. It had some great suspenseful moments.

I never owned the Blu-Ray originally, I bought the film because of my 4K set up and my enthusiasm of the film. The picture is as intended to have a grainy film look of the time period and the sound is great too. This would not be the definitive edition to own because there is a Classified Blu Ray with an extended cut of the film and a bunch of special features. But this is a nice purchase.

This is a great movie. Its not the most replayable title, but the first viewing will leave viewers enthralled with this true story. Ben Affleck proves he is a director to reckon with for a long time. Great for fans of true stories, dramas, and get suspense.

    Best movie of 2012

The best movie of 2012 by far, this movie had me on the edge of my seat (even though I knew what was going to happen). Great transfer, with some video noise, but was intended by Ben Affleck to give the film a "dated" quality. This movie cannot be missed!
