Terrible product with weak wifi. not worth $$$.

The wifi on this product does not perform to spec and often drops out for minutes altogether. I can get 100Mbs on ethernet through the modem, but only 20-30Mbs at best and more typically only 1-2Mbs. There are MANY reviews saying the same thing, implying this is a poorly designed product. Terrible product. Customer service is pleasant, but not terribly helpful ("try switching channels for the next few days to see if that helps" when I am 2 ft from the modem and not seeing any throughput?). The replacement policy is a scam to generate further income for them, where it either deprives you of the product for ~2 weeks or asks you to pay a $10 processing fee ("to bump you to the front of the line" as a service rep manager put it) to ship a new one out to you first.

    Excellent modem but very buggy

I bought the modem while ago and at the beginning it was working great. After some time, the wireless started dropping connections. I've looked up a way to update firmware but Motorola says that they can't, only ISPs can do firmware updates. Looked up on the internet and lot's of people with the same issue. Don't know why we can buy a very expensive product and don't have complete control over it. It is very painful trying to get support from cable company and/or Motorola. Great modem when it works.

Not so great. Just works fine for now. Hoping TWC won't change any config and make this modem useless, same like Netgear which I bought last year.

It is simply two in one :) and the wifi coverage is more than enough for an apt.

    Bad Wireless Connection

    Posted .

I thought the two-in one combo would be great; I'd used a 2Wire gateway before but was switching to cable from DSL and needed a new modem. This was pricey (paid about $130 for it). It was easy to install but I can't even bring my computer "around the corner' in the same room without dropping the connection. Heck, sitting 15 feet in front of the modem I can still drop connections (when my 2Wire gateway before had NO issues). Thankfully I shelled out the extra bucks to get the one that permits four hardwired connections. Still, they get used up pretty quickly: one to the PS3, one to the DirecTV box--leaves only 2. I have to use a 50 ft ethernet cable so my laptop can be "mobile" inside my apartment. When it's hardwired, the speed is fast, which (I think) has nothing to do with the modem and is all about Charter. For the price, the wireless connection should be rock solid and it simply is not. I would NOT buy this again; would NOT recommend it to anyone.

We could not stay connected to the wifi from the bedroom, which is not very far in a 500 sq. ft. apartment.

    Get something else

This modem/router is a P.O.S. I have used it for about six months and it continually drops my computer off the network when used wirelessly. I called Motorolla today to get some customer service help, and they said the warranty had expired so it would cost me $30.00 to get any help. I asked how the 1 year warranty could be up when I have only had it for 6 months. They said the modem must have sat on the shelf too long at the store and they figure the warranty as 18 months from the date of manufacture. It was the normal Amercian Corprate customer service response when something goes wrong with a product, "Sucks to be you, we wont do anything to help you." I wont be buying from Motorola again, and I would highly recommend that you purchase a different brand modem/router.

    Poor Performance

The installation was easy but the performance was not up to par. The modem fell off the network 5 times in a span of 5 hours. Too much for the first day it was installed. We removed it and will be returning asap. We installed our original old modem/router set and they worked fine which tells us it was definitely the modem.

    Horrindous

Ok so I bought this to replace my G network and it was an AWEFUL experience! I bought this because the best buy guy recomended it over what I had origanally come to buy (which wasn't even at the store) and I was pretty excited. I go home and look at the instructions which were just aweful (6 boxes that looked like a 1st grader drew). So I hooked it up and after an hour of tinkering I finnaly called Comcast (which was the ISP table this was on) and went through about 30 minutes of them setting it up. So that was horrible. So after all of that the internet is more unreliable and unstable than my 6 year old G network setup. So I used it mostly for my Xbox and it cut out every 30 minutes or so. My Ipad wouldn't even go to google and it was just annoying! So today I finnaly snaped when randomly it just stoped. So im back to my G network (which is faster than this hunk of junk.) SO my advice is DON'T BUY THIS JUNK!

Read this before you buy! Bad Device Bad Service

comcast offered me 50 megabytes per second then I decided to get the modem to increase the power and speed for my computer and all the devices in my house after installing the device I noticed that the speeds were slower for the lower megahertz then when I increase the megahertz not all the devices would work so my 50 megabytes of speed that I am paying for is reduced to only 5 megabytes and if I increase the megahertz my speed go up to 50 megabytes which is a waste in my case most of the time the devices in my house cannot find the IP address and therefore cannot connect. I called tech support to troubleshoot the problem and they said that I should get a different modem / router due to the speed that I want. the company Ares stated that most likely is due to the interference from all the other riders in the apartment complex that I live in but I feel that the device is defective therefore I plan to rent one from comcast to see if it is my device or if it's just the fact that I'm living in an area that has hi number of users.

I bought the SBG 6580 because apparently it is the only combo that works with Comcast. I have had four, yes four, of these devices from Motorola. All have the same problem- hopeless coverage. It cannot give a full strength signal even if the laptop is right beside it. If I move a 20 feet away the signal drops away- sometimes loses it entirely. Set up is bonkers as the first reviewer noted.

This device is good when you connect your PC with wire, but not that useful if you go wireless when you have big house. Wired D/L speed 81 MBPS .

    Not Great

In spite of the other ratings, I purchased this as a modem/router based on the Motorola name. FIrst - Motorola has sold off this division. Second - all other reviews about this product that talk about it dropping or losing connection are correct. It worked fine for a few days, then woudl drop connection every few minutes. I called the technical support number as well as Time Warner Cable. Both indicated things should be fine. I finally returned the item and purchased another brand. All good with that one so far!! I was very disappointed with this model

WiFi is terrible and modem broke after 2 years

Let me start by saying I'm a tech-savvy guy. I develop Windows Phone and Android apps, so I know a little about what I'm talking about. The range of the WiFi in this modem is awful. It hardly even functions in my one bedroom apartment! I had to buy a separate router to get quality WiFi. And after using this modem for 2 years, it recently started to lose packets... it was losing about 58% of the packets it sent (pingtest.net) and streaming videos were constantly buffering as a result. So I had to buy a new modem, and now 0% of packets are lost. Either the built-in router or the modem itself failed... long story short, buy a separate modem and router so that if one fails, you don't have to buy BOTH again.

    Unreliable

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My friend bought this for me. Both wired and wireless connection were off with unknown reasons once every 1-2 days; I checked with Comcast, I was told there was no disruption whatsoever. Then I went to BestBuy to exchange a new one. The second one does improve: it fails every 4-6 days. Guess multiple functions (cable modem + router + wireless) together may not be a good choice; at least need some time to be mature.
